@godfreyih: You don't have to buy a region-1-dvd-player. For most dvd-players there is an opportunity to reprogram them so that they are region-free. I did that with my own region-2-player with a simple key-combination via remote control. Just check out the videohelp-website (dvd-hacks) for the key-code you need for your player-model.
"Black Scorpion" is a great movie! I love the old fifties-sci-fi-flicks. But my favourite monsterfilm is Harryhausen's "Beast from 20000 Fathoms".
This film I think is one of the GREATEST and most overlooked sci-fi film of all the gian creature features of this era. THEM! and Tarantua! overshadowed in the film with there really iconic scenes, but this film actually had and still has a disturbing side to it with its violence and very well thought out story. This film is one of the few black and white creature features that actually had a little blood in it. Like in the scene where the scorpion attacks an electrician in the desert.
@Darl1n1 Have you seen Them! and Earth vs. The Giant Spider? two other classic movies. There is one that I saw in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, with my friends and their parents(we were like in first or second grade, so this is all out of memory), they had a Bug exhibit. on a little TV at the entrance were scenes from various Giant Bug monster movies. I saw one with a giant Praying Mantis, and one with a giant spider walking down a huge street. Do you know those movies by chance?
O Gauge 47, Jimbo Clinton, & Betty Boop - Yes, the tender is backwards & should say " Nde M " instead of " Lionel LInes". Maybe the tender was backwards so it could couple to the non-Lionel cars? At least we should applaud Willis O'Brien for using models that are in scale with each other; a lot of these movies didn't .
This was the first "X" certificate film I saw when I was fourteen, and I loved it! I know it looks awful compared to todays films, but I would love to get it here in the UK. There is no dvd available, annd not even a video playable in Europe. I wonder why?
There seems to be so many of these "monster" films on sale, but not this one
It's invariably copyright issues affecting international releases - isn't it funny, recalling our days in the UK as a kid, when EVERYTHING even vaguely scary was X rated??!! (Like War of the Worlds and Beast from 20000 Fathoms and Them!) You'll have to do what I did and move to the US! (Or less expensively, you could purchase an All-Region DVD player and order The Black Scorpion on a Region 1 DVD from amazon.com)
@godfreyih Thanks for your reply. I loved all those daft monster flicks when I was a kid, and so mmany are nnow obtainable on dvd except this one.
I know what you mean about an all regions dvd player, but not long ago I bought quite an expensive new one, which isn't all regions. Annoying
I did get a copy of Beast from 20, 00 fathoms" which had a Black Sccorpion trailer, which looks as if that is the nearest I will get to seeing it again. I can't even get a Region 2 VHS copy
Willis O' Brien and Harryhausen were the best stop-motion creators of all time I think. I think O' Brien still beat Harryhausen just a bit (it's hard to compete with the man behind King Kong) but both were wizards who made amazing creatures. Some of the effects actually still look more impressive than some of the CGI we have today. Granted drive-in movies from the 50's were campy in idea, but The Fly, The Blob, the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The Thing, this etc are actually really good.
At 1:01 you can see the train is a postwar Lionel model, with 'Lionel Lines' clearly seen on the tender, which is also backwards. Good 'ol old school SFX...
this movie looks pretty cool but it's even better because willis o brien did the special effects and even better still because i'm watching the mst3k version.
One of my all-time favorite Creature Features ... some of the scenes in this film come from the cutting room floor of the original 1933 King Kong .. they were cut out back in '33 when censors thought they were too brutal ... the Spiders in the pit and crawly things in the cave scenes were created for King Kong.
Incredibly entertaining movie. A great late night flick when you don't have to use your brain at all. The stop motion effects were fantastic and the miniatures were beautifully made.
One of my favorite movies ever! In the Cincinnati area Ch. 19 on Saturdays and Sundays used to run "Creature Feature" and this movie was played fairly often. Good memories.
someone said the contender was backward on the train. didnt look like it to me.and the first person to be picked up and devoured was that a woman?looked like they had on a skirt
Actually all of the animation (Terrific BTW ) was by Pete Peterson who worked with Obie in later years. PP died not long after this film was released.
If you like classic SCI-IF movies then you may like to check out a movie I made called the brain sucking fiend. Its in 3 parts on my page if your interested, but you don't have to.
Ran over budget and some of the scorpian special effects were not finished but included in the film anyway. Still, a great movie for its day and still gives a scare.
It also has a number of uncompleted matte shots, like the one at 1:46, where there's just a black silhouette of a scorpion crossing the screen. The optical composites were never finished because the budget ran out.
This was animated by a Pete Peterson, under the guidance of Willis O'Brien. This is a curious piece, because much of what is seen in the movie gives an idea of what O'Brien did in the famous "missing spider pit" sequence of the original King Kong.
Peterson was a fantastic animator, all the more amazing that he animated Black Scorpion in a sitting position because he was crippled by multiple sclerosis. The 'trap door' creature that chases the boy in the cave is supposedly one of the original 'spider pit' models.
Interesting clip from "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms"...it doesn't appear to be a scene used in the actual feature. Was it an early test? Or maybe some of Harryhausen's 3-D footage he shot afterwards? Anyone know?
i was quite impressed with the stop motion at 1:09

Unfourtenly underated SF Movie in Germany, so it never dubbed got a cinema release. But there is a new DVD release from Warner for the US market!
I love all kind of SF-Movies of this periode including the major productions and the so called B - pictures!
Now a days the SF Movies are forced by very expensive CGI Effects but that circumstance doesnt make them to better movies.
