I agree Steve is the master of this song but u got to give it up for Billy Powell for his kickass piano playin on this and every single one of their tunes. Love em all still.
once u have started there is no turning back. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murderded in 1945. her body was not found until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 vid

Like Hendrix-Steve respected the art of progress AND the reality of the blues being a part of everyones reality-and because of that respect, literally had, (like Jimi) a guitar on him 12 damn hrs. a day...every fu*kin' day-there's only one way you play that way kids-one way-of course, thank you TONS for this tony.
@hatehildog The only Skynyrd albums I count is Pronounced, Second Helping, Nuthing Fancy, Gimme Back My Bullets, One More From The Road, and Street Survivors...
@SteveGaines for the most part i feel the same way. its still pretty cool to hear some the unreleased tunes on muscle shoals and legend. but i definetely think the new skynyrd is just a southern rock band that plays skynyrds music.
@hatehildog Ronnie Van Zant is/was and will always be Lynyrd Skynyrd..When he died along with his new found songwriting soulmate Steve Gaines...Lynyrd Skynyrd died...He wrote the songs, ran the band and kept everyone in line...When RVZ died they all died in one way another..that Thursday night way back on October 20, 1977...
Mr.Gaines was a Great asset,Awsome player/Super vocalist,Its heart breaking that we lost him at such a young age, very promising,I havent heard this track with the girls (steves sister&Honkettes),
Stevie Gains!!! Don't get any better. Taken way to soon! Another casualty in the long list of those that get caught up on that pro music train.. I'm one of the few that was lucky enough to see him live. 1977 Anaheim Stadium.
what a player and singer this guy was!!! rather than denigrate Collins or Rossington, fine players both, folks ought to marvel at Gaines' greatness, and lament that we were robbed of seeing and hearing his development. he was such a deep, fluid player for one so young. it's inarguable that he was a worthy replacement -- and then some -- for Ed King.
Well Ed made the decission to leave the band. it is not like he was fired or kicked out of the band. He would have been back after the street survivor's tour. But for sure Steve was a very talent player. make no mistake about it
Ever since I was sixteen and could hear the difference between the Gibsons and your Strats I was hooked on your genius! And your Black Beauty also brought tears to my eyes. If I practiced 24 hours a day I could not play one tenth as good as you. Long live and God bless you and L.S.
Steve worked with LS because he was DIFFERENT..While Gary and Allen were influenced by the British Cats...Steve was influenced by Motown and cats like Freddie King and Albert King....One of the greatest white blues singers ever, he had so much to give, Great songwriter, guitarist and singer...as Ronnie Van Zant..."We will all be standing in Steve's shadow some day"..What a shame he died so young"..
I agree with everyone here about the guitar tones and who's doing which solo's. But one thing to remember is that even if Allens not playing the solo's, his rhythm work was a key tone to the skynyrd sound.
What was so eerie about Steve and Ed King were..They were the THIRD guitar player...Both are remembered for their "STRAT PARTS"...but when Ed went to visit the gravesites of Ronnie, Steve and Cassie he freaked...Steve's birthday is September 14, 1949....THE SAME AS ED"S...What are the chances of TWO great guitar players being born on the SAME DAY AND YEAR and one replacing the other in the same band...Ed said..It felt like he bought by bullet"...
@violetbernice Leslie Hawkins sings the high part, Cassie Gaines sang the middle, and JoJo sang the low parts. I'm thankful today that at least Leslie is still with us on the planet.
aint exactly a real big apyle fan but 3:01 - 3:09 those drum fills are really sweet just b4 the guitar solo @ 3:20 and are you sure that's not ac 3:20-3:50? sounds like allen's style of licks tho the way sgaines' vocal comes right back in after the last guitar note it could be steve either that or ac&sg were really in synch & gaines was anticipating taking the vocal back & rvz' intro's not exactly clear: new song/ old song? say what? too much saki in osaka?
Check out those Licks at 3:20 don't remember hearing that little "WALK DOWN" on "That Smell"?..That was Steve on the solo and Gary at the beginning and end...
Steve Gaines SCARED THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF ALLEN COLLINS AND GARY ROSSINGTON...They had tasted success..and had gotten lazy...Steve got a taste of the lime light and was hungry...Steve that's him taking the solo at the 3:20 mark..Hear that "STRAT"....Steve could play slide like a monster, CHICKEN PICK ( check out Honky Tonk Night Time Man)...and rock with best ( That Smell)...He was a singing/guitar playing/songwriting fool..He had the band pointed in a NEW DIRECTION..Such a shame....
or even barry harwood turned out harwood did alot almost all of the lead stuff on the allen collins band lp
i admire steve gsines so much that guy was on his way i mean o-n h-i-s w-a-y. no telling how high he was going its such a shame but his music stays thankfully
It's kinda funny but its (also) true. Gaines was about to take this amazing band towards a new, more enthusiastic/energetic level by 1977 and it was beginning to show.
Gary and Allen were fantastic in their day, but it often seemed that the band had to have that third guitarist to provide direction for them. Ed King did that for the first three album, Steve did it for Street Survivors.
Steve Gaines was an early Stevie Ray Vaughan - incredible talent and such a tragedy.
Steve Gaines was on the verge of a monstrous career. Unbelievable guitarists, song writer, and his bluesy style vocal would have went a long way. When he joined the band he electrified them.
Interesting note, didn't know that this was the only solo song by SG without Ronnie. SG was great ain't no doubt, but I can recognize GR 's riffs like a signature in just about all of Skynyrd's songs. GR will be to me the Signature "Skynyrd" sound, and not to pass Allen, or Ed, they were also as great. The WHOLE band together were a historical gathering you could say. They set the pace for alot! Thanks for the Video
I read an article in Guitar Legends magazine where GR talked about how much better Gaines was than him at certain things and how often Gaines practiced..but AC we'll never know what he thought because was smoking himself man i mean dynamite dude!
"You Got That Right" was with Ronnie and Steve Gaines but everything else you posted is accurate. I think the Street Survivors version of this song is still the best. These lyrics are fucking brilliant!!

STEVE GAINES..... Too bad this one got away. He and Ed King gave each other a run for best Skynyrd guitarist ever, and that means in rock and roll EVER. But Steve could write, sing and perform like no other. Lit a fire under the bands ass when they needed it. Now we are left with what was, and what might have been.... sad............
ed and steve were great but allen and gary were just as good if not better. Gary is one of the best slide players ever and can bend and hold notes like no other. Allen was great and its a shame all the original members alive today cant put their egos aside and get together but i have to say the skynyrd lineup of today is pretty damn good. Just got my tix to see them with hank jr in atlanta front row!!!!
Recorded live in Osaka, Japan on 1/18/77. Steve Gaines on vocals of course, and he does a nice job. Notice that the Honkettes sing backup, which they would not do on the Street Survivors recording.

w/o question gr's is the signature skynyrd guitar 'sound'
i say this based on the 1st lp's credits gr took all lead parts except for 2 songs
also theres a 'tube somewhere of call me the breeze & gr does a number on the solo ruff tuff & melodic
much as i luv&miss ac he was rhythm to gr's lead mostly
ed did his thing on sweet home but even he says gaines smoked 'em all eg the i know a little intro
in a popularity poll i think gr would place last but based on 'sound' he's 1st
