Can't wait to see Justin tomorrow night in Vancouver - even if I f'd up my order & doubled it - more friends to go with me -3 -3 he's had a wonderful legacy of music to grow up with. Is it any wonder he's as wonderful as he is?
I must have listened to this 50 times in the last couple days... really addictive! I am glad to see that JT has raised his game... starting to catch the eyes of his pappy's fans like me... hope to see him next time he hits Detroit.
This is a rare album.. Each song is a surprise, a glass of water, and for the first time in years I didn’t want the c song I was hearing to end and at the same time I couldn’t wait until the next song begin. At last we have someone with talent, charisma, and energy. With any luck the feast of mediocrity American music is currently serving will be over and we can, once again, celebrate the plethora of talent we have been missing for many, many years.
A wonderful song. Reminds me a lot of Johnny Cash. Perhaps with some hints of Steve Earle and Roy Orbison (The Traveling Wilburys, perhaps the greatest of the Rock super groups).
got this track on a free cd with mag. then got the album. then got all his albums. this guy is a genius and a leg end. im so glad people still make music like this :)
JustinTownes Earle is the next big thing not to be played on country radio they are two busy playing crap..........Cant wait for more stuff from Justin
@OleScrubby Great song, but it'd never make me want to be in Arizona. I'm prejudging, as I've never been there - I'm sure it's beautiful. And, while making sweeping generalizations is exactly the heart of the matter about why Arizona is so unappealing to me, its hard to think positively about Arizona due to the unfortunate philosophies of a self-important few who make the policies that drive Arizona in the opposite direction of real progress. They make the entire state look like a bigot.
I have read a few interviews where Earle talked about the song, and think it is most accurate to say that he is using baptism as a metaphor for suicide as a release for the pains of the world. He has said he has had a few friends commit suicide, and one friend was noticeably happier after he decided to take his life and before he did it. More generally, Earle was exploring gospel music forms on this album, to write about non-Christian themes.
Saw him on Letterman last night, the audience didn't know what they were getting and then-thunderous applause. Clearly a big hit. ALWAYS a pleasure to discover some great new music. Early Johnny Cash meets Jakob Dylan, meets early Mellencamp says hello to Oh Brother Where Art Thou. I'm hooked. I live in NYC so I'd love a local show!!
Just saw you on the David Letterman show. I knew your past before I looked you up online. I'm right there with you man. Keep fighting for freedom from dependance. We can do this.
Don't be surprised that you won't hear this song on main stream radio; it's way to good to be played with all that regular bubble gum crap... This song and entire album is amazing! I couldn't find it anywhere, (and believe I looked), so I ordered on-line. Well worth the effort and money! Best album of the year -- if not in years!!!
great blend of rockabilly, country, gospel blues sounds...love it.

If I'm down to my last breath, this may well be the song I wish to go out to. Thanks. You and your dad are, as the kids say, the bombed.
