This was probably Ferrari's worst ever F1 car, to go from being champions in 1979 with the 312T4 to just collecting 8 points between Villeneuve and Scheckter in 1980 with this abysmal 312T5, no wonder Scheckter quit altogether at the end of the season. Maybe Ferrari should've thought of introducing their 1981 126CK turbo a season earlier.
I have every f1 race in Live format between 1978 and 2007 and this is still one of the greatest drives i've ever seen. The track was breaking up on the infield and Gilles clawed back more that a second every lap, due to pure car control. He would've won this race, if it weren't for this. You only need to watch the rest of the 1980 season to comprehend just how ludicrously woeful the T5 was.
You answered your own question. While other teams' 1980 cars raised the bar technologically, Ferrari's entry basically stayed the same.
The same thing happened after the Lotus 79: other teams copied and improved on the design.
Brabham dominated Formula 1 in 1981, fell back in the pack in 1982 as the new BMW turbo was unreliable, then came back on top in 1983 when the BMW was ready to win.
The technological curve moves fast in F1. A team can drop back quickly if they don't develop their car.
By 1980, all of the teams running Cosworth engines (and the Renault turbo as well) had developed sophisticated ground effect cars that literally sucked the vehicle to the pavement. Because of the configuration of Ferrari's flat-12 engine, the Ferrari chassis could not utilize the underbody channels the rest of the grid could, thus giving them a tremendous disadvantage of grip.
They acctually redesigned the front end of the T4 (1979) and kept the rear the same for T5 (1980). This created an issue of severe tyre wear and a step back in ground effects. Also the build quality of the T5 was reportedly as bad as the performance of the car. With regular component failures like the right suspension here. Gilles incredibly managed two points finish in the car where as his team mate scheckter circulated back of the pack all year.
heavy crash? he got out of the car SO fast ! XD he just crashed and oh okay he gets out of the car and waits to cross the road like he would park his car and go to the shopping mall XD
This is one of the greatest drives ever seen in F1, in my opinion. That 2980 Ferrari was known as the worst f1 car ever made by the firm and before his suspension splayed out, he drove out of his skin on the broken track.
I dont get it where you find all those DVD's I live in finland you know kinda motorsport country, and for most formula 1 but i cant find any DVD's I have been searching for them cause i really would like to have one.
Gilles was 2nd in that dog of a car? The 312T5 was probably the worst F1 Ferrari ever and they ended the constructors' championship in 11'th place in 1980. Gilles could get podiums in a bad car. He was special.
It wasn't having problems, at least nothing serious enough to stop him from driving. Williams modified the steering column at Senna's request by welding two sections together. The welds then broke in the race, likely causing the crash.
"I don't have any fear of a crash. No fear of that. Of course, on a fifth gear corner with a fence
outside, I don't want to crash. I'm not crazy. But if its near the end of practice, and you're
trying for pole position maybe, I guess you can squeeze the fear ..."

Mainly suspension failure but also serious steering problems as Gilles felt no steering movement whatsoever.
So yes, Gilles still doing OK with the T5 in 1980 was quite a feat. He often used in typical French-Canadian language the term 'Shit car'.
Both Gilles and Jody got so irrate they communicated directly to Enzo, pointing the incompetence of the team's directors and concept staff.

Its hard for me to belive that the '79 Ferrari was such a fast & Reliable car and then in '80 it was a load of crap.

But how come the same car won them both championsips the previous year. The car was basically un changed.
Also, how come the samething happened to lotus in 79?

I do know Scheckter racked up an embarrasing DNQ in Canada as reigning world champion, don't think thats ever happened before, or since.

Senna shouldn't have been driving that Renault, it was having problems in practice runs.
But we sure are glad Villeneuve lived, The battle for 2nd at the 1979 French Grand Prix was awesome
