I drove from SF to LA to visit a buddy there, this was back around '98. I took Interstate 5, which is a boring, straight-ahead drive through a desolate landscape that's not-quite desert and not quite fertile land either. I took it because it's pretty much a straight shoot to LA. Anyway, I still remember smoking a spliff I had rolled beforehand and then putting this song on. The song pretty much knocked my head off. Blasting down the landscape, blasting this song, good memories.
I LOVE THIS SONG IT REMIND ME MY SISTER:), I LOVE ORBITAL ALL SONGS, EACH AND EVERY! THANK'S GUYS THAT I COULD SOW YOU IN POLAND CRACOV 2009- BEST MEMORIES OF MY LIFE!
@therealgist know what you are saying about the little tune up at the beginning. The other bit that I love is at 6:10 where it just takes off again...
"The Girl with the Sun in Her Head" was dedicated to the memory of Volume magazine photographer Sally Harding who died in 1995.[4] The track was recorded using electricity from a Greenpeace solar power generator. It opens with the sound of a heartbeat which serves as bass and develops into what many critics hold as one of Orbital's most accomplished pieces.
@therealgist Well-selected wiki quote. ;) I always loved the little bit at the opening before the main theme is introduced; it just sets the whole tone for the track and as a memorial to a friend it's a lovely piece of work.
when i first heard this it reminded me of ray bradbury's short story "all summer in a day" where this colony of people live on venus and the sun comes only once every 7 years! and this one girl is the only one who's seen the sun before so all the kids are jealous of her :(
I get my two 11" B&o speakers on their sides when am suitably smoked n'stoked and place them on their sides about 2" either side of my head lying on the sheepskin in front of the fire listening to this stuff and i swear there is few now who can replicate the feeling except poss' deadmau5
@trotter23 "I could write this kind iof shit in my sleep" Perhaps. But judging by the only video on your Channel, you'll be too busy recording and posting videos of . . . your . . . cats. A video of your cats, set to a tune by The Monkees. It's all too sad and pathetic for further comment, really. A grown man, posting videos of his cats. Oh the humanity.
@andrehendrik .Please forgive me oh great andrehendrik for being such a weak human and exhibiting emotion in the form of love for animals...I bow down to the greater man andrehendrik whose mind is full of great thoughts and symphonic peplexities of gargantuan proportions, whose musical appreciation and composition is legend and whose understanding of humanity is all knowing and great, and whose coolness and street cred is so hip.Hey Hey we ARE the monkees :) :) :)
@trotter23 "I bow down to the greater man andrehendrik whose musical appreciation and composition is legend"
Now hold on there cat-napper: I didn't claim any of those things. YOU, on the other hand, posted that you "could write this kind of shit" in your feline dreaming sleep. So don't try to make it out like I'm the pompous one. As for the rest, all that's left to say is: Miaow Miaow : )
This Song was written for a special someone..and for the ones who do know ..with a special reason. There is nothing more PURE and STRONG than that .I Love to just put the volume way up in my car and just drive into the sunset with this track !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This track is the equivalent of a time machine for me... I'm back sitting in a Bradford end of terrace house, stoned and coming down after a heavy night... Oh, where do the years go?
This band, and this album especially, was my entry point to dance music and I've never looked back. Orbital are legends and STILL dont get enough credit!
the heart beat in the beginning of this track is apparently one of the members from Orbital's daughter (before she was born ^_^) <3 love this song so much! x
I'm not so sure about the daughter thing, NNlover. I seem to remember it being the sound of the Greenpeace solar power generator which was used to power the equipment for the track.
Almost their best song. Somewhere out there parts 1 and 2 are imo, possibly the best dance tracks ever.

Poor crop of carrots there, if you ask me.
I don't think she watered them enough. They look like choirboy's willies.

She's clearly already been dissociated from a natural order of time. What's the time?
5 carrots to potato o'clock.
Shocking. IT SHOULD BE BANNED.
