Al Davis didn't ruin his career, al drafted him. Jon gruden wanted a more power running game that would control the pace if the game. Definitely my favorite raider.
i just met him because he graduated from lompoc high school and he came to our high school right before our game last friday for the 20 year anniversary of the 1989 lompoc braves going to cif championships and winning!!! so ya it was great
I think Al Davis destroyed Napoleon Kaufman's NFL career. Kaufman avg 5 yards per carry throughout his career & the Raiders still refused to give him the ball...if he was drafted by another team I guarantee he would be in the Hall of Fame.
The raiders had thunder and lightning. Napolean Kaufman and Tyrone Wheatley. The speedback and the powerback. Averaged over 200 yards rushing a game that year. Best combination in the game.
He was the BEST Raiders running back I have seen since he out the blue retired.. maybe charlie garner was the closest.. I remember early in his carrer they wouldnt give him the ball enough. maybe like 10 carries.. then he broke out like he said he would if given the chance to take on a 20-25 carries a game. he had home run speed. now the raiders have RUN DMC but they use a 3 back rotation. no running back will break out getting only 10 carries a game. they need to cut fargas and use him and BUSH
You said "Out of the blue retired." What most people don't know, is that he retired for a great cause, to become a preacher. And I am great full for him, he is a great preacher too, i would know He's my pastor.
@tx925 ..He did "Out the blue" retire.. first he was still in contract when he retired. Yea of course he retired to become a preacher. Every single Raider fan knew that. thats the reason why he said he retired for. but he did leave the raiders hanging. he could have at least waited until his current contract was up... anyways moving on. now that Fargas is gone we should see the 1-2 punch of Bush and McFadden. with Gradkowski starting i think Raiders have a legitimate chance to make a wild card.
Brilliant runner but unfortunately not as durable as he needed to be. But still probably the closest thing to Barry Sanders as far as elusiveness and the ability to score from anywhere on the field.
Ummm, an incorrect statement. He was extremely durable - he missed like 5 games in his career all of them from BS or flukes (poked eye vs. Chargers, leg-whipped in the knee vs. Pittsburgh, tweaked knee on a diving facemask at full speed out of bounds vs. the Seahawks) - he was back in action after a game each time. Durable, strong, and as he showed vs. Denver - can carry the load. Miss him.
OH MY GOD!!! he's the dad of this kid who was in my 5th and 4th grade class. NOT KIDDING BEILIVE ME! he showed me a picture of him from the steelers. his son's name in napoleon kaufman too!
he was fast no doubt n if there was a hole in front of him he was gone. but his biggest downfall was if there was no hole he couldnt stick his head in there and get a tough yard.
I have a video of Napoleon playing high school football. He was so awesome to watch! People came from all around just to see him play! We knew he was going to make it. I also have a clip of video when he was on a local tv station and he was a junior in high school then, and the guy made a comment about how Nip wanted to be a Raider! He was just destined to become a Raider!!!
I agree! He's my favorite Raider running back ever. He maxed out on bench something like 425 lbs and he ran a 4.2 40 i believe. I miss Kaufman, Gannon and Tim Brown. :( Just remember "The Fuck Rule" in 2001. That was our year.
OMFG!!..This dude was awesome when he played! You gotta respect his passion and love the church which lead him away from football..I wish he would have played longer though. He was soooooooo Good!!.. That burst after his cutback was RIDICULOUS!!
I'm from Austin, TX, but I lived in Washington for a four years when he played at the UW. I have several articles and photos of this stud, but I soooo surprised this is all that comes up with him. He could of been like my all time favorite - Barry Sanders. Dam Nap, we all miss you. He's a priest now in LA I believe, for all yall California people.
remember that run NAP had against DENVER that year that DENVER won the superbowl........i think the Raiders were one of 3 or 4 teams that beat them that yeear....anybody got that fucken clip.....jeff george was the qb that year lol
Not that I could tackle any NFL back....but this dude would have been one of the hardest to tackle in the open field. So quick but solid muscle too.
