I think you misunderstood him, regarding the UFO, he was saying how stupid it was to shoot an advanced craft with a machine gun. Regarding the sound, we are talking about inside the craft. the sound waves should be bouncing around from the engine. In other words, if we could hear Neil talk, we should also hear the engine blasting off... and therefore not hear Neil so well.
Thing about the landing though, with the low gravity of the moon you wouldn't need 10,000 pounds of thrust to maneuver, you need very little thrust it would seem to me.
