Unfortunately Mike Love axed Brian's Ol' Man River project in the late 60's. What a shame... Every time Brian got excited and put his heart into something, Mike Love was there to shoot him down.
We'll never know how good Brian Wilson could have been
@curve311 i think we have his greatness in pet sounds and the smile work. it's more sad that yeah, how much great music was lost past what smile was gonna be because brian lost his drive after what happened.
We need to find out who these people are who restore songs like these and others. They did it with Wall-E and Hello, Dolly! Now the Beach Boys got a treatment for Fantastic Mr. Fox. Great stuff.
"Old Man River" brings back early childhood memories of my maternal Grandmother singing this song as we we traveled by the Mississippi en route to my Grandparents' home in Durango, Mexico. I just love this rendition by my favorite group.
In the past, at different points in time .. I've heard various fragmented bits 'n' pieces of this singular-work by Brian .. and that was beautiful to hear, just in itself. But this is the first time I've heard a remix which brings a genuine sense of coherence & completeness to this project. This mix sounds fantastic !! Just when the audience thinks that they've finally figured Brian Wilson out, once & for all .. he goes & pulls a brand new surprise on 'em .. like this wonderful piece.
This version of "Ol' Man River" is a combination of all of the commercially available versions of it by the Beach Boys. All buried treasures until recently. If only they'd come out with this in the 1960s!
From Jawaharlal Nehru in his 1946 book "Discovery of India":
"The Ganges, above all is the river of India, which has held India's heart captive and drawn uncounted millions to her banks since the dawn of history. The story of the Ganges, from her source to the sea, from old times to new, is the story of India's civilization and culture, of the rise and fall of empires, of great and proud cities, of adventures of man…"
It's a river with a lot of history. Hence, "Old Man River"! :)
One good thing about Wes Anderson is that he has reintroduced and kept alive many of the great oldies and virtually forgotten classics of the 1960s for the younger generations. :)
@Franklyjoy22 i think this is a combo of the a capella version that first showed up on the "hawthorne, ca" compilation (recently fantastic mr. fox soundtrack) and the one released on the friends/20/20 double cd. anyway. awesome!
mangoshakess is absolutely right! All we did was blend together different versions, using some pitch correction and other editing effects to make it work together. :)
This is awful. Period.

This is stunning. I wish Capitol would release stuff like this remix instead of more greatest hits albums.

Thanks for your well-thought-out assessment! If only Brian had put this out back in the good ol' days...if only, right? :)

It's not available for download. I recommend Youtube Droid for your MP3 downloading needs. It works great!

HI! We assembled it from three different commercially available versions of the song. It's a homemade mix that we wanted to share with everyone! :)
