Growing up in the '80s, I admired Stringfellow Hawke. He was the ultimate cool guy -- tough, determined, slightly rough-around-the-edges; a real loner -- and yet, exceptionally loyal to the few friends that he had. Lived in a log cabin, had fine art, and flew one heck of a helicopter ... I had the biggest crush on Jean Bruce Scott's character, Caitlin O'Shannessy, as a kid ... she looked great way back when, and has passed the test of time -- she still looks great whenever I watch Airwolf now :D
A lot of discussion here about the poster's question. Its simple, really. He's a solider and not only did he live through a war, but he's constantly surrounded by death. The stress is bound to create attachment issues for him.
You can say that again!! I never understood how Hawke could keep his emotions (and other things) under control with a woman who looked like *THAT* around all the time!! That would drive me bonkers.
@knightryderrwn You have to go back to the pilot movie when Michael was talking to Gabriel, when he talked that he liked her because of his actions. Talking about that he felt that anyone he cared for would die, and that is why he was cold to her at first. Hawke opened up to Gabriel, and we remember what happened to her after he did.
True, very true. I don't know....I think Cait would have been more able to take care of herself than Gabrielle was.....(just my opinion)....although, against a psycho like Moffet, who knows? I think Gabrielle would have been killed whether she had been Hawke's lover or not, simply because Moffet would stop at nothing to protect what he wanted. But, good points. XD
When TBS took over season 4; there was a helicopter explosion that killed Dom and injured String. My take is that Caitlin is taking care of Hawke at the cabin.
That pic @ 2:44 is from "Crossover" from the 3rd season -- Caitlin just saw Hawke and Inge (a Czech defector) hug and kiss each other goodbye, before Inge left with Archangel. I always saw her expression as saying, "Get your hands off him, you B***H**!! He's mine!!" (Or something to that effect.
Cate (Jean Bruce Scott) was kind of cute for her role and despite all the girls Hawk had, she was kind of the girl right under his nose that he should have been giving his affections to, but didn't seem to realise it. Even though she was kind of skinny how could he not be totally capitvated by her face and her eyes?
Look at Cait's expression at 2:44 (Episode "Crossover" from the 3rd season) - she's watching Hawke come out of the hangar arm-in-arm with a VERY attractive Russian female, and it's like she's thinking, "Hey, b***h! Hawke's MINE!! Get your hands off him!!" Or, something to that effect!
(continuing my last post), so I knew that Hawke & Caitlin were doomed to never be more than good friends, much to my (and, obviously, many other peoples') chagrin!
I wanted to see String & Caitlin get together (romantically) in the WORST way - but, as Archangel explained to Gabrielle -
"When he was 12, he and his parents were in a boating accident on the lake. They DROWNED. Just before he shipped out to Vietnam, he and his girlfriend were in a car crash. She DIED. In 'Nam, he and his brother went down on the SAME mission. He got picked up, St. John DIDN'T." And, of course, Hawke & Gabrielle got involved, then Moffett murdered her.
Kind of a cool little video, even at the age of 39 I'm a huge fan of Airwolf. But even back in the 80's, when I watched the show, when they brought in the character of Cait, I remember thinking, cool a love interest for Hawke, but as they progressed, I rather changed my mind and thought, no love interest, maybe little sister figure. They had their brief bouts of love stuff, but they appeared to be more brother & sister than anything else. But Cait sure could fly Airwolf, good pilot, good gal.
The episode is Horn Of Plenty, the scene after Cait has injected Hawke with the drug to bring him around from the brain washing. The following scene is from Natural Born. Hope that helps.
You wrote under the more info: "If we could all see how much Cait cared for him, why couldn't Hawke? ". Hawke definitely knew Caitlin cared for him, but he still felt that he was cursed to have anyone that he loved die on him as so many before had done.
Now the way I personally feel is that Cait was too much of the little sister type for anything to really work between her and String. I always felt that they had chemistry in a brother-sister kind of way, but ot really romantically.
You took the words right off my fingers!! I mean, remember what Archangel said to Gabrielle - "Stringfellow believes that ANYONE he loves, or MIGHT LOVE, WILL DIE." And he cared too much about Cait to let anything happen to her. But they still would've made a great couple!!
I think Hawke worked hard at not letting anybody come too close, esp. those he really cared about. What a shame, because it didn't mean they loved him any the less...

You mean USA, right? Good theory about Cait taking care of Hawke @ the cabin -- something I hadn't considered. But a good idea!! :)

Cait was a real cool character. It would have been nice to have seen her fly AirWolf in a solo sky battle.
