In USSR it was extremely difficult to get good equipment, no one legally could afford Western gear, Musician sold their souls to get something from the west. These musician producing funk from Soviet equipment designed exclusively to please party member's and their communist taste in music, so forgive them if they got something wrong, bad equipment and the danger of going to jail certainly doesn't help. I know , my dad was musician in USSR.

My other account=funkmusicman & no-one really liked my generalisation that Funk=pre '75 & Disco post '75 - but in the UK the word Funk (even more so Funky) has been hijacked & used 2 describe almost anything whereas Jazz-funk somehow still manages 2 refer 2 a strict sub-genre of Funk, unmolested by the name-stealers. Just meant 2 say: I think the Soviets are playing Funk from the main Genre not the Jazzy sub-genre and deffo not Disco! :-)

The "Soviet" was actually censoring this kind of stuff. Jazz was considered a bourgeois genre, hence undesirable. "The music of the fat." That's why this is "unreleased."

There was a period when jazz was basically "suppressed." A notable example was Leonid Utyosov's band: started out with jazz, but were pressed into other music (Soviet chanson, really:). Later, Jazz was given a little more freedom. In my time (the 1980's) Soviet TV saw jazz bands, like Anatoly Kroll. After the "thaw", Soviet movie industry even made a movie about jazz censorship, called "Jazzman" (1983). You can find it on IMDB.
