they need to start making avatars now if they say its a simple thing then let them do it and let us have our dreams cometrue and then itll probably take about 20 years before they can find the planet and i just wanna be alive to see it before i die it will be like a dream a meichle itll make me cry
dude this is freaking amazing!! I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! I actually managed to rip it off of blu-ray (which I bought) and play it on my netbook. now I have it wherever I go!! ok i'm a bit obsessed, i admit it. now i just need to learn the language.
Because Dr Augustine set up a school with the Na'vi and taught them English. The thing I wonder about this was where they began in teaching each other, not understanding each other.
@jpgrygus Because Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) built a school and taught some of their children, including Neytiri and Tsu'tey, english. Wich is also the reason she invented the avatar-program, for easier interaction with the na'vi.
Not really, some of them are literal but most of them have very different meanings from the literal english and many of them say slightly different things (due to the limited vocab, as you mentioned)
@SEMAT56 Klingon isn't even a fully developed language, it's just gibberish. Na'vi is several real languages, romanian, latvian, tzwahili etc. merged into one. Kinda like what Tolkien did for the elf-language in lord of the rings, by mixing wellish, finnish, russian and latvian words into one language. In Star Wars and Star Trek they just spewed gibberish that sounded like a language.
@SEMAT56 One example of Star Wars: You know that the different races speak, supposedly, their own languages, but listening closely you notice that it's all in all the same, but they change little details. Like Jabba for instance, the word he says almost constantly is "chuuba", and you can also hear the ewoks say it once in a while.
Im really wondering that this is not only a "Speak and let it sound cool" language but a real working language developed for the film with grammar, pronounciation and so on...
If im inforemd right it took about 4 Years to develop it to its last and known point.
Good job man keep going (forgotten the Professors name xD)
Na'vi is indeed a fully developed language - at least in terms of phonology, grammatical structure. The vocabulary needs expansion for day-to-day communication, but it is indeed real.
Credit for this language goes to Paul Frommer, a linguist at USC.
this movie is the shit! omg ive seen it like a gazillion times...at least see it once in theaters they are trying to break all records with this movie...its already the top grossing worldwide film in box office ever! people who say to go watch it online watch in theaters first i really recomend u do that first
I agree. There should be a feature on the DVD/Blu-Ray that has one of the subtitle options as Na'vi. But anyways this Vid is awsome Great Job. You guys should do other famous movie clips like Star wars,Godfather, titanic and have the words translated in Na'vi. Just a thought.
Great job! You guys are awesome. For those of you being a little picky about the translations, please understand how new Na'vi is. We don't have that large of a vocab, so a lot of this is not direct translation. Hopefully one day we'll have neough that we can play around a lot more.
Well, we decided that with borrowed words we weren't going to put them in Na'vi phonetics since these are (obviously) going to be meant to be read really fast by a human and not a Na'vi. You're right though, that should probably have had the san and sìk on it.
Well, in the end we had to make compromises, same as with the Na'vi Only forum, there's just somethings we had to temporarily make up since we have no way to say it.
It doesn't matter, really. They both point towards the same pronounciation. It used to be "neu" but I think they changed it to "new" now to be consistent with other words using the "w" instead of "u".
Question(from me): Kaltxì ma eylan, ngaru lu fpom srak? Answer(from friend): Srane Answer(from me): Sìlstan I talk a bit Na'vi ( or is it nìNa'vi ? ) with a friend and when we start a talk its always the same beginning and its kinda boring

because it's a borrowed proper noun (and also because we have no easy way to say Titanic).
IRAMightyPirate 2 years ago
'(San) Taytänìk (sìk)' would have been better.

Well, we decided that with borrowed words we weren't going to put them in Na'vi phonetics since these are (obviously) going to be meant to be read really fast by a human and not a Na'vi. You're right though, that should probably have had the san and sìk on it.

@BornEntertainment Because they don't have an own word for it. Like in Japan, they don't have an own word for computer, so they say computa
