It does sand the wood, but due to the variations of the wood fibers density it results in a orange peel effect. A light sanding with a 180 grit sand paper levels the wood surface nicely. This bench was made of a mix of oak and walnut, softer woods will "orange peel" more deeply.
Generally, The machine uses one bag per hour. However on the wood bench the amount of soda is reduced to the minimum because of the density of the wood, ie the softer the wood, the less soda needed to clean it.

In what condition is the wood after this process? Does the softness of the media effectively "finish sand" the wood as well?
