This is a joke. How does an owl "hunt" in an enclosure. Even the horrible "falconers" that you say treat their birds so badly on other posts, would have hacked, or at LEAST conditioned the birds for release. These birds could barely fly 15 feet up to a tree. They most likely died within days. You spread malicious information about people who do more for birds of prey than any other group. Get a clue before you open that miss-guided mouth if yours. Owls are not even a common falconry bird. IDIOT!
Hacking is probably a better way to release GHOWs, especially those that came in young. It best mimics the way that parents care for their chicks; parents will provide for their young for a while until they're hunting sufficiently.
We do soft releases with some of our animals...but we keep human/animal contact to a minimum in order to keep them wild...we aren't open to the public, so that helps too. We have a very good success rate and stay very busy!
JJ,I'm not familiar with the word "hack". What does it mean? Once the owls are ready for live food, it is put in their enclosure and they actually have to hunt it...
It's a soft-release technique. For human-raised raptors, maybe a week before fledge age, they're moved to a home box from which they'll be released. Humans drop in food unobserved. After release, humans keep dropping in food, birds come and go until self-sufficient. Then they stop coming.

Awesome!!
you guys have done a wonderful thing
Owls are sacred in certain cultures
they know things we don't
i have recently had the honor to see 2 little eastern screech owls sitting on a fence just hanging out together.
they looked so happy
just looking at me watch them
Great work!
Love the video!!

We make sure they can hunt on their own before they are released...those peticular owls were released where they were found as babies also.

It appears that you don't hack these birds. So, I'm curious to know what sort of hunting lessons they get before release.
Thanks for the clip. -- JJ
