  • the Voice

  • they're so nervous!!

  • bob and grant are both gay. Bob is one of the best guitar players of all time. i saw them in 1985 it was overwhelmingly loud.

  • Comment removed

  • Only Bob was gay and big deal anyway because Husker Du(as well as Bob's solo records)was one kick ass band who influenced a lot of people and should not be forgotten for what they contributed to music.A lot of up and coming bands should pay attention to this band.Maybe they might learn something...

  • What's with the really annoying high-pitched sound?

  • @MRBLuD the tech spooks build in signal degradation, just 2 steps beyond perception.. anoying as fuck! we are going to be pissed at recordings from the 90's!

  • all musicians r gay. or switch, at least thats a fact i read it someplace it has to do with the brain, the same side that plays music also controls same sex ideas

  • Not one of Bob Mould's best vocal performances.

  • grants gay too. surprisingly geraldo man isnt.

  • mould is gay . not the whole band . jeez.

  • I love the duct tape on Bob's Flying V.

  • There is a movie or show or something were someone says "husker du? More like husker don't". What is it from? I can't remember for the life of me.

  • @CainmosniMirrored NEVERMIND. It's from Joe Dirt.

  • Is that Geraldo?

  • WHEN DID GERALDO REPLACE GREG NORTON!!!!

  • This is like Grunge Party having Englebert Humperdinck as a guest performer; not that Husker Du is that, but the contrast with Rivers is about as dramatic.

  • Husker Du at Joan Rivers show is one of the oddest publicity stunts ever in modern TV ever! There is no match whatsoever especially during the economically overheated yuppy late 80's.

  • Husker Du at Joan Rivers show is one of the oddest ever publicity stunts ever in modern TV ever! There is no match whatsoever especially during the economically overheated yuppy late 80's.

  • was that Bob Mould with Matthew Broderick and Geraldo Rivera?

  • look how young they all were.. joan too..! both of these performance rock better than the album cuts.. it's kinda funny joan doing the round robin on who's attitude is what in the band what with greg claiming he's a mellow influence.. i recall norton being to guy pogoing and caroming all over the place.. looks like he's being reserved for the big network performance..

  • the first time i heard husker du i remember thinking "oh so this is where nirvana got it from!"

  • joan rivers is awesome so is husker du

  • I remember distinctly the day I ripped open this album and put in on. I don't remember a lot of day

  • What strange world.

  • joan rivers is such a fake plastic rag doll. why can't she just age like everyone else. the plastic surgery just makes here look like a muppet

  • which other one is gay? it better be the bassist because the drummer doesn't look gay.

  • @llamasarus1 Ha, yeah the drummer (Hart) is gay. The bass player (Norton), although the gayest looking one, is actually the only straight member of the band. Not that there's anything wrong with that . . .

  • Husker Du were one of the most prolific rock band in the country??? REALLY? I had thought they were too underground for Joan Rivers.

  • these are cutting edge punk rock?

these brothers of punk changed the world as we no it.

thank god the mighty lords for husker du the descendents and social D

  • Brilliant.

  • Sexuallity? V`s Great fuckin songs?...I Know who the winner is...Great Gay Love Punk Rock Songs About Heroin Abuse ...Bollocks...Do You Rememember???

  • Bob Mould and Joan Rivers...could anything be more awkward?

  • These cats rocked. So loud and noisy, but so melodic.

Will say that Grant's mullet is 80's bad.

  • sheerly awesome, aNd this is actually the first time I've ever heard that bob n grant are gay- whoa!.....massive anticlimax- and who gives a fuck- I've been groooving and inspired by these guys right from the beginnings in faraway australasia- best fuckn band ever!- ;D

  • Of all bands in the world, Husker Du is the last of them that sexual preference has anything to do with, Their music is so bad ass that none of that shit matters to me. So fuck anyone that brings that shit up, They didn't make it public knowledge like the the faggots in Erasure. They just rocked the fuck out of people.

  • @patinovideo So, it's okay to be homosexual, just as long as your sensitivities aren't disturbed by having been made aware of that fact? Just as long as the fact is kept secret, your cool with it, but if anybody makes it "public knowledge" you're going to be upset and call people "faggots"? Okay, gotcha.

  • @bvscfanatic Well, you obviously took my comment the wrong way. My point is that you can play music, and live your life, without throwing your sexual preference out there. When I say "faggots" I'm talking about the guys that make it a point to shove it down your throat that they're gay. You are obviously gay or you would not have taken offense. If you aren't, then you are way too sensitive.

  • @patinovideo Perhaps an example might help me. Can you name some musicians for me who are "shoving it down your throat" that they are gay? I guess I've not noticed. Fact is, if anything, many gay entertainers have, for decades, gone to great lengths to NOT let the public know they are gay for fear of losing fans. And that must be a painful way to live.

  • @bvscfanatic How about this this.....fuck off you stupid fuck! I came here to talk about music, not your stupid ass gay bullshit. You know what bands I'm talking about. Erasure, The Smiths, etc. Are you gonna play dumb? I have no problem with any of that. I will not answer anymore stupid shit by you so fuck off.

  • @bvscfanatic i would say klaus nomi, but he doesn't do anything even remotely not wierd so i just tune out. And btw Grant is one of my crushes... i always tell people i look like him. which i do. (and yes, it is a painful way to live. expecially if your church would kick you out if they knew...)

'are you danish? because no one american speaks danish, right?'

  • @patinovideo You've got pretty big opinions for a guy with an intelligence level somewhere between that of a doorknob and a cactus.

  • @MaxxHark All I was trying to say was Husker Du didn't go out of their way to say, "Hey look at us! We're gay, we're gay! Check this out people, we're gay, we're gay!" They just played their music. If you look at my original comment, you will see only that. I'm no homophobe ro anything like that, but if you guys want to twist it around so it seems like I am, then knock yourself out.

  • Certainly not their best performance. Bob Mould is WAY off key. I saw them play at a club in Portland, Maine in 1986 and they blew the roof off the place. My ears are still ringing!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, I thought that was Geraldo Rivera on bass!

  • holy shit. i never knew they were gay. They r still cools.

  • greg norton is hotter than fishgrease

  • Grant said later that he was flabbergasted at being branded as "The wild boy" in the band, maybe he felt he was being patronised, or maybe he just read to much into it.

  • "Hoosker"? Have I been pronouncing it wrong this entire time?

  • Hüsker Dü, Replacements, Dream Syndicate, True West, Band of Outsiders, Rain Parade, Jeff Dahl, Plan 9, Plasticland.............. so many cool bands in the 80s

  • How did they end up with Joan Rivers?

  • You can hear Joan scream at 7:22 ; )

  • one of my all time favorite singing drummers UROK grant!

  • Nice interview Joan. Make people feel uncomfortable much?

  • Wait. The guy with the Snidely Whiplash moustache was the straight one? Nothing makes sense anymore.

  • Bob Mould is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. In London in 1985 everyone stood with their jaws open as he played. It was SO loud.

  • Oh, ironically enough, it was Greg who sported the crazy huge mustache and look that could be interpreted as stereotypically "gay." And he's not!

  • It's like with Freddy Mercury, maybe more so- Bob and Grant transcend the stigma or stereotype of being "gay." In his music and his stage presence Bob is one of the "toughest" guys around and Husker orig. played for sweaty, aggro, often violent punks. Their music has absolutely nothing to do with "gayness" - only perhaps some of Bob and Grant's lyrics reflect their own personal relationships- but are written pretty gender-ambiguous. I once interviewed Bob and he's an intense, straight-up dude.

  • so far ahead of their time.... it still sounds fresh.

  • Oh wow, they're gay? that is awesome.

  • Bob Mould has no daughter. What are u smoking, salinagrrrl69?

This was a cool moment for that band, in terms of exposure. Bob Mould and Joan Rivers. Surreal. LOL. If only any of you really KNEW. Holy shit. Lids would flip.

  • @Vengeance509

I think you mean wigs would flip.

  • Bob has a gourgeous daughter. She was about 14 when I saw her picture. I cannot remember when that was now. She looked like her pop. But it worked on her.

  • Greg seems to get the biggest cheer...mibbee it's the mustache?

  • Grant looks and sounds like MAtthew Broderick

  • they, for me started to really grate after "new day rising".....really the best stuff are some of the songs from the early eps -- more rhythmic interest.........zen aracade was good lofi fun too.

  • Man those were some embarrassing questions... "Who's the calm one?"... If I were interviewing Husker Du I'd have some more interesting questions lined up.

  • no one else thinks that its funny that joan rivers has at least listened to husker du?

  • @boomboxlamf i do

  • @boomboxlamf it's pretty funny to think about

  • What a great tight performance of this song

  • Damn I Had Know Idea Grant Sang While Playing Drums, Thats Sick

  • "My name is Bob Mould" *applause*

That's the correct response when ever anyone hears a name of a Husker Du member, in any situation.

I Can't believe I've only just found out about Husker Du.

Why didn't anyone tell me about Husker Du? :D

  • @Teveh the media hides these things from people

  • Grant rules.

    Greg's moustache rules.

    Bob.....ehh.

  • To Greg Norton: My apologies for getting on stage and trying to get you to high five me in the middle of a song when you came to Portland in '87... I felt badly when you just looked at me and shook your head in disgust.

  • I'd kill for a reunion.

  • @mattisprettycool Here,Here! i think we ALL would.

  • I'm grateful for any HD footage...

...but this is such a miserable end for a great band.

Bob is just about gritting his teeth through this interview.

Somehwere Greg Ginn must have been cringing...

  • It's a shame Grant Hart didn't get the same publicity Bob got in his subsequent career.

    Both excellent songwriters.

  • Agreed. I saw them when new day rising came out and Grant was was amazing. His voice was amazing.

  • Folk song lyrics+speed metal music=Husker Du!

  • Top 5 greatest records of the rock era. Listen and tell me I'm wrong.

  • Use a part of your brain, please. Joan did not do the booking on her own Show.

  • The song She's a woman taught me a lot.

  • good for Joan, she actually cared enough to find out stuff about the band and had them play TWICE. That really makes me respect her that much more.

  • She must be quite open-minded; it was very unusual for a mainstream figure such as JR to be that tolerant of a band of that sort in those times.

  • yeah seriously. although iheard she bought into the whole "Grunge fashion" thing in the early '90s

  • great find..

  • Bob Mould's voice is anthemic.

  • Props to Joan for saying their name right!

  • But she got the first song wrong. She said "You could be the one". A bizzare appearance indeed

  • Most stylish moustache in rock for Greg!!! And Grant, yeah, u are definitely the Wild Boy!!!

  • I love how she chucks the record behind the desk -- as if it is contagious and diseased....

  • nice observation

  • what's that a gay talk show? ian mckellen after hüsker dü? :) funny.... anyway hüsker dü is great, and hugely influential

  • fuck yes

  • Husker Du was never very political,a few songs on was it everything falls apart,or Zen Arcade,I own all the albums ecept from Warehouse, never fancied that one. Sugar have more the right sound,i think. The mini album, ooh cannot remember the name, but on it there is a song called Diane, that is one of my favorites. I also think that they look like clean cut normal people is facinating,no bad boy mohawk image bollocks, they go on stage,do their work and dissepear And their earliest albums:great!!!

  • I think she said "prolific", not "political".

  • I think the album that Dianne is on is "metal circus".

  • YOU Could be the One? She obviously doesn't listen to the Du.

  • I bet the whole time they were playing, Joan was thinking, "This is definitely not Sammy and Dean at the Sands."

  • Oh, I take that back. She totally fucks up with 'singing to a better medley' lol genius!

  • Fantastic band, but sorry to say Husker Du with the little dots above the Us is neither Danish (or Norwegian, as I saw on another clip), It is Swedish. Only Swedish uses those. PS Joan does nothing wrong, leave her be.

  • Good point, but the umlauts have nothing to do with languages, they're just 'rock dots.'

  • Right, like in Mötley Crüe, lol

  • Actually right, with the dots used in swedish letters, but husker du doesnt mean anything in Swedish,in Denmark and Norway,it means as he said in this interview. Husker Du said straight out means do you remember in English, That is Danish & Norwegian language. I remember there was an old TV show in the only non commersial norwegian tv-channel. And there was an issue there, only bcause I was not on planet earth in my mind by the time not sure, but I think the Show tried too sew the band for the name

  • Grant looks a little paunchy.

  • big THANKS for this one, best thing I seen for months.

  • Yeah, "hoosker doo" is actually the correct pronounciation..so they had that written on her cue cards...if you listen to any interviews with Bob, he'll pronounce it the same way...it would have been nice to get Grant's perspective on Joan, but he had already booked by then...

  • whos that clown...hoosker doo?

  • I actually met Bob & Greg the night after this performance at a Husker show in Seattle. When Greg was asked what he thought of Joan, he said, "She was alright. She even pronounced our name right! They had on her cue cards Hoosker Doo!" When I asked Bob the same question, he grew serious and said,"It was pretty unnerving, to be honest with you. It was pretty embarrassing...we really couldn't wait to get out of there..."

  • Could be the most embarrassing interview ever. "Singing to a better medley"? Uh, okay Joan.

  • Wow, Joan Rivers fucked that up.

This is Husker Du with You Could Be The One!

Oh my God, she makes me ashamed to be Jewish.

  • she says 'here to PERFORM you could be the one, its Husker Du'

so where is the fuck up???????

  • should i say 'Here to SING You could be the one, is Husker Du'

(to correct myself there ;-) )

  • The song is called COULD YOU BE THE ONE and not YOU COULD BE THE ONE, THERE IS THE FUCK UP!

    Cheers.

  • this destroys the studio version by a fucking mile

  • Bob Mould and Grant Hart were. Greg Norton is married to a woman and owns a restaurant now. I used to love watching homophobes dancing to Husker Du in the late 80's and 90's singing every word of gay love songs.

  • I think some people have a hard time getting their heads around the fact that while two of these guys are gay, they don't consciously go about their lives with that fact changing how they treat people or view things. It means even less to how they play music. It just doesn't. Personally and romantically speaking, I'm sure it does matter. But when Bob Mould goes to play a G chord he's not thinking " I wonder if my sexuality is gonna come across the way i hit this chord." It's just silly.

  • Beautifully put.

  • @woodoven Being straight I have no problem with artist and their preference of men or women. Pretty petty when you think of it. Music breaks bounderies and thats the way it should be. Art is art no matter who what or where it comes from. And yes Bob Mould rocks.

  • @woodoven wow i never knew that the guitarist/singer and drummer were gay. I still think this band was fuckin amazing

  • @woodoven

I have a hard time how clean shaven and preppy Mould got for this "appearance" on this show...he was always the ambitious one though eh...too bad he can't submerge the ego and make the many fans out there happy by playing a wee bit with Grant and Greg...I mean Bob already is bitching in 86? 87? here about how he can't criticize the government anymore cos his emotional spectrum is "wider" so yeah...lol

  • Wow...I never knew.....(i dont care) but you know my other fav band back in the day was the Judy Bats They were super gay and i never knew it.....MAKES ME WONDER

  • Comment removed

  • Who the fuck cares? I certainly didn't. They were the best.

  • @RoyalSouvenir

    hahahahaa...totally.

I don't know how familiar you are with Los Crudos...but it's the same thing

their lead singer is now in a band called Limp Wrist

  • Bob and Grant were gay... Bob Moulds new record is badass!

  • gotta love the mic hovering above the heads hahahaha

  • Hey Joan rivers looked human back then, and I remember when a 12in record wasn't a foriegn object to most people. good time's

  • Thats a hell of a shirt

  • Bob & Grant even shared a smile during this performance during the end of the solo. Who would've thought they weren't getting along & that this would be the last Husker album. I guess all good things have to come to an end sometimes.

  • My favorite Husker Du song along with "New Day Rising" and "Gravity". . .I want my guitar to sound like that. . .wonder what Bob used for create that noisy-chimey sound?

And they sound so fuckin' awesome playing live. So clean!

  • That's so true. Definitely cleaner than most of their albums. Usually it's the other way around.

  • i also love "Gravity." that rolling bass part just sends me every time. if that's not my favorite tune of theirs, it might be "Standing By Th Sea."

  • lol..."You could be the one".

    Awesome performance.

  • Does anyone know what modle and year V Mr.Mould is using in this ????

  • it's a knock-off of an Ibanez Rock'n'Roll V called "Rock'n'Roll SR." A punk rocker had little pay and those things cost like $200-ish back then. Now, they're worth $1200 or so.

  • "hoo skadoo"

  • This is so nuts. Hukser Du were really ahead of their time; this sounds like something that belongs in the mid 90s, not 1987. Oh yeah, they sound so much better live. Much be the crappy recording quality of their Warner and SST records; I wish they'd remaster them.

  • for sure man. sst had alot of issues i didnt care for...black flag, descendents...for one, all the drums sound so smacky, like hitting human skin.

  • funny.. i remember missing this show because i was out playing basketball and went out for for beers afterwards... now twenty years later ,first time....

  • haha..this is so weird

but i guess they were made for "bigger things"..whatever that means

  • thats soo rad

  • Saw this live back in the day and have it on VHS somewhere. Great to see it again - thanks for posting!

  • Why are they called Husker du ? "husker du" means "do you remember" in danish :S

  • According to Michael Azerrad's "Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991," Bob, Grant, and Greg were jamming, playing Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer." One of the song's verses is in French, so one of them started yelling all the foreign phrases he could think of. One of the phrases that was yelled was "Husker Du." And the rest is history.

  • hmm.. ok, funny... thx

  • it the same in norwegian ;)

  • It's also the same in norwegian ;)

  • super style!!!!!!!

  • Husker Du , The Marquee , Wardour St . 1985/06 ..? Anyone at that one ? Tell me aboot it .

  • The joan rivers show was way ahead of it's time. She had the cult on as well as the mission uk.

  • Joan Rivers had a talk show with Husker Du playing??? fucking bizarre...

  • she says "You Could Be The One"

  • I doubt Joan really liked them. Damn this is awesome though.

  • hi,

I was wondering if by any chance you have 'All of my senses' by Grant Hart. I love it so much, I don't know who had put it on youtube but it's now gone...

    Tim

  • Loved them back then..notice how much more intelligent they sound than their contemporaries.

  • I would have liked to see Husker Du play this show in 1981 :)

  • these guys sound very before their time.. I thought this was a nineties rock band.

  • Oh my gosh, this brings back such happy memories...I actually met Bob Mould in the 80's...was dating someone who knew him before he got so famous...anyhoo...I remember it was April in Minnesota and freezing and we three went to a wrestling match together...I was wearing a white mini-skirt and a top made out of rags and lime green gloves...woo-hoo....we had so much fun and Bob was amazingly laid back and almost shy in a cute kind of way...very very nice guy...it was such an awesome time!!!!!!!!!!

  • Not cool.

  • Really?

Thank you very much for this important news

  • So are you, closet case.

  • The bass player looks like Geraldo Rivera.

  • Holy fuck, he does!!!!!!!!!!

  • It might have been an uncomfortable interview for the band, but it still came out well. Joan Rivers at least did her homework. Remember, she is a lot older than the band, and this was the 80's, where bands like Husker were rarely on ANY KIND of TV.

  • That was RADICAL!

  • Classic. I love GBV and suspect Husker Du is in part responsible for their inspiration.

  • I think Husker Du were behind alot of great band's influences.

  • -Will you come back again Please come back!

  • I loved these guys...didn't they break up like a month later?

  • Yup, unfortunately this was the bitter end for our heroes...

  • love that boom mic floating around up top!

  • haha, i love it when grant gives her a hug

  • I actually prefer this over the version on Warehose. The vocal melody is incredible.
