I own several kershaw/kai knives and this is by far the worst designed/most uncomfortable horrible knife of the bunch. It also does not hold an edge as well as my others, including even the ones using 8Cr13MoV.
I just picked one up for $10 on eBay & I agree with some of your points. (Not about the studs "hurting" tho!) But you're right, it is way too stiff opening. this would have been a good design to make a flipper, like the Zing, which opens beautifully, with the stud or flipper. The Vapor will flip open perfectly with the stud maybe once out of 25 times for me. I'm thinking of giving it to my nephew for a 1st knife, but I'm afraid he'll need stitches before long! Good vid, anyhow.
i believe that the step-style thumbstud is more geared towards the kershaw knives with speed assist. b/c it doesn't have speed assist, just flick more with your wrist, it's less work for your thumb.
Ok, counter arguements, the thumb studs, do not hurt. You just have to be less of a girl. ive never hurt me at all. and the pivot screw , you never need to loosen it, use dremel one drop lube and its fine. and since you moded it now it has play mine is super used no play what so ever fact i just used it less then a min ago to open some zipties and the blade dulls after about 10 months thats when it started to dull but a quick run over on a stone no prob
well one, you could be less condescending. Two, I removed the mod, I did oil it before loosening the pivot screw, it still has play even after I have tightened it back up. My temporary mod does not account for the vertical play that has developed.
I think mine may just have been a lemon that slipped through, because most other people have had descent experiences with theirs.
i have the same knife, but the half serrated verion. when new it was almost impossible to open with one hand. over time it loosened up, now it flys open. took a long time though.
i agree with all of this, except the controversy over the thumb stud, if you do not know how to open this knife properly it will chafe at your thumb, you have to open it by pushing diagonally up, not out and up. the safetly lock on the blade will hold it if you try to go out with the blade first.
@DJDeathRevenant You didn't offer any counter argument, Just a ill informed opinion in strangely garbled language. Obviously this model suffers from some quality control issues. You can not logically comment on whether this persons thumbstud hurts someone or not, without examining the actual knife. Some people should not have access to computer keyboards.
Umm, mostly online, There is also an outdoors store I sometimes visit called LeBaron, they have an ok selection. I can send you the link to my favourite online knifedealer if you'd like. Canadian too
I completely agree with the points you made. The biggest issue I have with it is the opening. It's just too stiff. It gets annoying for everyday carry. I purchased a Cold Steel Voyager Medium size for my EDC use. I use it as a backup now because it is a great knife otherwise.
I've had one about a month now and the opening issues seemed to be more technique issues than design. They also seem to get easy to open the more they are used. For 18 bucks at wal-mart, I don't see how one could go wrong. I agree though, I would rather have a spyderco at this price point.
hey man nice review, i think my review on this knife is the only other one so well done for putting another on. i agree with you about the knife, it is good for the money but you can get better for your money aswell, i still like it tho, i find it rides in the pocket really well..
ya for sure, very few knives are as thin and carry-able as this one. It's good for menial tasks like cutting boxes, but I wouldn't classify it as a workhorse.
Hey, I had the same problem! Well, I wasn't actually using a Kershaw. I was using a Gerber, and it was hard to open. I thought loosening the pivot screw was going to help, but I guess I was wrong.
ya exactly, with most knives that are hard to open all you can do is oil it best you can and try to work it a lot by playing with it and hopefully it isn't like opening a vice
You have two hands. Use them to open it.:D

theres a little bump on the locking side of the frame. I took it apart and filed it down a little bit, now it works great.

It's hard for a cheap knife to be very good; for me plade play ruins all the fun from a knife

i have a vapor II and ive never had a problem with it. opens with a perfect ammount of tension and locks up very well.
justinkrz1992 3 years ago
so they made some improvements to that model, cuz my vapor 1 now has vertical bladeplay from the lock not coming up to hit the tang enough
