I think it's easier to use a pick, but the tone just sounds weird. The only time I'd use one is when covering a song where the bassist used a pick.

I personally can't use a pick, but nothing wrong with doing so. It just gives a different sound to the bass, and is a skill I'd like to learn to add another depth to some of my bands music. I play with fingers atm and using a pick would just add another dimension. Take "Iron Man" first half is played on fingers and the end is played with a pick :p

lright, I play with both a pick and my fingers, and I can play hallowed be thy name with and without one, and it doesn't really bother me which way I play, but with a pick you get more of a defined and harder tone than with your standard fingers, and not to mention that playing with a pick is easier on your fingers, but both still have their backdrop and flaw. Also, most metal bassists play with a pick.

Well not sure, I play it with small back and fourth movements real fast along with Steve's rhythm, basically just recreating what he makes it sound like, although i use a pick so I developed the galloping sound he has through pick use, i dunno how to explain, sorry. :/
