Thank you so much for posting 20 seconds of some of the best of Cagney! Just watched Yankee Doodle Dandy last night for the umpteenth time. I've been a Cagney fan for longer than I care to admit! The greatest ever! My absolute favourite actor. We'll never see the likes of him again...
These scene symbolizes the good, old Hollywood! A true classic with one of the most talented actors ever - a real charactre! And, by the way, black and white movies have a very special charme of their own.
Oh my goodness! This brings me back to when I was the NCOIC at the Killeen Police Depratment in 1987. The old Jailor there, James "Jim" Treone was a retired soldier, a veteran of Korea and 4 tours of Vietnam. The film, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY came up in our many discussions. I told Jim that my favourite part was when James Cagney, after receiving his honor from FDR; skedaddled in a tap dance down the Whitehouse stairs. There in blazing B&W sent my soul flying! Thank you to the poster. Godspeed.
The dance steps down the stairs at "The White House" set was total improvisation by Cagney and the director kept it in the scene --- adding the music post production --- and it became not only the most memorable moment in a truly great film but one of the most memorable scenes in motion picture history.
how the fuck did he do that?

Cagney, for improvising it;
