If I remember correctly, at the time the VG's analog outputs were going into an ART stereo tube preamp, and then to powered Behringer studio monitors. I also ran the VG's guitar "direct out" to my Roland GP-100 for the clean tone. I now run the VG's digital output to a Tascam FW1082, then to the preamp, then the monitors.

Nice work there! could you please tell me if there is possible to use the vg99 without the special pickup? Just straight from the guitar output to the vg input?
Up to a point, but you'll be missing a lot of what the VG is all about. IOW, without the pickup it's "approximately" a Boss GT-PRO - two parallel channels of efx, amp models, etc. But you won't be able to use Freeze, any of the guitar models, etc.
I bit the bullet and had a luthier install the internal GK pickup that Roland sells into my "Frat" (Fernandes Strat). Works very well, and he didn't have to route out as much wood as I thought he would.
damn, since I'm so out of it I didn't actually verify it... is it just holding out the note or chord that you "freeze" it on? IE, it's sustaining the synth sound that is being generated when you use the freeze function?.. that would be what I'd heard referred to as hold.
Does it have an arpeggio (arpeggiator) function? as well?
Firstly, the VG-99 isn't a synth in the sense that the GR stuff is. I can't really explain what it *is* (at least in the limited space here), just what it isn't 8^) . But anyway, you can sustain any tone that the VG can generate - guitar, "synth" (GR300 sounds), etc. You set it up to Freeze the "A" side, and then you can play the "B" side over that. (or vice versa.)
There is no arpeggiator - hmmm, that would be neat, but I don't think it's possible given the way the VG works.
Hrm, yea I'd heard this is more geared toward tone-modelling than synth... I didn't even notice before that there's no midi pickup on you're guitar. I think I may have an idea of what the freeze function is. Neat as it may be, I'm looking for something else... something in particular... and I'm guessing I am gonna hafta go midi to get it... (damnit)
actually my Fernandes Strat does have a GK-3-style pickup mounted internally.
Before you go buy something else, at least go to a store that has the VG set up to demo and play with it for a while. It's a very deep but easy to use machine, and the programmability (pedals, etc.) alone is very well done and flexible. And - it of course has MIDI out although I haven't messed with that much (haven't felt the need). You could run that into a synth that arpeggiates, etc.
hrm, I've never been able to find a demo anywhere... this is something I'm gonna hafta check out on my own. Opinions struggle to show me how much I need this, lol.
Um... is the freeze the same thing as the "hold" function? I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. I'm a bit confused. It didn't really sound like anything special was going on there.
I'm not sure what you mean by "hold function" - Roland calls it Freeze which is where you can play a chord and then Freeze it while you solo (or whatever) over it. In the demo I play an A chord and solo for a while, then move down to a G and noodle over that.
If you don't find it special that's fine, but it's one of my favorite features of the VG-99.
I believe there are other demos of Freeze either here or on the Roland site, which might be better examples of the effect than what I did.
Ok, nevermind. On the older Roland Models I think they may have called it hold. I was just trying to confirm that this was either "hold" or "freeze." By which-ever terminology, the same thing.
I didn't mean anything harsh by that. I was just really damn tired, and grumpy from excessive work or somethin. Still am,actually. lol.
Note to xatzkostas/etc.: I have tried three times, in both IE7 and Firefox, to reply to posts here and something isn't working correctly. To answer your question - no, I don't know of any VG-99 patch sites, but I do recommend vguitarforums dot cee oh emmm as a "community" for this really neat toy.
Very cool vid. Does the freeze also allow for hold but decay? I'd like to be able to play a chord but let it ring out and fade normally and still play over it.
I don't know of a way to do that. You could modulate the frozen sound with one of the expression pedals as a workaround, but I know that isn't as cool as just having it do it by itself.
Don't forget the VG's midi interface though; you could do something with an external synth.
There are actually two solo things happening - one is the A side of the VG (the B side is used for the Freeze sound), and the other is the Guitar Out of the VG going to my Roland GP-100. The GP is not turned up too much, so it just gives an edge to the VG's clean sound. The VG patch uses the MOD-STRAT model, with the following FX after that: COMP, DLY, CHO, RE. It then goes into the "JC Bright Clean" amp model.
If you want the patch settings, I can send you the VG-99 Editor file.

Thanks for the kind words. It was just a little made-up-on-the-spot jam to show off the Freeze feature.
(Side note to 15PercentN1 - don't hot start that thing! 8^) )
