Yeah, you're right. NHL refs: Art Skov, Wally Harris, Bruce Hood, and Dave Newell were terrible NHL officials during the 1970s and early 1980s. That is why there were so many brawls. Oh, by the way, the late Art Skov was the worse of the lot because he was always calling the wrong players for the stupid Third Man in violation.

On a breakaway you could yank the guy down, not to mention the refs put away the whistles in the last 5 minutes of a close game and they let the players decide the game on their own. I was there that night. I've been to many great games at the Forum and that was a memorable one. I kept the ticket stubs in a scapbook for several years but they got lost in subsequent moves.
They didn't put them out of the league the quebec fans didn't care about the crapy nordiques after coming in last year after year. They moved to Colorado and won the Stanley cup 2 Years later so they are still there, just a different place. the nhl should contract!!! no more than 12 teams in a conference ... east vs west.. colorado and vancouver should be the farthest west the nhl should go!! quebec deserves a team.
NHL expansion has really killed the good rivalries. Forgetting the brawling which occurred here and can be a real drag it's gotten to a point where the average fan has to get excited about the Vancouver Canucks playing the Nashville Predators in February sometimes. The NHL and NBA should just split the leagues, have the east teams play the east teams, West teams play the West teams and then the finals could be a real style match up. It would cut down on travel and improve rivalries.
@ChrisDutch I'm a preds fan, and I agree. I want to be in a division with ATLANTA. There's a bigger corporate rivalry with that town, and we can't compete with them in pro sports. Damned shame. Same with Carolina. That's how you pack an arena, you create hate.

@ChrisDutch I wouldn't go that far. They schedule the teams to play rivals more than other teams but I agree it could be better. Have a few games against the east. That way when the east does cross over people want to see what kill is over there.

#1: The Canucks and the Predators ARE in the same "league" (it's called a conference).
#2: They already play almost exclusively in their conference. Post-lockout they faced division opponents 8 times a year. It wasn't popular and did nothing at all to create rivalries. Rivalries form in the postseason.
#3: "West plays west, east plays east, then they meet" exists -- it's call the playoffs.
They tried that like 3-4 years ago when each team played their division 8 times a season and only one division from the other conference one (5 games), people bitched and the league went to its current format.

I was there that night. I've been to many great games at the Forum and that was a memorable one. I kept the ticket stubs in a scapbook for several years but they got lost in subsequent moves.

They didn't put them out of the league the quebec fans didn't care about the crapy nordiques after coming in last year after year. They moved to Colorado and won the Stanley cup 2 Years later so they are still there, just a different place. Probably not normally fighting majors are off setting unless there is an instegator which there wasnt back then. They may have not had enough players to play though.

NHL expansion has really killed the good rivalries. Forgetting the brawling which occurred here and can be a real drag it's gotten to a point where the average fan has to get excited about the Vancouver Canucks playing the Nashville Predators in February sometimes. The NHL and NBA should just split the leagues, have the east teams play the east teams, West teams play the West teams and then the finals could be a real style match up. It would cut down on travel and improve rivalries.

@ChrisDutch I'm a preds fan, and I agree. I want to be in a division with ATLANTA. There's a bigger corporate rivalry with that town, and we can't compete with them in pro sports. Damned shame. Same with Carolina. That's how you pack an arena, you create hate.
Of course, they'll move Atlanta up to Winnipeg and we'll exchange divisions. That'll be cool too.

@ChrisDutch I wouldn't go that far. They schedule the teams to play rivals more than other teams but I agree it could be better. Have a few games against the east. That way when the east does cross over people want to see what kill is over there.

#1: The Canucks and the Predators ARE in the same "league" (it's called a conference).
#2: They already play almost exclusively in their conference. Post-lockout they faced division opponents 8 times a year. It wasn't popular and did nothing at all to create rivalries. Rivalries form in the postseason.
#3: "West plays west, east plays east, then they meet" exists -- it's call the playoffs.

They tried that like 3-4 years ago when each team played their division 8 times a season and only one division from the other conference one (5 games), people bitched and the league went to its current format.
