Core 2 and iX series are for desktops. Xeons are for servers. The Xeon is basically (for this generation) an i7 with added features like power management and the ability to be run in parallel with one or more other CPUs. So one on one they are not that much better than say an i7 of similar speed, but if you're trying to build a server Xeon has the edge of over i7.
