It shows how out of touch some pop stars are.In 1971 David Bowie asked "Is There Life On Mars ?".....of course there was....it was full of Martians dancing and singing "Eeee eee eee eeee"
Believe me or not. But these guys right here in this song. Are my cousins. Two are dead, and one is still living. Nobody here would believe me, but still, they would be so happy to know how popular this still is.
@puppylover5681 : You were a cousin of the Rappaports? That is pretty neat! I loved this song as an eight-year-old. I thought I would never hear it again until I found it on YouTube! As I remember, one of the Rappaports went to Brandeis and went on to have a very successful career as a lawyer, but still treasured the experience of making this record. Which of the cousins have passed on?
@puppylover5681 Steven Rappaport died of a heart attack, quite unexpectedly. I had the great pleasure of meeting him, before he moved to Oregon, where he spent his last years. By the way he HATED this picture sleeve!
Respond to this video...I actually think 2 of them died. The lawyer is the one that's alive. And, I only knew 2 of them, because my dad told me about this.
I was 9 years old when I first heard the song in the summer of 1963. After that, I didn't hear it again on radio until 20 years later. Now I can listen to the song any time I'm in the mood for it. Thanks for posting it.
My friend did his own version of the Martian "hop". He'd dance around a bit, and pretend to "drop" a load on the floor and then proceed to point at it and dance around his little treasure, martian style!
Hilarious.
We were 8 btw! and it was 1968 - you had to get your entertainment where you could it being there was no xbox or PS!
This song would blare over the huge sound system on a ride called the Swiss-Bob at Seaside Heights New Jersey. It was on Casino Pier and the guy running the ride would shout into a microphone, "You wanna to faster?" The girls would scream "NO" and the guys would scream "Yes". I forgot about that until I heard this song.
Somehow, this song got incorperated into my High School play. That's why I looked it up in the first place, becuase it's incredibly hard to learn when you don't know the tune and the words don't make any sense.
Omg, I haven't heard this in I think 40-something yrs, seriously! My older brother had this & Mom always put a piece of white adhesive tape with our name on whoever's 45 it was so we could take them to our friends. I have got to know who's name is on that white tape!?!
Is there any tune that isn't on YouTube? I haven't heard this one for a good 25 years, the last time was on Dr. Demento's radio show in Atlanta. The chorus sticks in your mind like gum on your shoe sole. "EEE EEE EEE EEE EEE The Martian Hop!" Thanks for posting this m1. :-)
if i look in the closet, ill probably find at least 10 copies of this record: for some reason i bought it over and over. now i look back and see i wasnt too bright, but i did like this song...
Well emb, it all depends. At about 70 cents a copy, you did really well if you bought them with the picture sleeve. That sleeve is quite rare now. Just the record is worth 5-10 bucks mint, so you even did well if you didn't play all of them
another great memory of all the fun songs I heard on my transistor radio, when I was 8 years old in 1963. The station was KSEE-1480 (K-See 1-48) in Santa Maria, CA
This was the first 45 I ever bought. We didn't even have a record player! I used to go next door to our neighbour's house and ask if I could play it on their ancient record player. I could have played it for hours Mrs Wall was OK for 3or 4 turns then would say " OK that's enough". Adults can be so mean! Still have that record.
Growing up in the 50's and 60's was so much different than this NEW millenium ~ we had some very different songs back then ~ and this certainly was one of them that ranked at the TOP of my list. It wasn't played a lot on the radio but I NEVER forgot it and always thought of it as my FAVORITE doo wop song. As Bob Hope would say: "Thanks for the MEMORIES".. God bless.
No, this group was comprised of Steven Rappaport, Robert Rappaport and John Spirt. I had the great honor of talking with and meeting the late Steven Rappaport. He was a gentleman if there ever was one.
Nothing is meant personally to the poster, but Steven HATED that picture sleeve!
I was 13 in 1963 when this record was released, it was the beginning of my record collection (the 26th 45 I had ). Today I have over 50,000 45's but some just stand out more htan others, this is one of them. My 45's are all original releases, kept in record sleeves with picture sleeves separately kept in plastic sleeves.
I'm exactly as old as you Recordman1950 and this was one of my first 45's too ! Your firsts stay with you always - probably be humming it as I die, just like Orson Welles' "rosebud" and they'll all be thinking why's she singing like a martian . . . at a time like this !!!
For more info on this song, search Google for "The Martian (Hop) Chronicals" and you'll find a really interesting article written about 9 years ago by band member Steven Rappaport about the band and this song.
I was 11 when this came out in 1963, and being in the UK (where it never charted) theionly way I could hear this was to listen to the chart show each wek from AFN (American Forces Network) beaming from Germany.
