In november 2010 i bought a 1997 subaru outback wagon with 165k on her. 3 weeks later i drove from Boston to Raleigh NC and back. The check engine light came on, on the way back around the NYC area. it went off by itself, 3 weeks later. haven't had any problems with this car sense. 4 years older than my previous one with over double and a half of the amount of millage. still going strong.
I don't know how your having a problem with ur silverado. im not sure of your year but i have a 92 S10 blazer that isn't having any real problems. biggest one i have right now is a blown fuse and cut ebrake cable they'll only end up costing me around $30 to fix. the engine still runs good to. keep in mind my isn't a vortec engine

If you wanted a truck though or full sized SUV i would most likely recommend ford. Good trucks they do make. But for cars like the accord. You just can't go wrong with it. GM marketing division can open their fat mouths as much as they want about them thinking the malibu is better. IT Isn't. The accord has had many years of refining the car. and was one of the first to actually have independent front double wishbone, and multi-link rear suspension. Engines are still to this day bulletproof.
Either way if you are buying a so called "import" toyota or honda. You are still technically helping our economy. STOP! Why you might ask? Well truth be told. The car part contend in most of the toyotas and hondas these days are in fact mostly american. If you are considering a car I would highly suggest Honda. since they are a step ahead in build quality than toyota. My 99 accord has 140k miles. Absolutely no problems. You just change the oil when necessary and it runs and runs and runs.

I love my silverado!!!if my truck were low on oil, you can bet it would seize.. they both have problems. even so, parts for imports are very expensive compared to American. the fact i take really good care of my truck and keep up on PM, and he beats his to shit. im replacing break lines, abs parts, fuel tanks and senders... 8 yrs old/65k miles. and he meed a new o2 sensor after 8 years/200k makes you wonder.
@scalp340 I dont understand how you are having that many problems... My chevys last me forever. My 98 tahoe has 150k on it and only thing changed is brakes etc... Well if you live where it snows and salt like i do, your going to be changing brake lines and stuff like that. Trannys and engine in a silverado last forever. Even your year, we have 3 of them at my work with just about 200k. one with 189, one with 178, and another with 167k.
don't listen to 390merc65. It's normal for the engine use a quart a month with average driving. Fresh oil's thicker than old oil, clean and lubricates the engine.
During use, the heat dissolves its lubrication values and absorbs unburned gas/ air mix escaping through the piston rings and goes in the engine's lower half, where most of the oil is.
After a while, it gets so thin the heat burns off the oil. Drive it 5 months without adding oil or changes and u'll have little or no oil left.
BTW, you aren't the only one. I've heard female nurses at my hospital talk all about their husbands' Silverados breaking down twice a week, but their Camry or Corolla, which they bearly maintain (most of the time, their husbands do it when they're not fixing their trucks :) LOL), keeps on running without problems.
Besides, other GM truck owners had "piston slap" engine knock problems. Check em out online. The piston slap was caused by the pistons and rings not made to fit properly. People complained, GM said it was "normal" and "shove your truck up your ass" or "S.O.L.- fix it yourself."
The trucks were only a couple years old and now they have to scramble to keep finding replacement engines once a year or so.
BTW, IT IS FRUSTRATING to keep pride in your American vehicle because you love it, but you hate it because you either keep fixing it, only to have it keep breaking down or the repair didn't work and you'll have to fix it again.
haha, yea. i've been having constant abs misfires. so i took them out and cleaned them. put them back in and then had a yellow abs light and red brake light on in the dash. so i replaced both sensors. reset the "codes" lights went out. but now i still have a abs misfire every once in again when slowing to a complete stop. 9 years old, but 65k original miles and it might as well be disposable after 5 years regardless.
Man, after all the trouble you're getting with your truck, now I'm glad I don't buy a new American car. I drive a 96 dodge stratus. There's loads wrong with it or about it, but I've got NO WHERE NEAR the amount of problems you've had, especially with the ABS. I'm at 134,915 miles. It's cheap to run and drive, but definitely not a performance car.
Aside from people's personal preference in imports, overall resale value, dependability, quality, price, popularity with kids, practicality, versatility, import execs reinvesting in the company to hire more people & make better cars, & frustrated customers is what makes people want imports.
Some Americans are sad they gotta buy an import, but they can't afford to own and maintain a USA car that ends up costing as much as a Mercedes. For that cash, you're better off with a Mercedes.
@390merc65 AMEN! brake problems is a much smaller problem than a oil leakage which can be bad compression or oil rings or valve guides.... theres is no way that a vehicle can run without oil it will over heat and break within minutes. it look like he is one of those ppl that never do maintenance their car which EVERY CAR needs even if its a honda or bmw, and his brother does perform regular maintenance.

If you wanted a truck though or full sized SUV i would most likely recommend ford. Good trucks they do make. But for cars like the accord. You just can't go wrong with it. GM marketing division can open their fat mouths as much as they want about them thinking the malibu is better. IT Isn't. The accord has had many years of refining the car. and was one of the first to actually have independent front double wishbone, and multi-link rear suspension. Engines are still to this day bulletproof.

Either way if you are buying a so called "import" toyota or honda. You are still technically helping our economy. STOP! Why you might ask? Well truth be told. The car part contend in most of the toyotas and hondas these days are in fact mostly american. If you are considering a car I would highly suggest Honda. since they are a step ahead in build quality than toyota. My 99 accord has 140k miles. Absolutely no problems. You just change the oil when necessary and it runs and runs and runs.

you bad mouth the chevy truck you have..and in the same breath you priase toyota and say your brothers car is a 2001 and he runs it either low on oil or no oil at all?..wtf ??...if your brothers toyota is low on oil ...doesnt that say something to you ????HELLO???..WERE IS THE OIL GOING?...seem to me that your brothers toyota has a problem also ...so is it really a better vehicle?....well next time you are out of a job..or you are hungry...eat your import

All im saying is that it is frustrating. I love my silverado!!!if my truck were low on oil, you can bet it would seize.. they both have problems. even so, parts for imports are very expensive compared to American. the fact i take really good care of my truck and keep up on PM, and he beats his to shit. im replacing break lines, abs parts, fuel tanks and senders... 8 yrs old/65k miles. and he meed a new o2 sensor after 8 years/200k makes you wonder.

@scalp340 I dont understand how you are having that many problems... My chevys last me forever. My 98 tahoe has 150k on it and only thing changed is brakes etc... Well if you live where it snows and salt like i do, your going to be changing brake lines and stuff like that. Trannys and engine in a silverado last forever. Even your year, we have 3 of them at my work with just about 200k. one with 189, one with 178, and another with 167k.
Dont go to foriegn, thats stupid.

don't listen to 390merc65. It's normal for the engine use a quart a month with average driving. Fresh oil's thicker than old oil, clean and lubricates the engine.
During use, the heat dissolves its lubrication values and absorbs unburned gas/ air mix escaping through the piston rings and goes in the engine's lower half, where most of the oil is.
After a while, it gets so thin the heat burns off the oil. Drive it 5 months without adding oil or changes and u'll have little or no oil left.

BTW, you aren't the only one. I've heard female nurses at my hospital talk all about their husbands' Silverados breaking down twice a week, but their Camry or Corolla, which they bearly maintain (most of the time, their husbands do it when they're not fixing their trucks :) LOL), keeps on running without problems.

Besides, other GM truck owners had "piston slap" engine knock problems. Check em out online. The piston slap was caused by the pistons and rings not made to fit properly. People complained, GM said it was "normal" and "shove your truck up your ass" or "S.O.L.- fix it yourself."
The trucks were only a couple years old and now they have to scramble to keep finding replacement engines once a year or so.

BTW, IT IS FRUSTRATING to keep pride in your American vehicle because you love it, but you hate it because you either keep fixing it, only to have it keep breaking down or the repair didn't work and you'll have to fix it again.

haha, yea. i've been having constant abs misfires. so i took them out and cleaned them. put them back in and then had a yellow abs light and red brake light on in the dash. so i replaced both sensors. reset the "codes" lights went out. but now i still have a abs misfire every once in again when slowing to a complete stop. 9 years old, but 65k original miles and it might as well be disposable after 5 years regardless.

Man, after all the trouble you're getting with your truck, now I'm glad I don't buy a new American car. I drive a 96 dodge stratus. There's loads wrong with it or about it, but I've got NO WHERE NEAR the amount of problems you've had, especially with the ABS. I'm at 134,915 miles. It's cheap to run and drive, but definitely not a performance car.

Aside from people's personal preference in imports, overall resale value, dependability, quality, price, popularity with kids, practicality, versatility, import execs reinvesting in the company to hire more people & make better cars, & frustrated customers is what makes people want imports.
Some Americans are sad they gotta buy an import, but they can't afford to own and maintain a USA car that ends up costing as much as a Mercedes. For that cash, you're better off with a Mercedes.

@390merc65 AMEN! brake problems is a much smaller problem than a oil leakage which can be bad compression or oil rings or valve guides.... theres is no way that a vehicle can run without oil it will over heat and break within minutes. it look like he is one of those ppl that never do maintenance their car which EVERY CAR needs even if its a honda or bmw, and his brother does perform regular maintenance.
