Carey is the only player in history to average more than 3 goals and 20 possessions per game for an entire season. No one has yet come close to matching this. He also led the league in contested marks almost every season that he was captain at North and was one of the best tackling key position players in the game. There wasn't a single aspect of the game he wasn't great at... I know of no other player you can say that about.

if you look at all the great fowards over the years, ablett, dunstall, lockett, hudson, wade, they all won the coleman medal. The simple fact is carey played as a foward for his entire career and never kicked the most goals of any play in the league, keeping that fact in mind how can anyone claim that he is the best of all time

You can't judge who's the greatest player by who gets the most kicks, goals, marks etc (though there is no player in history who averaged both more goals and more possessions than Carey), because different positions are different. Greatest can only be judged on ability to influence a game. No player today or in the last 20 years is anywhere near Carey with respect to influence on a game's outcome. Carey influenced the outcome of games more and more often than anyone. Therefore - greatest

Brown has struggled to put in consecutive seasons where he is injury free. Brown has a long way to go.

I lot of people judge Ablett purely as a full-forward, which is stupid. In 14 seasons in the AFL, he only played 4 at Full-Forward. The rest were at Half-Forward or the Wing, where he averaged 3.5 goals a game (best average for non-key forward) before moving to full forward.
