Still using my 2005 G5 PowerMac; can't upgrade the OS past Leopard due to the PowerPC chip, but the thing still screams (2GHz processor, 2GB Ram, 250GB HDD). RIP Steve; thanks for all you did for us....
@oldkidsjonge OR he could just be a nice guy remembering a tech icon. But I understand, your life must be so bad that you have to be pessimistic about everything.
@brutusunix I agree with you, it is weird to think that macs and PCs have the hardware inside now... i might as well hack OSX on my HP, its why i just bought a G5^^ "The last "Real" Mac
@Titanz91 It's because Power 7 is server and raw power. Mac is now a gaget company period. They discontinued their server line. they got ran out of the market.
@aniketroxx remeber IBM did one for the wii? and look at the wii now its less powerful than the gamecube! if the wii did not come out during the beggening of the resesion it would be more powerful.
Yeah Apple computers are prenium. People that are looking to SPEND to get a GREAT computer buy them. Now I am not a huge fanboy, I have owned several Macs in the past like the Dual 2GHz g5 that I commented before. I even bought an iMac G5 about 5 months ago, really nice. My latest Mac purchase was a brand new Macbook Unibody with the 2.4 GHz and GT 230M graphics. Really nice notebook, kinda on the slowside because it has a lot of programs on it. But hey, Apple is nice!!
Lol...By that standard the processors in your radio are "better" than that in your computer. Yes, if you increase transistor counts without doing anything else heat and size will go up, but they've also shrank them down alot, a modern transistor in a processor is 32-45nm in size, and smaller size means less heat/wasted energy. And they can do alot more than just shrinking it, theres power gating, architecture improvements, etc.
I don't remember, it belonged to my university. I think it was the one with two processor modules and 8 cores per processor, so 64 threads in a single system since it has 4 way SMT, that's batshit insane.
Imagine if IBM hadn't sold out to Microsoft and kept the PC proprietary. Then the lucky PC bastards would sit with RISC machines and us Mac users would be stuck with 68k, or maybe 88k.
Apple didn't change because of speed. They changed because they wanted more application support developers can port things over to mac much easier when it is on a cisc processor.
yeah and they also used Macs to create many of the games and the operating system. To be honest its mainly the Mac haters what get annoyed about this, I have a video titled "even Microsoft use macs" and well it annoys the heck out of Mac haters, they try oh so hard to convince themselves, but they just cant lol
yeah they would have done anyway. The performance per watt for PowerPC was very poor, plug it was impossible for a G5 to go inside a laptop, because of its heat and power consumption
(sry for my english) a G5 for laptops to develop, would have been possible, but IBM did not have interests to develop a Notebook version. They wanted only CPU's for Desktops.
@DildoSurround umm no if that was true why would Apple have had PowerPC G4 chips in notebooks. Their were reasons Apple switched to intel, costs, compatibility, and performance per watt on intel is much lower
I love how advanced Apple was back then. I love the PowerMac G5 so much that I went out and bought a dual 2.0 ghz with 2 GB of memory and 6600 NVIDIA card in it for a meare bargain @ 400 $. I cant believe how great it is. I was thinking of buying a Mac Pro because i saved up, but this is good enough...and i mean good!
Impossible, even if they decide to make a G6 and it was better then all Intel chips, Apple wouldn't be going back, then they would have to drop Intel support and all... And then no Boot Camp...
apple moved to intel over revenue and running windows anyways. Think about it x86 at the time was more ten 90% of desktop market let's say apple, motorola, IBM had 10% and then Motorola and IBM have to sharer revenue from that tiny 10% and then apple :p
As you should know, Apple doesn't care what has the highest market share, thats why their products are so good. Just because something has a lot of market share dont mean its a good product. PC's have 90% of the desktop computing market, are they good? No. Until recently, Intel sucked. The new Core and Core 2 lines are better though, thats why Apple switched but now I'm getting worried again. Intel's starting their confusing naming scheme again (Core i7) which can mark the beginning of problems.
doesn't care about market share? that's a load of crap apple's a company like any other they want money and if not them Motorola and IBM would've been pissed at the lack of money coming in.
lol have you guys ever heard of IBM Power architecture? basically what the G3/G4/G5 was based on that IBM uses in server/super server products so IBM does actually have chips you could call a G6/G7 and yea the newer IBM chips did greatly improve power management
i own a Quad 2.5 GHz PowerMac G5 and I got it a few years back. let me tell you.. I have a new Nehalem 2.66 GHz Mac Pro, and when I compared both: The powermac g5 beat it by 2.8 seconds. Unbelievable for a computer that dates back to the mid 2000's!
I have a Powermac Dual G5 and a Macbook Pro 2,2 GHz. Smooth Cam Analysis in Final Cut goes much much much much much much faster on my Macbook than the G5.

I think I got a great deal! It includes Leopard too!!! And for $250! I think its a great deal for how much that was included with it!!!
$250 pretty good deal but to bad that machine gonna be worthless with any future Operating system except Linux same with the monitor with ADC Software tho great deal ^^
yeah, but ive never owned a mac before, so i thought that would be my opportunity. I have it now and it works great! i added in my own RAM to bring up the memory from 2 GB to 8 GB!! Way faster! And even when this doesn't support any new OS from apple, ill still keep it, but get a newer mac. I love them now.

Its crazy how fast processor technology advances. They boasted about 50 million transistors in this video, now we are into the billions.

@tipoomaster Using more transistors is not a good thing. It means larger chips using more power and producing more heat.
Maybe they were boasting about how few transistors there are.

Applelover950 1 year ago
IBM is a big failure themselves.
Failed in End-user market before
selling it to Chinaman's company
& nows call it Lenovo. Their Ideapad
range is just as ugly as ThinkPads.
PowerPC 750 in Xbox is the biggest
joke ever in computing/gaming history.
A processor supposed to generate more
money via company workstations becomes
nothing but a fun-box attached to a TV.

I kind of think that IBM wasn't really interested in Apple's systems to begin with. Big brother isn't interested in anyone but themselves.

very processor Apple uses then, which
jokingly just for a gaming console when
