  • thank you for this review, very informative :)

  • Superb review...Thank you very much !!

  • @gailgatti Thanks, much appreciate the comment.

  • Wrong they now have a movie mode on the d90

  • Nice review, thanks! Keep rocking my friend.

  • nice camera!!!! Gotta love Nikon!!!

  • I own one of these.. Great First DSLR.

    They take great pictures.

  • @matsui2001 true they definately do

  • @GMSamuelRhine They are also so easy to master, One of my all time favourite cameras the D40. It is a little gem.

  • @matsui2001 yup i still use it. its kinda a pain sometimes but its great if you can work it in full manual.

  • @GMSamuelRhine Which other cameras do you have other than a D40 can I ask please.

  • @matsui2001 sure. i also got a Canon Kiss 3 which is the same as a film rebel and i got a konica autoreflex T which is from the 60s i think. all SLRs though. what cams do you got?

  • love the review EXCELENT photographer.

  • @TheMangolatino Thanks for the comment.

  • my grandad likes photography like you xD and its now getting passed on to my dad to my bro and now me photography s great :}

  • @TheMrDomingo is the nikon d40 good for someone who knows NOTHING absolutely about photograph but wants to take good pictures... or you reccommend better the nikon l110*point and shoot*

  • nice video

  • Love your review!

  • I really enjoyed your video octogenerian! Thanks for teaching me a little about the world of slr photography.

  • I think the D40 is a much better camera but the A200 is still good i just like the D40 more

  • nice video, thanks.

  • hi great video, What do you think of the zoom on this camera with the kit lens which i believe is 55mm, and should i buy the 200mm lens?

  • yes u should

  • Well that all depends on what you want to shoot with it and what lens you're looking at. Nikon make a nice 70-300mm VR lens which works very well as an all-rounder. F-stio changes depending on how much zoom you use which changes the depth of field.

  • is this good for panning?

  • Comment removed

  • It must be great to get away from it all and fish in beautiful and serene surroundings.

  • does the resolution will make a probelm someday?

  • Resolution matters only when you want to make poster size prints. People with high resolution cameras will brag but you will have a Nikon SLR.

  • not the best thing in the world, especially with that ccd sensor

  • Interesting comment. I checked it out. One web side states CCD sensors are of higher quality and more pixels. While CMOS much less expensive and almost as good as CCD.

  • I read that they are mostly the same image wise, but cmos has better battery management, and faster speed

  • As they say in boxing: it's a draw.

  • very well then. keep making the good vids man.

  • Thanks this helped alot. I just got it a few days ago after watching your review

  • what a legend!

  • i juz gt my d40 2day! looking foward 2 taking gd pictures

  • Yes, the D40 does sepia.

  • In the playback mode you can see all pictures after they have been taken.

I'm checking to see wether the D40 does sepia.

  • Excuse me im still saving up money to buy this camera but pardon me can you see the effects of probably sepia through the viewfinder? Will it change?

  • lionthroupe: no you can not see effects through the viewfinder as it comes straight from the lens, you can see through through the lens when the camera is off

  • hmm should i get the nikon d40 with 18-55m non vr lens or the nikon d60 18-55mm vr lens which is 150 dollars mre then the d40.

  • The D40 is the best value for your money.

As you point out the D60 is more expensive. It has a few more features than the D40. Check the web site "Steve's Digicams" for a full review of both cameras with sample videos.

  • sorry :/

  • Thanks for your comments and support.

  • Hey u did a good job, i just turnt my volume up

  • great review! but hard 2 catch the words

  • you are awesome. this really is an excellent camera and it takes some very clear sharp photos :) great review sir!!!

  • Thank you, sir, for the video! I have a Nikon DSLR and I love it, especially the ergonomics!

You sound a lot like Christopher Walken, which would is perfect for teaching!

  • thanks so much for the review! very helpful! i wish i had a grandfather! ;(

  • Great review! I bought the camera yesterday and I'm loving it!

  • Correct, on the D40 and most older SLR's there is no live view. The latest models are beginning to arrive with live view.

  • I was thinking of buying the D40 , I'm using a Nikon 5200 point & shoot , i always shoot off the LCD not the eye lens , so this is not possible on the D40 ?

  • This is not possible on most of the DSLR's ... but you cant compare what you see in the LCD with what you see trough the lens with the eye.Very good camera. I'm buying mine this week.

  • excellent information Sir. But would like to share my experience with Olympus DSLR E 420, it actually show images prior to shoot on LCD ,same like point n shoot cameras. Your critique welcome.

  • good review, i'm thinking about getting this camera, and im surprised no other reviewer commented that you can't see the picture on the screen prior to actually taking the photo

  • Hi Again!

Is this camera hard to fit into the palm of you'e hands. Are all the other models?

    Thanx alot!

    (Aiden)

    xXx

  • you are relly good.eccelent reveiw i loved it!! :)

  • Thanks for the kind words and compliment.

  • you should teach . you have a soothing calming voice.

  • octogenerian: someone in their eighties.

great review! i also have the same camera and it's great!

  • This guy is like one of those old school types that was here before the digital age and had to do stuff manually-when the world didn't have a bunch of "wedding photographers" (weekend warriors) who thought that having an SLR and twisting the body to zoom means that you are a photographer.

    Thanks for the review.

  • <33

    I'm getting this camera now.

  • Thank you so much!

Your review really helped me achieve a better feedback on this dslr.

  • Thankyou so much

I really want one of these cameras

    im gonna get one :)

    Thanks again

    You've been a big help !! x

  • which is better Nikon d40 or Sony a200

I just relaxed and enjoyed the video.

info in a calm way..........wish you could be my narrator for everything that I ever bought.

  • your the man

    your video was helpful

this will help me get started with photography

    have a nice day :)

  • Thanks for the review. I own the Nikon D40x and the Nikon 18-200 VR lens. I love the combination. Can't go wrong!

  • the most relax review about the D40 LoL :)

    well done Sir

  • i wish my granda's are like him! well done sir!:-)

  • This has literally made my day. well done, sir.

  • Great!

  • It's really nice to see the older guys posting videos on youtube and understanding technology and photography

My grandma is 80 and she just sits around whining about everything all the time, not posting on youtube or taking photos

    Nice work!

  • Thank you for the review sir.

  • amasing 81year hi-tech loving old man:)

  • Sorry, my bad. It is really nice that this man interested in photography. Stupid joke, sorry.

  • what a rude thing to say. i loved your review and i'm considering buying the d40! thanks so much!

  • You better shut up loser. He is a damn good old man. And i am buying d40, too !!!

Please, sir ... don't get angry by those losers who are saying about you bad things. THEY are bad things. Go on !!!

  • Im not a loser, it is just your opinion, yea, hes a good man, i respect him too for interesting in cams, but i couldn't resist from posting that comment:)

  • ahhh blless him

  • It has been a pleasant surprise to garner so many hits. Old timers with a story to tell have always been somewhat popular.

  • Excellent and straight talking review - Thank you. GREAT camera; I echo that! This camera is becoming somewhat of a cult bit of kit.... and by the hit count of this video, the reviewer is becoming rather popular too!!!

  • This camera is £207 (including the £40 nikon cashback) at Amazon in the UK. Insane price for this decent bit of kit.

  • Cool guy :D

  • What a bloody legend! Bless him!

  • thanks for the review. Nice to share your knowledge.

  • "No LCD preview & no movie mode"

damn... i really don't know that... thanx octogenerian

  • sweetheart this is a SINGLE LENS REFLEX... not a compact!

  • i thought i can sell my point N shoot camera before buying D60 but now i have some good reasons to save my S3IS.

"No LCD preview & no movie mode"

but this will not stop me to get D60...:)

  • nice review i have that camera and its awasome

  • great review!

  • I want to thank the 16,000 YouTubers that have visited this video. You are all great!

  • MAn why you guys so mean. You guys are just haters.Leave him alone if he wants to post a video dont hate him on it.We have to start showing more respect to our elders, cause they had it alot worse back in the day.

  • Great review!

  • P&S /2nd. hand camera

  • Hello sir, I'm thinking about buying a new camera and I've been very into the new Nikon P80 but the reviews hasn't been mind-blowing so I now I'm getting very interested of this D40.. Do you have any experience of the P80?

    Best regards Robert

  • Hi Bobandersen: I have no experience with the P80. From what I read the P80 is an exciting 18x zoom, 10 mp, advanced camera. The 6 mp D40

is an exciting entry into the world of digital SLRs. Check prices. Compare sample photos. Zoomed, the P80 will require a tripod.

  • You are really great!

  • Nice review sir,

  • Hi i come from the u.k and how much wold this be in pound's? (£) and also would this camera be good with like day trip's and other stuff??

and also how many mega pixel's?

    (please reply!)

    Aiden!

    xxxxxx

    by the way nice word's!

  • Thanks for your email. Check out "Steve's Digicams" for all the info you need.

Note that there is an upgrade on the market, the D40X. The D40 is a 6 mp camera. The D40X is a 10 mp camera.

  • O.k thank you so much! but is that an slr? i am new on cameras!

  • Yes, it is an SLR (dSLR = digital single lens reflex).

  • Just ordered mine. Thanks for the review.

  • Thank you for the review, just ordered mine and should be shooting great pictures soon.

  • my deep respects...

  • Thanks for the kind comment.

  • Wow, my grandmother still insists on using a 35mm film camera.

    Adam

  • Yes Sir!

  • great review! thanks! :)

  • great vid man, love the camera

  • This man is a legend in his own right as probably YouTube's most senior member!

    Good review, thanks!

  • Wow, cudos to this octogenarian for actually interacting with youtube, and with modern day technology (d40). It might sound patronising, but all the elderly people i know, in particular my nan and grandad are so out of touch with this sort of stuff. Well done on a great review.

  • Thanks for the kind words.

  • That's the difference between a dslr and one of them pocket cameras.

Everything in a DSLR is made for taking better pictures. View through the lens, size and weight, sensor, more options & features etc.

It means it's quite large (d40 is actually small) and can't take videos. The pictures are 14754 times better tho.

  • Ok,ok, let it go...

  • the sony cybershots havea live preview....

  • The Cybershots are point and shoots, not digital slr's.

  • nic camera

  • Great video man! Keep up the good work.

  • Great review, keep up the good work.

  • Really important points. Thanks.

  • THANK YOU

  • you have humour, octogenerian. i`ll have a look at your other 58 videos.

  • Thanks for the great review.

  • wow..am surprized he can use a comuter j/k man

    good review

  • ???? WTF? do you not have any respect? did your mother fail in raising you??? learn some damn manors!!

  • Good review, I love this camera, so basic, so easy, such good quality.

My tip for making reviews is speak up a bit more, i had to turn down my tv's volume to listen, although after that, it was very clear and respect it, i hope you enjoy your camera.

  • im only 13 and everyone is asking me to do photoshoots for them heheh goo reveiw comment my video

  • I never use point and shoot. I take my D80 everywhere I go.

  • this is a rad cam but i reall want the d40x because its 10.2 mo and its something to grow on if i got this i wud want a better one in a year or so yay i got 500 pounds for my bday today and a got a drit bike mini but kinda fast

  • the mp has nothing to do with the picture quality.

    D40 > D40x.

  • How can you say the D40 is greater than the D40x? The D40x is everything the D40 is, plus more. I prefer the D80 ;).

  • Thanks for the great review!

  • Very interesting. You have made me convinced that Nikon D40 is truly a good d-SLR. Now I'm looking forward to buy the Nikon D40x. Very inspiring. Brilliant!

  • thank you so much for the review

you have helped me decide to buy the camera

    thank you

  • Well, although I can't figure out how to work the movie mode on mine (even though there is a movie mode button right in the list area) my aunt has the camera as well and has taken movies with it. They look pretty good, but it takes up a hell of a lot of memory on your stick.

Just letting you know that you probably can take a video with your camera. ;)

  • Thanks for the review.

I'm hoping to get that camera for Christmas.

    Keep up the good videos.

  • Am 27 and just got a D40! Glad to see that your still doing the things that make you happy! After all isn't that what life is about?

  • dude dont say that show some respect to him!

  • realy nice review sir it was realy intresting i learnd some new stuff :) getting my D40 in 5 days cant wait :P

  • You inspire me.

  • Hello Sir,

It was a very informative Video from you. I am very much thrilled about your interest in photography and camera. You will always be a inspiration to young ones.

    Thanks again

    Sunil

  • Thanks for the comment. Photography and computers keep my mind active.

  • There is an advantage to having no preview on the LCD screen. You can more accurately frame your shot, it doesn't hurt your eyes at night, You don't have to look at the screen in bright sunlight and not be able to see it. SLR's are good in many other ways.
