@matsui2001 sure. i also got a Canon Kiss 3 which is the same as a film rebel and i got a konica autoreflex T which is from the 60s i think. all SLRs though. what cams do you got?
@TheMrDomingo is the nikon d40 good for someone who knows NOTHING absolutely about photograph but wants to take good pictures... or you reccommend better the nikon l110*point and shoot*
Well that all depends on what you want to shoot with it and what lens you're looking at. Nikon make a nice 70-300mm VR lens which works very well as an all-rounder. F-stio changes depending on how much zoom you use which changes the depth of field.
Interesting comment. I checked it out. One web side states CCD sensors are of higher quality and more pixels. While CMOS much less expensive and almost as good as CCD.
lionthroupe: no you can not see effects through the viewfinder as it comes straight from the lens, you can see through through the lens when the camera is off
As you point out the D60 is more expensive. It has a few more features than the D40. Check the web site "Steve's Digicams" for a full review of both cameras with sample videos.
I was thinking of buying the D40 , I'm using a Nikon 5200 point & shoot , i always shoot off the LCD not the eye lens , so this is not possible on the D40 ?
This is not possible on most of the DSLR's ... but you cant compare what you see in the LCD with what you see trough the lens with the eye.Very good camera. I'm buying mine this week.
excellent information Sir. But would like to share my experience with Olympus DSLR E 420, it actually show images prior to shoot on LCD ,same like point n shoot cameras. Your critique welcome.
good review, i'm thinking about getting this camera, and im surprised no other reviewer commented that you can't see the picture on the screen prior to actually taking the photo
This guy is like one of those old school types that was here before the digital age and had to do stuff manually-when the world didn't have a bunch of "wedding photographers" (weekend warriors) who thought that having an SLR and twisting the body to zoom means that you are a photographer.

Hi Bobandersen: I have no experience with the P80. From what I read the P80 is an exciting 18x zoom, 10 mp, advanced camera. The 6 mp D40
is an exciting entry into the world of digital SLRs. Check prices. Compare sample photos. Zoomed, the P80 will require a tripod.

That's the difference between a dslr and one of them pocket cameras.
Everything in a DSLR is made for taking better pictures. View through the lens, size and weight, sensor, more options & features etc.
It means it's quite large (d40 is actually small) and can't take videos. The pictures are 14754 times better tho.
