I'm not a fan of Santorum, but in fairness to him, gaffs like this are inevitable from all candidates and don't really prove that they're ignorant. It's a slip of the tongue, like when Obama claimed he'd visited 57 states.

In neither case is that actually what they think, probably, but just a misspeak.

For some reason, we always ignore and excuse it when it's someone we like and when it's someone we don't like, we actually think they think that.

Africa is a very diverse continent, considerably larger than the USA, comprised of over 50 separate nations speaking several western languages as well as hundreds of tribal languages. No way to make that as a slip of the tongue. It can only be due to a lack of comprehension.

I'm obviously not saying that he was right that Africa is a country. You don't need to lecture me about its diversity. I'm not ignorant. I've been to Africa (and around the world) and speak 8-12 languages.

What I'm saying is, slips of the tongue are common to all people, regardless of education, and especially in highly stressful situations like debates. All candidates make them. I doubt he honestly thinks Africa is a country, so let's not be petty.

@Gyrkin59 As you know if you speak other languages, there is no one definition of fluency, but rather a range. 8 languages meet the strictest definition, 11 or 12 meet a looser definition. And I'm not trying to impress you, but rather asking you not to assume that the people you're talking to are ignorant or in need of a lecture.

I'm not at all a Santorum fan and it may indeed have been a Freudian slip. But Obama makes those mistakes and he's quite educated. We should all relax. :-)

I agree that it's a dumb mistake. But everyone, educated and non, liberal and conservative, you and me, make them under stress. We should attempt to be charitable and focus on issues, not isolated gaffs.

Perhaps it is a sign that we should be expending more of our financial resources on education with less focus on sending our military abroad to enforce the plunder of natural resources in the third world.
