Rossanna
I have a question, how old were Sampras and Agassi when they retired? I heard Federer in an interview saying that he wants to play long enough for his children to see him play, this would suggest Federer aims to retire at 35/36 years old approx?
@freesoulim WOW,that's harsh and nasty. Federer is a champion and a gentlemen. Was never a big fan of Andre but now have a lot of respect for the guy after learning about his introduction to tennis by his overbearing father who pushed him in to a sport he didn't really want to play. I'm keen to read his book 'Open' and learn more about him. He really was a terrific player who wore his heart on his sleeve. Ease up on Roger,2 different personalities, that's all.
@yossi341 No, Becker has respect for Andre, most of the pros do. They get to know each other and become friends to some degree. He was sincere with his clapping. Of course if someone didn't like Andre and was in that situation they may still clap, but Andre was pretty well liked and respected in the tennis community.
@federerfreak4 Do you play tennis? Do you compete? Have you watched pro tennis for years? It seems like you do not because of the remark you made. It is awesome what Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic are doing. Do you know how hard they are working? How well they move their feet? The amazing shots they regularly come up with? It is awesome. Check out the doubles sometime to, that is another game all together.
@rockerkid26 Agassi was special. His whole story from start to finish is interesting, inspirational, and successful. He deserved this ovation, and yes, you can see how much this means to the players. Without the fans these players would not be who they are, The players know how important and special it is to play in front of these people, and how they can be on your side or against you and make a difference in the outcome of a match. Tennis is not boring though, I see nothing boring about it.
@anthonygareth Yeah youre right in something. But in the part of tennis being boring, im not talking about boring matches or bad players. Im talking about the lack of different players; players with attitude, charisma like Agassi. Agassi wasnt a super genius like Federer, but he had something special. Sampras wasnt so charismatic, but his style of play was serve and volley, that was something awesome to watch. I think that tennis is actually boring because everybody plays the same tennis.
@totti440 I don't think the effect will be the same. Agassi had a connection with his fans that I don't think Federer shares. Not that Federer is a lesser player or less deserving, but Federer's stoic nature lends itself towards less of that fan connection; whereas Agassi shared emotion with all of his fans. Federer may be [and probably will be] celebrated as the most dominant player of all time, but Agassi will be remembered like you see in this video.
@majorthompson1 Federer may have a stoic nature on court to stay focused, but your mistaken if you think he doesn't show emotions or passion!lwatch the trophy presentation of AO 2009 when he lost but also the basel trophy presentation 2011 when he won!
Nadal and Djokovic show much more emotion on court but still it clearly seems that Federer got more fans than anybody else!
this shows that Andre is not only one of the best players ever, he is also a fantastic human being and extremely eluquent. Seen this many times - cry each time!
I am reading his autobiography, and LOVE it! I am not even a tennis fan, but in his autobiography titled Open....he is making a tennis fan out of me. In the book, he will tell you that he never wanted to be a tennis player...he thought he had a different calling. Well, I believe that his other calling may have been to be an author. This man can write! I am a well read, woman...and this autobiography is writen like poetry. It is THAT beautiful!!
I am german but i really wished a better player than (benjamin) becker had ended his career, at leat the other german tennis player named becker if u know him ;)

My past five minutes went like this: Thought about being Agassi for halloween, google video search, watched this, cried, bought an awesome wig to be 80's Agassi for halloween.
Back in the day the crowd and public for tennis players played a very important role in giving the player support for his/her heart and Agassi knew this and loved everyone who associated themselves with him from what i see BUT NOWADAYS things are different, people are more synical and the media plays a bigger role, this demotivates players and crowds become unpredictable and less caring so therefore the FAMILY now plays a huge role for a tennis player to succeed.

Just take a bow, stop your crying, and stop pretending like you're the center of the universe. Honestly, these ego-maniac tennis players think they're the center of the world, and it's tiring. Crying in front of national TV because you're retiring from TENNIS? Oh my, how will the world go on? Give me a break. Just get off the court and write your book and let's be done with it. I hope Fed doesn't pull this shit when he retires.
@jazzguitar2010 Something's wrong with you and stop your jealousy. He cried because he's finally leaving the sport that he loves so much and I'm sure he can feel the love from so many people who gave him that standing ovation. It's indeed an emotional time for him as he's one of the most influential tennis players ever. Can you say that Federer is an ego-maniac as he cried because he lost a TENNIS match to rafa nadal in the final?
@jazzguitar2010 you're a retard you know? its obivously very emotional for him as he's been playing tennis for 21 years. He has the right to cry. He isnt pretending to be the centre of the universe. He is a greater person than you will ever be so just shut the fk up.
@jazzguitar2010 Oh shut up! You mean Federer as in the one who won Wimbledon and had to be a diva and do a wardrobe change? Andre was a professional who wanted to give the fans all he could but his body (his back) would not let him.
At this moment, he was the center of the universe.
@jazzguitar2010 .....hey asswipe, since you obviously have absolutely no redeeming human characteristics, why don't you just do us all a favor and stick your gigantic head (which is way too big for your tiny mind) back deep into your cavernous ass where it belongs. I'M SERIOUSLY HOPING THAT YOU AREN'T MISSED BY ANYONE WHEN YOU LEAVE THIS MORTAL COIL. FUCKING ASSWIPE.
@jazzguitar2010 Are you seriously that shallow? I mean, good god man he loved the sport and they gave him a standing ovation to honour him, do you seriously think he's just going to fuck off without thanking them? Besides, he was pro since the 80s mate, at least 21 years, bottom line, he's showing he cared for the sport and you're shallow enough to say 'Give me a break?' Know what, don't answer, if I haven't proved my point, someone else here has.
@Chazfazzer That Pete has no sense of humour and Andre does? I agree. Although it is pretty hard to pretend to know someone from one little spat. If only it was that easy, I would think everyone I have ever met was a piece of crap in that case.
Andre looked about to cry before the guy hit the last serve, he probably wouldnt have won even if it wasn't an ace, but this was an emotional time for him.
@sillybeeee to so many people tennis have became a passion thanks to this Man.Some of them have already won Slam or too. This is not over dramatizing its just pure sadnes, thats my opinion and i think maybe few others.Andre introduced some new things to this game, made it more interesting and fun, even that for him self it was not always so.Ok, you now what?I am dramatizing and i dont care.He was He is, and He will always be a legend.Respect.
Since André retired I lost interest in tennis. He was the last of a great generation that started with Becker. Not to disrespect the ones before or after. Sampras, Courier, Stich, Ivanisevic, Edberg and many more great players. Baseliners vs volleyers. I miss all that!
Although I was a Sampras fan during the height of their career's I've nothing but respect for Andre, he played with passion and these fans obviously recognize the end of something special. The roar of the crowd continually escalates too that was aweome, as choked up as he was I think all tennis fans felt the same sense of sadness and appreciation at this moment.
i just finished reading his book, which lets you understand his thoughs, joys and struggles in a whole new way and makes this moment even more special... - made me cry
I have never seen anything like this. Tennis has never seen anything like Andre Agassi. He is a tennis hero and the most decent and caring human being too.
@annajeehee Sorry, but I don't agree. Andre went through a lot of physical pain his last few years, that was the primary reason he had to retire. He couldn't do those cortisone injections in the back forever.
I read his book and watched this... all I can say is wow! what a champion~in tennis, in life, in everything!!!! Agassi has always been a hero, but now he's more then that.
I remember watching this with my dad before I became a real fan of tennis, and now that I'm watching it again, it still brings up the emotion and moves me even more, to tears. bless you, Andre.
i was there, sitting behind the lady in the hat in the first 10 seconds of the video.. it was amazing. i wish i would have known what i was watching though like i know now
I just finished reading his autobiography "Open", it's hands-down the best sports auto-/biography I've ever read. (As a writer and bookseller, that's saying a lot).
OMG!!! So sad such a great player retires! very humble! that is y i tink i luv federer too.......i dont know wat i will feel wen roger decides to retire!.....Oh God i dread it.....
It's a shame I didn't start following tennis seriously until about 2004. I feel like I really missed out on a lot of legends through their great runs. Yet even when I watched this, I almost cried. For however short it was, he was my favorite player before Federer. I don't even want to begin to imagine what's gonna happen when Fed retires.
Yeah, well the things that he said in his book don't add up. Anderson Cooper did a very good job of exposing the nonsense that Agassi professed. It didn't add up because it was a lot of invented BS so that he could sell books. After all, who wants to hear that Agassi worked hard and succeeded? They want drama! Agassi is smart enough to realize it.
@bobbycratchit maybe he is honored by the many fans cheering on him, showing him respect and affection, still backing him after all these years, adoring him and supporting him ...

If you close your eyes and listen, it sounds like never-ending applause.. hope he never forgets that moment.

I love Steffi with all my heart but why does it always look like she's applauding without any feeling?
Second thing: 23 dislikes means there are 23 dickheads who understand nothing about tennis.

I have learned to appreciate Agassi after I read his book, now he's my hero
henrikjanssonjansson 7 months ago
I have never seen anything like this. Tennis has never seen anything like Andre Agassi. He is a tennis hero and the most decent and caring human being too.
wildmanglas 7 months ago
He retired too soon - guess it was his wife's and family decision- to see his kids grow up
annajeehee 7 months ago
@annajeehee Sorry, but I don't agree. Andre went through a lot of physical pain his last few years, that was the primary reason he had to retire. He couldn't do those cortisone injections in the back forever.
CPORet2009 7 months ago
I read his book and watched this... all I can say is wow! what a champion~in tennis, in life, in everything!!!! Agassi has always been a hero, but now he's more then that.

I remember watching this with my dad before I became a real fan of tennis, and now that I'm watching it again, it still brings up the emotion and moves me even more, to tears. bless you, Andre.

I just finished reading his autobiography "Open", it's hands-down the best sports auto-/biography I've ever read. (As a writer and bookseller, that's saying a lot).

OMG!!! So sad such a great player retires! very humble! that is y i tink i luv federer too.......i dont know wat i will feel wen roger decides to retire!.....Oh God i dread it.....
hammanyero 7 months ago
It's a shame I didn't start following tennis seriously until about 2004. I feel like I really missed out on a lot of legends through their great runs. Yet even when I watched this, I almost cried. For however short it was, he was my favorite player before Federer. I don't even want to begin to imagine what's gonna happen when Fed retires.

@WalidBeck
Agassi is smart enough to realize it.
bobbycratchit 8 months ago
If he hates tennis why is he crying? He hates tennis according to his book!!!
bobbycratchit 8 months ago
@bobbycratchit maybe he is honored by the many fans cheering on him, showing him respect and affection, still backing him after all these years, adoring him and supporting him ...
