Habib takes some unique approaches to playing the guitar. He tunes his instrument to the pentatonic scale and plays on open strings as one would on a kamale n'goni (a traditional Malian instrument).
Pentatonic scales are very common and are found all over the world, including Celtic folk music, West African music, African-American spirituals, Jazz, American blues music and rock music, Sami joik singing, Northwest Greece and the music of Southern Albania, the tuning of the Ethiopian krar and the Indonesian gamelan, Philippine Kulintang, Japan, China, India, the Andean music, the Afro-Caribbean tradition.
Yeah well wether its good music or not depends on the person listening.
And yes its made for sale in the rich parts of the world so ofc. it is mastered to so we like it ,however if you listen closely then there is a meassage berried in the essence of the music., which will wearry depending on the litserner. sorry for the miss spellings ;D
labelling his music doesn't make it any better. actually, labels are only a way for people to see art as a bunch of stereotypes, ignoring the multiple influences and creativity of the author.
Yes really, and that was just one example. How do you explain the violin? The guitar? Yes there are traditional African elements, such as the pentatonic scale and a swingy feel - but the meter is European. The tonality, the instrumentation, the harmony, the time signature are all European.
This is good music, but its made to sound exotic without making westerners feel out of their element - Hence, it's very "Western" (European influenced).
The African elements are genuine, of course, and it's not mass produced crap music, but it's still pop music in that its neither traditional (folk) nor classical (elite).
This is a good example of what happens when a true artist takes advantage of our limitless modern influences to create something genuine and beautiful from the soul.
I love music from Mali. Also Salif Keita, Mory Kanté, Ali Farka Touré and others. Mali music mixes well with blues. It makes the blues sound sweeter. Google these names and find out.
Hi from Canada's East Coast. What beautiful music! I teach in a middle school of mixed race students, and I look forward to sharing this music with my students. Read "The Book of Negroes", and feel something about what it is to be African.
im not from mali...and i just recently discovered the beautiful music from mali..and i think its the most beautiful music in the world hands down...i love to travel and for sure mali is going to be my next destination
Hey, genius, Mali is an African nation that is predominantly Muslim (Sunni). So yeah unless he was in the religious minority, he would have a Muslim name.
Hey , I m from Mali and there is no such thing as a muslim name. you mean Arabic name instead. In my country and christians live in harmony .Your name can be Kobe bryant and still be muslim in Mali. We do have some christian Muhameds too.
After reading the story roots i have so much more appreciation for this kind of stuff

Hah, ok. I said that because I like this traditional music - better than all the pop crap on the radio :)
filitalian 2 years ago
Actually, this is far from traditional.
example: Traditional African music usually has a droning bassline and doesnt change keys like his music does.
Point: This is pop music.

In any case, it's good music.
