This pilot was done for $50,000, a princely sum for 1940. The anthropomorphic vulture is a bit of cartoon silliness conspicuously absent for the other films, a number of which dealt with more serious threats like Nazis, Japanese sabateurs, gangsters, natural disasters, and occasionally supernatural menaces like giant monsters, undead mummies, and aliens.
I have a few of these cartoons, never seen this one though. Very cool. The animation and music for these are top notch. Cracks me up that they still portrayed villans as they did in those old weasterns. The sinister antagonist dressed with a tophat, cape, cane, and mustache would tie the damsel in distress to the railroad tracks.
Everyone should know that if there is a mad scientist threatening to destroy a city, he lives in a creepy observatory at the top of a ridiculously tall mountain overlooking the city.
Thanks for posting this, i really enjoyed it, i liked this cartoon when i was a kid, I loved the kind of real animation movement they had, superman looked more human. not like a semigod i liked that, thanks.

To those that couldn't hear:
It starts off with the narrator saying "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF".
And then it cuts to earth, and we hear the narrator saying "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF"

Ahhh, now that's what I call motion picture.
Not like those half assed cartoons from nowadays in which character don't move any muscle.

Definitely flying. Some of the earliest Fleischer stuff it's a bit unclear if Supes is flying, or just jumping a lot more than tall buildings.

the old super man can beat up the new superman because the new one gets beat up easily but the old one doesn't.
benir11 3 years ago
so how come instead of pushing the beam back he didn't just get out of its way and rush to its source?
diddymuck 3 years ago
Because it would've destroyed the building and more before he was able to reach its source.

This episode was actually based on Nikola Tesla's supposed death ray.
BenHutchinson1 3 years ago
Tesla would've done it right and destroyed Edison with the first strike instead of targeting some random bridge.

You just can't do better than the artists who created this without modern day computers.
Keep posting old school animation like this and thanks for doing so.

If superman could fly why would he have to leap buildings in a single bound?
LTfootball92 4 years ago
He can do both.
MonsterMashKiller 4 years ago
In the old school comics he couldn't fly just jump, until this cartoon where it was easier to make him fly and it went from there

Wow, Lois gets her own plane? Lucky.
It's silly as hell, but this old show has some suprisingly good animation.

Yes it looks silly now, but back than with the technology they had it would be amazing. I bet in a couple of years Smallville will look pretty silly.
