Just wanted to say good luck to everyone involved, I think the ad is great and we had loads of fun making it regardless of what the outcome is. Just for the record, 'the girls' weren't hired - we all wanted to be part of this creation because we thought it was a fantastimical idea!!! I think everyone worked so hard and it all looks and sounds wicked! I defy anyone who says they don't like the track! Please vote for Instant Party, it's the best! (",)
Don't know where the abuse is coming from, this one is great!
As for Elliot what kind of argument is "who buy's big bag's of Doritos." haha! Apart from the fact i eat them all the time, you're not going to get the message across with a tiddly little one, in a big format advert like this one!
ok maybe i wrote a bit too much abuse here, i liked the lift guy gets his cheese on, and a lot of effort went into this so i will give it credit for the quality and such, but its still my least favourite. Thats my opinion.
elliot thats rich comin from you the guy that used the most cliched technique of all, bad dubbing. this ad was well made and sebby quality filmmaking can be done for pennies if you have the hunger which these guys do.
I don't know if this should be a finalist i have seen a lot of good ads in this competition but its better than the rating its been given due to all the begrudgers.
i just want to make it clear, this has no relevance to doritos, and how often do you have the big bags of doritos? surely someone bust see this video the sme way i do? it probably will win, but democracy is flawed, even though its the best weve got. I just hope this doesnt win, i dont want to see another advertwhich has a little tiny drop of imagination and overflows with "look at my good sound and audio quality, its so professional". In my opinion. Does nobody feel the same??
The DoritosGoodDeedFairy thinks you have done an incredible job in creating your advert for the Doritos competition!! Ignore the fake and anonymous profiles posting nasty comments on entries - you are better than that - may these toads forever eat inferior corn snacks! Be proud, stand together!
nice execution, you guys obviously know what you're doing. It's a shame the concept is a bit old hat, think they'll be looking for something a bit fresher
i think this is one of the worst, cliched adverts so far. It blatently lacks originality and is typical of the kind of s**t that actually ends up on brittish tellivision anyway. >:(
i dont have a video, but youre very welcome to read my honest opinion on the videos. I love Doritos - just eat them, and id prefer it over this any day, and i have a lot of reasons for it
sebby40, we didn't actually "hire" anyone. Everyone was working out of good will for free!
Our total budget for this was around £200, the vast majority of which was spent on materials for our camera dolly which my brother and I built from scratch in the shed at the bottom of our garden in 4 days (and was finished at 4am in the morning on the first day of shooting)...
I work in film and have been browsing these entries. Just wanted to congratulate you guys on a great job! Great shooting, editing and grading! It is certainly in tune with other adverts seen on TV. Great foley work as well.
I'm voting for this advert, very original and I like how you have not made the point of an "instant party" in an obvious way! Very well done and original! Fun to watch.
good sound mix - well done for that. especially with the IRs. read ur comments about how the foley sounds needed to be very loud to compare to other ads.... so altho i thought it sounded too loud 9especially the footsteps), ur probably right.
pretty standard advert tho, nowt interesting at all really. i like the plasticene bird being sick best. it's hilarious.
I love this ad, definitely the best I've seen! great idea, smooth editing and perfect grade. also great dolly work! would fit perfectly into prime-time tv advertising!

You will find the making of as a video response to this video (above)!
Also youtube seem to apply an extra compressor/limiter stage to all videos upon encode. So in fact, it sounds that much more pushed when you view it on here :(
During the music you can hear the vocals pumping quite a bit at 2 points (when viewed on youtube), if you listen to my original dub, they're not pumpy!
Foley ranged from going on location to record the actual lift used on shoot, to clanking bits of metal together in the studio to make the noise of the bag buckle dropping back down.
Throw it all in a dubbing mix with some nice impulse response reverbs to get the acoustics right and soon enough (several weeks later) the ad was finished. I payed particular attention to how well the sound downmixes to mono and how good it sounds across a range of systems from the studio monitors to our crappy TV!
We tested it by recording a bunch of ads off the telly then splicing ours in the middle and watching it. Adverts are _really_ loud and the first time round ours was too quiet in comparison.
We want everyone to appreciate the lovely crunchy sound of eating Doritos.
Actually the dancers were dancing to "Dreamer [Original Club Mix] by Livin' Joy" on shoot. It has a tempo of 128bpm and I just used that as my starting point for the music.
Once I'd got the groove together I called up Sophia (The Golden Number) for some vocal inspiration and she came to my studio and did her thing!
Yeah, I mean - Will spent pretty much a full week coming up with the funky backing track (they actually danced to 'Saturday Night') so it's all royalty free. Then another two days recording the foley (crunch, footsteps, lift ambience etc.)
Simple, everyone worked their asses off and got paid in wine/beer/sandwiches and of course the dozens of bags of Doritos used for filming. I think we used 10 bags for the 'open bag in lift' scene alone!
We did this all on a measly budget of £250 including building a DIY dolly (in 3 days) for £150 and buying a lighting rig (from ScrewFix) for £40. We had great fun brainstorming, filming, editing, grading, composing and mixing this advert, and could not have pulled if off without the tremendous work from all the cast and crew members!!!
gummerbaby - I'm not sure it's fair to criticize us on originality grounds. There are no other ads (that I've seen) with the idea of a lift transformation or with dancers for that matter.
Of course we brainstormed and filmed the idea well before submissions were open, so we couldn't have copied anyone; in fact many of our other 100 or so brainstormed ideas for the advert were much more similar to entries now submitted on the site!
This was such fun to make, but pretty tiring because it went from concept to wrap in ~10 days. My input was mostly making the dolly and track from scratch in about 4 days... and nights.
Then we were on set for two days. I was doing lighting - consisting of 4 bargain floodlights from Screwfix. For the exit shot I was holding the (heavy) lights above the actors to get the light right for 12 takes I think. Man, my arms were tired!
It really was a great team effort. Well done everyone!
Oh, and we managed to _really_ confuse some random people who called the lift after we'd rigged it with a flashing mirrorball, disco lights run off my mum's car battery and everything.
