No fly-by is ever worth losing a career over. I was at this game and it was the loudest thing I have ever heard in my 23 years on this earth. Friends of mine were in the porta-john and they told me that they honestly hit their knees and started praying because they thought someone was bombing Atlanta. Crazy loud fly by.. Thought they were going to hit the Metal tower on top of that one building after they went across the stadium!
No doubt that it was very cool-- though probably only marginally cooler than if they had stuck to the rules. Also no doubt that these guys disobeyed orders, lost their wings, and wasted about 4 million taxpayer dollars in training. Not cool.
You know everyone in those stands wanted to see exactly that. Those guys delivered. Just like they were delivering ordinance. BTW, with Obama's ROE, they have to be that close to make sure they don't drop a bomb on the "wrong" terrorist. They have to see the color of the towel on the head. SO these guys are merely showing us Americans what they are getting paid to do. Naval Aviators are the best!!
@SickTwistedFrq Dude, have you been in theater? Gen McChristal wanted that ROE. Obama had nothing to do with it. And it's to prevent civilian casualties. And really, when you think of it do we really need to use a 1000 lb JDAM to kill a terrorist? CAS has its place but it needs to be used wisely. We need the help of the Afghan people to win this war. They won't help us if we occasionally kill civilians.
Their straight and level low pass over the stadium looked very unsafe--it was as if they could barely handle flying as close to the edge of the envelope as they were. If only they had been 800 ft higher, then everyone below them on the ground would have been safe had any of their critical systems failed during the flyover. (Please tell me you could read into the sarcasm).
Thanks for posting. Saw the other view from the left stands from you, saw you folks right in line with the flight and hoped someone had also captured it. Our Pilots who risk life and death, especially after 911 deserve more respect and admiration. If they goofed, have them wash the deck, lose their wings, NO WAY. Go Navy Pilots and all the other service men and women who keep us safe from the Al Quida MOFO's!
They flew low, violating the rules and endangering innocent lives in honor of GT's cut blocking and chop blocking.
While I appreciate their service to our country, I'm disappointed that these guys wasted millions of taxpayer dollars in training, risked lives, and risked millions of dollars in hardware, just to be cool. That's a selfish, junior-high attitude by officers who are supposed to follow orders on and off the battlefield. Bummer.
@mckenzielex11 hell yes a sense of humor !!!! On behalf of all G-Tech alum, football season ticket holders let me just say DAMN am i glad C.J. Spiller graduated !!!! catch ya in "Purgatory Valley "
@mckenzielex11: I didn't say that they should be grounded, just that they acted with wreckless, juvenile selfishness by disobeying orders. Millions of dollars in training and two piloting careers wasted. Not worth it.
Unfortunately, the Navy brass is very unforgiving when it comes to unsafe flight. It is usually a one strike deal. The next time these guys will fly will be when they say "This is the Captain speaking" from the cockpit of a Boeing 737 or other civil aircraft. Sad but true.
For those of you complaining about the permanent grounding of the pilots involved. What would you have been saying if they would have had an engine failure, hydraulics problem, etc. during their approach or departure runs? And don't say " wouldn't happen" or such because you don't know when it's going to happen Bird strikes, mechanical failures can happen anywhere or time. As checking common sense, they're the ones who need that checked, not the one who pulled their wings.
The Navy permanently reassigned Lt. Cmdr. Fryman and Condon to non-flying jobs, after this !!! Can you believe it? They lost their wings. They should get their wings back & Navy official who striped their wings need common sense IQ checked, and their head out of their ass.
@mycooltube2000 The navy has rules for a reason. I'm sure your attitude would be completely different had they had a mishap and killed several hundred in the stadium that day. They don't screw around and give slaps on the wrist in the military when you break the rules like in the civilian world. Don't push your civilian ideals upon them for defending this country the same way they have for over 200 years now.
It really sucks that these pilots were permanently grounded. It's clear they were in complete control of their aircraft and we not showboating or acting irresponsibly.
Yes they were. They should have done their flyby at 1000ft not 200ft. What if on the approach to the stadium they hit a flock of birds and did not have the altitude to safely maneuver the aircraft away from the stadium and killed thousand of football fans? Lets reference the US Marine pilot that was flying 700ft lower and 100kts faster than the rules allowed and killed 21 people when he hit a gondola wire in Italy. Rules are there for a reason.
I was at that game but had no idea they were coming couldn't see them before they cleared the north stands. Scared the crap outta me, but it was still cool as hell.
these pilots got grounded permanently for this!! Stupid idiot tech grads. Maybe they forgot how many tall buildings are in downtown? I agree 100% with the navy's decision.
@TCFATL but I would forgive them if they had strafed the place
Got your Pee Pee whacked and your not even in Blower, Jeez!! If your gonna get sat down, how about 480 KIAS with full blow.

withchza you went to a agriculture school and you bragging ? ha-ha maybe you can get a traitor to pull a double wide over you school , with the low academic standard you have i know the air force was the only place you could go .....oh go talk your shit on a gator blog enjoy your gymnastics Peace
@MrCerealkiller40 , "maybe you can get a traitor to pull a double wide over you school"
A guy who can't spell is criticizing a college grad? Boy, does your mama let you on the computer after 9pm? Get in the bed, you have a quiz in spelling tomorrow. Maybe if you study harder you'll get out of the sixth grade!
withchza hey you little bitch did you get my new post ? were you even born on this soil. your the reason I opposed Clinton's "don't ask ...don't tell"
withchza- You sound like some communist putz, or left wing liberal that would love to create more rules & laws than anyone could possibly keep up with. Nice fly-over. I was there as well. Let them keep flying
I think it was awesome....nothing better than seeing our military planes flying low and close after the National Anthem. Sort of like an exclamation point and an "in your face" to others. Wish we had more of'em....and thank you to the service people who fly these planes for us!
I have seen a dozen flyovers in my life and I don't believe I've seen more than 1 that was following the 1000 foot clearance above the ground (or tallest nearby building). The reality is all pilots go below the 1K ft floor but these two pilots may have pushed it too far.
These pilots were in no danger to themselves or the city of Atlanta. They can land on an aircraft carrier in stormy weather but supposedly were at risk by flying maybe 100 feet above an immobile building on a clear day?
And another thing, why would I give a job to some idiot hotshot who can't follow the rules when there are probably 100 guys waiting in line who will be happy to follow the rules and fly just as well? Navy doesn't care about your fun, those planes are for killing. Being fun to fly and watch flying overhead is just an unintended benefit. :)
Man I hope I don't ever live my life in fear like you .FLY NAVY . Like you have that authority anyway . Call your Mom she will make you feel import . Once again FLY NAVY .
MrCerealkiller40, I read the AJC also and rules are there for a reason. You're flying a $35M high performance jet and getting PAID for it! What more fun is there!?! You want to barnstorm, get your own darn plane and fly it!
helmet0628, Maverick would have been grounded in the REAL navy and would never have made it to top gun. It was a movie!
And just to let you know, I was in the Air Force. Follow the rules or fly a desk! Especially in public!!
I thought that was service envy coming out .& I didn't pay 4 IT ?ITS WHINING LITTLE GIRLS LIKE YOU THAT MAKE ME SICK ! oh yeah please accept my apology for the turtle comment . the poster b/4 you was watching turtles have sex. i thought it was you . You don't need to tell me about Top-gun , Please Forgive me for you Pansie a@@ liberal post pissing me off !!! BTW Goooo NAVY . I look forward to embarrassing you guys in football again .
i hope they reinstate these pilots, i was their and it was great .and to the communist who keeps defending the navy ,go pick you nose and eat a booger we read the AJC Let me guess you live in your moms basement in a bubble &love soccer!! and yes I'm TALKING TO YOU withchza
If you've already been in the air for awhile, all systems are go, visibility is severe-clear, you have about 3000 hours in type, and your headed in a fixed direction at a suitable fixed speed, the chances of your interrupting a football fan's beer guzzling by crashing into his face are fairly remote.
I agree it's too bad we're all so locked into being a Nanny Society that we've lost some verve along the way.
My own guess is that the two pilots will, in fact, be reinstated to flying duty.
Department of the Navy safety regulations regarding the operation of jet aircraft in a fly-over of a stadium filled with >40,000 people is somehow commentary on the "Nanny Society?"
@ls1z28chris Wrong. These planes are inherently unstable at low speed - should an engine fail at that altitude, the plane becomes a bomb over 40,000 spectators, or a crowded 10-lane interstate, or some other place in the congested intown area of a large city. In San Diego a year or so ago, an F18 flamed out and because of the poor decision of the pilot, ended up in someone's house, where it killed a woman and her mother and daughter. The 1000-foot rule protects both the pilot and audience.
It is all good, man. That San Diego thing was a tragedy. No one wants to keep that sort of thing in mind. They just want to get their dick hard (we called it "an authentic Marine Corps hardon") watching planes fly by.
Of course it makes perfect sense in this zero defects and no tolerance mentality society that has gripped this country. Let's waste the millions of dollars it took to train these two aviators and kick'em to the curb...f'ing brilliant. What is more disturbing are the posters here who agree with it...just signs of our country being taken over by the weak and scared who want to take any fun out of life. Losers!
Have you ever been to a Tech game? There's nobody in the upper deck of Bobby Dodd so there's no danger. Last year they roped off the end of their own bench so they could get a sell-out.
Have you ever been to a UGA game? The campus afterwards looks like a cross between a landfill and a flea market. Not to mention the gallons of drool that need to be mopped from the stadium.
You guys mad at the navy would be thinking differently if they clipped a skyscraper and crashed in the middle of downtown ATL. Somebody didn't do their flight checks or they would have set their instruments correctly. Question is, did they do it on purpose to try to get away with flying low? "Oops, sorry I forgot to set my altimeter, my bad!"
Admiral didn't fall for it, probably an old fighter jock himself.
Should have known, a navy boy! UGA grad, enjoyed kicking your old coach's butt last season! Be thankful you guys get to play weak teams like the AFA and not real teams. The only good the low flying did was wake up the few fans in the stands. If you're going to get grounded at least flyover something cool, like Sanford Stadium. GO DAWGS, GATA!!!
The board concluded the pilots chose to use barometric altitude measurements (feet above sea level) instead of radar altitude measurements (feet above ground level) but failed to adjust their warning systems accordingly, the newspaper reported. By the time the alarm sounded, it was too late to correct the mistake.
FYI: Atlanta is between 700 - 1000 ft above sea level. They obviously ignored warnings, no wonder they were grounded!
You guys are right... this is TOTAL BS...! This whole country being controlled by the insanity of the PC AIR HEAD... SO CALLED "LEADERS"...! COME ON....!!!!!!! Please PEOPLE... GET A LIFE...! Permanently grounded...? You gotta be kidding!
@dhurstman I agree! Considering all the fans at the game paid for the 2 jets and the training of the pilots with tax dollars, the jets should be allowed to fly as low as the taxpaying owners want it to. I spent many years in the Air Force and finally got out because their policies are embarassingly disgraceful!
This is not TOPGUN this is real life. The DOD doesn't care whether you think this is cool or bad ass. They have regulations and you will follow them or get your ass grounded! Those rules are there for a reason. These guys should have known better than to do something so stupid. You don't fly low in freakin' public! You wanna fly low you go out somewhere remote. Admirals don't really care as long as you don't do it in public where EVERYONE can see it!!
@withchza do you realize that the last place anyone needs to fly low is in remote areas...were birds get sucked into engines (which is one of the main reasons for having the deck set at 1000 ft.)
yeah, I know that, but people were commenting that it is okay to fly as low as they want and they didn't understand why an Admiral would be enforcing the rules. Just read some of the comments, these people have no idea how strict the military really is.
Back in the day guys would meet way out some where to do the crazy stuff. I was just commenting how stupid it is to do something like this in public. It may look cooll, but definitely not worth being grounded!
The Navy's response was pathetic and a travesty. We saw this stuff daily in Hampton Roads and could not get enough! How better to remind all the world "WE are Here!"? I miss every day not living where I can witness a flyover that isn't part of an airshow (be glad they are there, Virginia Beach: sans they and the base you would be just one more low-end tourist destination!).
It's absolute horseshit that either of them should have gotten permanently grounded. Slap on the wrist, 30 days cool-off, buy 'em a beer for a good show would have been more like it. This is the new, kinder-gentler, pussified, politically correct Navy officer corps we have today. That Admiral is more concerned about his career (CYA) than he is being a Leader. He's a perfumed prince manager-executive and a disgrace to Navy tradition. There was nothing dangerous or reckless about this low pass.
@YankeeAirPirate WOW YOU'RE AN IDIOT. What if they hit a bird and lost an engine (certainly low enough) ? How about the fact that both of those things cost $60 million a piece. And that that the building just beyond the stadium has a tower that goes 240 feet of the ground (Their altitude over ground was 200 ft). And that they KNEW how low they were allowed to go and they went lower anyway. If you're attitude puts showmanship in front of safety, then you have NO business in the cockpit.

@YankeeAirPirate its common regulation to fly at least at no lower then 1000 feet breaking regulations can put not just the pilot and possibly his crew member danger but also civillians in a crowd. flying that low leaves room for so many errors.
@chobitsjunky -- What is common military protocol exercised by true LEADERS, not the chickenshit ADMINISTRATORS so dominant in the Field and General grade officer corps nowadays, would be to slap those two skilled pilots, who taxpayers have spent millions to train, with a good wrist thrashing, NOT killing aviation careers. That's overt political CYA and it stinks. If busting a hard deck -- with no harm done -- is a career-ender, expect to see nothing but pussies as fighter pilots in the future.
Yes it is, my son in law is a F-18 pilot and his orders were changed as a result of these two sadly losing there wings... Navy has no humor in this...
There's a bunch of videos of this flyover on this site. This one is the best of them all in my opinion. Quite possibly the worst seat to see the game, turns out to be the best seat for the flyover. Definately top 5 flover video of all time! Bravo!
Wow...I feel like we were the only ones in BDS that didn't know this was coming!?! Did they publish it in the Technique or something? You obviously knew right where you needed to be, the top of Sec 217 or 218 maybe? GREAT JOB!
I hope they have another for the UGAG game. What'd you shoot it with, if you don't mind me asking? I've got a Sony HD camcorder, but I don't think they allow them in BDS. My dig camera shoots awful video...Yours is AWESOME!!
Just for everyone's info, according to the online Tech Football Fan Guide, video cameras are prohibited in BDS (which doesn't make much sense with still cameras able to shoot HD video nowadays?!?).
Also, there is another flyover scheduled for the UGAG game on Nov 28th...Woo-hoo!
I was sitting in the student section next to Wake band, I had no idea it was coming, it was bad ass. They were so dang low though, awesome job! Place was going crazy for a good 10 mins after that!

And the fly boys are grounded now
SLVDLT 1 year ago
You know everyone in those stands wanted to see exactly that. Those guys delivered. Just like they were delivering ordinance. BTW, with Obama's ROE, they have to be that close to make sure they don't drop a bomb on the "wrong" terrorist. They have to see the color of the towel on the head. SO these guys are merely showing us Americans what they are getting paid to do. Naval Aviators are the best!!
SickTwistedFrq 1 year ago
@SickTwistedFrq Dude, have you been in theater? Gen McChristal wanted that ROE. Obama had nothing to do with it. And it's to prevent civilian casualties. And really, when you think of it do we really need to use a 1000 lb JDAM to kill a terrorist? CAS has its place but it needs to be used wisely. We need the help of the Afghan people to win this war. They won't help us if we occasionally kill civilians.
ryank289 1 year ago
Their straight and level low pass over the stadium looked very unsafe--it was as if they could barely handle flying as close to the edge of the envelope as they were. If only they had been 800 ft higher, then everyone below them on the ground would have been safe had any of their critical systems failed during the flyover. (Please tell me you could read into the sarcasm).

gt and wake forest both suck go gators! cool ass fly-by though.

OHIOGreene 1 year ago
They flew low, violating the rules and endangering innocent lives in honor of GT's cut blocking and chop blocking.
While I appreciate their service to our country, I'm disappointed that these guys wasted millions of taxpayer dollars in training, risked lives, and risked millions of dollars in hardware, just to be cool. That's a selfish, junior-high attitude by officers who are supposed to follow orders on and off the battlefield. Bummer.

As checking common sense, they're the ones who need that checked, not the one who pulled their wings.
twp3 1 year ago
The Navy permanently reassigned Lt. Cmdr. Fryman and Condon to non-flying jobs, after this !!! Can you believe it? They lost their wings. They should get their wings back & Navy official who striped their wings need common sense IQ checked, and their head out of their ass.
mycooltube2000 1 year ago
@mycooltube2000 The navy has rules for a reason. I'm sure your attitude would be completely different had they had a mishap and killed several hundred in the stadium that day. They don't screw around and give slaps on the wrist in the military when you break the rules like in the civilian world. Don't push your civilian ideals upon them for defending this country the same way they have for over 200 years now.
jkutyna 1 year ago
It really sucks that these pilots were permanently grounded. It's clear they were in complete control of their aircraft and we not showboating or acting irresponsibly.
warrenjrose 1 year ago
Yes they were. They should have done their flyby at 1000ft not 200ft. What if on the approach to the stadium they hit a flock of birds and did not have the altitude to safely maneuver the aircraft away from the stadium and killed thousand of football fans? Lets reference the US Marine pilot that was flying 700ft lower and 100kts faster than the rules allowed and killed 21 people when he hit a gondola wire in Italy. Rules are there for a reason.
They WERE showboating and the WERE irresponsible.

If you've already been in the air for awhile, all systems are go, visibility is severe-clear, you have about 3000 hours in type, and your headed in a fixed direction at a suitable fixed speed, the chances of your interrupting a football fan's beer guzzling by crashing into his face are fairly remote.
I agree it's too bad we're all so locked into being a Nanny Society that we've lost some verve along the way.
My own guess is that the two pilots will, in fact, be reinstated to flying duty.
Stignatz 1 year ago 2
@Stignatz
Department of the Navy safety regulations regarding the operation of jet aircraft in a fly-over of a stadium filled with >40,000 people is somehow commentary on the "Nanny Society?"
Fuck, where is my tin foil hat?
ls1z28chris 1 year ago
@ls1z28chris Wrong. These planes are inherently unstable at low speed - should an engine fail at that altitude, the plane becomes a bomb over 40,000 spectators, or a crowded 10-lane interstate, or some other place in the congested intown area of a large city. In San Diego a year or so ago, an F18 flamed out and because of the poor decision of the pilot, ended up in someone's house, where it killed a woman and her mother and daughter. The 1000-foot rule protects both the pilot and audience.

Losers!

The Navy has bull-sh it policy's and are very strict. The Navy will cut off it's nose to spite it's face.
kaygeeone2 1 year ago
Look at this from the Navy's report:
The board concluded the pilots chose to use barometric altitude measurements (feet above sea level) instead of radar altitude measurements (feet above ground level) but failed to adjust their warning systems accordingly, the newspaper reported. By the time the alarm sounded, it was too late to correct the mistake.
FYI: Atlanta is between 700 - 1000 ft above sea level. They obviously ignored warnings, no wonder they were grounded!

dhurstman 1 year ago 2
@dhurstman I agree! Considering all the fans at the game paid for the 2 jets and the training of the pilots with tax dollars, the jets should be allowed to fly as low as the taxpaying owners want it to. I spent many years in the Air Force and finally got out because their policies are embarassingly disgraceful!
Tampaslice 1 year ago
This is not TOPGUN this is real life. The DOD doesn't care whether you think this is cool or bad ass. They have regulations and you will follow them or get your ass grounded! Those rules are there for a reason. These guys should have known better than to do something so stupid. You don't fly low in freakin' public! You wanna fly low you go out somewhere remote. Admirals don't really care as long as you don't do it in public where EVERYONE can see it!!
withchza 1 year ago
@withchza do you realize that the last place anyone needs to fly low is in remote areas...were birds get sucked into engines (which is one of the main reasons for having the deck set at 1000 ft.)
kingbiggysmalls 1 year ago
@kingbiggysmalls ,
yeah, I know that, but people were commenting that it is okay to fly as low as they want and they didn't understand why an Admiral would be enforcing the rules. Just read some of the comments, these people have no idea how strict the military really is.
Back in the day guys would meet way out some where to do the crazy stuff. I was just commenting how stupid it is to do something like this in public. It may look cooll, but definitely not worth being grounded!
withchza 1 year ago
The Navy's response was pathetic and a travesty. We saw this stuff daily in Hampton Roads and could not get enough! How better to remind all the world "WE are Here!"? I miss every day not living where I can witness a flyover that isn't part of an airshow (be glad they are there, Virginia Beach: sans they and the base you would be just one more low-end tourist destination!).
fiddysumpthin 1 year ago
It's absolute horseshit that either of them should have gotten permanently grounded. Slap on the wrist, 30 days cool-off, buy 'em a beer for a good show would have been more like it. This is the new, kinder-gentler, pussified, politically correct Navy officer corps we have today. That Admiral is more concerned about his career (CYA) than he is being a Leader. He's a perfumed prince manager-executive and a disgrace to Navy tradition. There was nothing dangerous or reckless about this low pass.
YankeeAirPirate 1 year ago 15
@YankeeAirPirate WOW YOU'RE AN IDIOT. What if they hit a bird and lost an engine (certainly low enough) ? How about the fact that both of those things cost $60 million a piece. And that that the building just beyond the stadium has a tower that goes 240 feet of the ground (Their altitude over ground was 200 ft). And that they KNEW how low they were allowed to go and they went lower anyway. If you're attitude puts showmanship in front of safety, then you have NO business in the cockpit.

@YankeeAirPirate its common regulation to fly at least at no lower then 1000 feet breaking regulations can put not just the pilot and possibly his crew member danger but also civillians in a crowd. flying that low leaves room for so many errors.
chobitsjunky 1 year ago
@chobitsjunky -- What is common military protocol exercised by true LEADERS, not the chickenshit ADMINISTRATORS so dominant in the Field and General grade officer corps nowadays, would be to slap those two skilled pilots, who taxpayers have spent millions to train, with a good wrist thrashing, NOT killing aviation careers. That's overt political CYA and it stinks. If busting a hard deck -- with no harm done -- is a career-ender, expect to see nothing but pussies as fighter pilots in the future.
