Why cant countries just own themselves and other countries just let them be who they want to be? I am from the United States my boyfriend is Chilean and we were in Chile and felt the earthquake. It was a devastating situation for them, and to this day they are still feeing aftershocks.

Chiles population below poverty line is 18.2% the USA is of 12% (no so far off huh) Our unemployment rate is of 10% the USA is of 9.4% (yeah lost there for you to brag about) As of 2008 Chile had a surplus of 20Billion meanwhile the USA has a public DEBT of 39.7% and an external DEBT of $13.45 TRILLION. @porchnapp Im sorry but do you know what a 8.8 or 9.2 earthquake feels like and what that does to buildings? Until you do, I'm not sure you should have anything to say about being prepared, things will fall when an earthquake is that strong.
Plus, Chile is one of the few countries in the world that will have a tsunami immediately after an earthquake, the tsunami was also what caused a big part of the damage and deaths. But how do you prepare for a Tsunami?

To the rest of you - First, wishing hurricans/earthquakes/tornados/tsunamis upon other countries is not the way to go never wish that upon someone its a terrible thing to have to live through.Second, we do have a lot of poverty in our country, its not something we're proud of but theres always citizens working on it trying to make a difference. It makes me frustrated to sit here and read all these people fighting over money, whos got the best things and who owns who when hundreds of people lost their lives in this earthquake. Why cant countries just own themselves and other countries just let them be who they want to be? I am from the United States my boyfriend is Chilean and we were in Chile and felt the earthquake. It was a devastating situation for them, and to this day they are still feeing aftershocks.

Speaking of resorts, i simply loved the old Colonia Dignidad as a nice little retreat. Kind of a little private nook. Underground guest houses with plenty-o chilean copper wiring for electricity. Well, all-in-all, i think the chile people will look back on the little earthquake as a fun time. Chile really got put on the map because of the earthquake that killed less people than Pinochet did. For example, i asked 10 random people to say a few words about Chile, and 2 of them talked of the quake, but the rest of them spoke about how they like their Chilli extra spicy and hot and mostly with a beer-ice cold!!
