I have to admit I felt some satisfaction watching the abusing police officer get a taste of his own medicine, but I found myself being disturbed at myself for having that feeling. I don't believe that solving the problem of police brutality is vengeance. I would hope that as a human race we could find it in ourselves to rise over ourselves and in the name of peace and good will towards others that we could have simply restrained the officers and ended the violence.

The player probably saw it and decided that it needed to stop. I'm not saying that how the mob reacted was good, but the player didn't incite the crowd, so he didn't plan it. At the very least the officers involved learned to be a bit more humble and hold back on that kind of action unless actually needed.

Yes, law enforcement does have the right to inflict pain, this is not country specific.
As I responded to another guy, it's not until you have to subdue a raging big guy, that you realise how essential it is to exert pain in order to get them to cooperate.
Of cource, it is something you try to avoid when possible.

@P4INKiller: Basic point of law: an ordinary citien has the right to use reasonable force, a police office has the right to use necessary force. Subtle distinction. Neither situation covers four guys in full body armour subduing someone, restraining him THEN beating the hell out of him. If you can somehow make a case that this bloke was still dangerous with four cops sitting on him, then you have a case for their use of further violence. Otherwise, those cops committed a criminal offence.
