I almost forgot, to find the right hand position, i set my right hand on my right knee. Then i make a fist. Then i bring it up really quickly and hit my forehead, then swing it down and slap the strings all in one smooth motion. This puts my fingers just where they should be, ya gotta watch it though, if u miss, you will have a much bigger sound hole. To get my guitar in the right position, i hold it parallel to the ground above my head, and drop it. It lands on my legs in perfect position.
Great tip!! I used to grab my guitar like segovia, but now that you tought me how to grab it like a gorilla, i wont fall off my guitar anymore while im playing!! Oh and heres another tip for you, to warm up i always grab my guitar by the strings and swing it around my head in circles. The gets my shoulders, back, arms, wrists and hands all loosened up and warmed up, as well as takes the stretch out pf new strings so they wont go out of tune while im playing.
I don't understand. Why are you teaching basic hand positions, yet calling this an Asturias tutorial? Surely, people learning such a piece would be quite advanced
@tommyk77 This piece is given to his students their first year. The song itself isn't hard to pick up, I think the hardest part is utilizing your hands appropriately to play the speed necessary for the piece.
This video is a riot !! I laughed so hard that I couldn't think straight. There is no way that I am going to "gorilla grip" my jose ramirez guitar. This guy needs to climb trees for a living, not play guitar
can u imagine b4 a concert looking all suave, professional and then doing the gorrila grip and suddenly grabbing the guitar as if its a tree branch LOL
horrible, horrible advice - please don't ever teach guitar. Not only does this position give you a WEAKER grip, it will also give you tendonitis and permanently injure you. For god sakes, don't give out advice when you have no fucking clue what you're talking about.
This is really bad advice, especially for a beginner. I tried this thinking it would help stretch my forearm and improve my fretting, but ended up seeing a chiropractor for tendentious between my elbow and wrist—fretting of a different sort.
I agree, but on the other hand, a beginner shouldn't even consider learning this piece. It's best to start out with something easier and less strenuous as to get used to your fingers stretching.
All of you who post bad comments are jorks!!!!!! Looking deep into it this is really helpfull.....Thanks for the video Gorilla Grip!! It was helpful....
I thought this was very helpful. Maybe some of you more accomplished guitarists think this is stupid, but for beginners like myself this is helpful to get the right hand position. I listened to Sr. Segovia play this and im just stoked. I might spend the next 10 years trying to play it like him, to no avail, haha
This is the worst teaching advice I've seen for this piece. Most people grip too tightly...so this not good advice.
His right hand tone sounds terrible. And his left hand first finger should be in the middle of the fret not touching it.
Look at Segovia and Parkening.
You can actually play a lot of the tune with no thumb touching the back of the neck...a much better way to show that you need very little pressure...not a Gorilla grip.
thanks for the observation, I realize I should clarify. The gorrilla grip is something Sharon Isbin showed me that involves just learning how to prepare to hold the neck of the guitar. You are correct, one should not grip the neck tightly, like a gorrila;)
I meant to imply that the gorrilla grip should give you the initial position of the hand, which should end up with the knuckles in a curved shape, and then you should release the pressure on the neck after figuring out your position. then you can start to perform the pieces.
You are definitely a moron. Can't you understand some basic lesson. You think Segovia is gonna come n teach u? Learn to appreciate n criticize. If you have to do it nicely.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm sure I play it better than you ever will. And when you write the word you like "U", you sound like a 12 year old teenager from India and no one...especially me is going to take "U" seriously. So, fuck off Sanjay, um-kay? Go feed the cow.
Thanks for the tip. But the hard part of Asturius begins just where he stops. It is the multiple transitions from one bar chord to another at hi-speed that is the great challenge with this piece. I recommend using a metronome at slow speed, then gradually speeding it up to make the transitions without losing a beat or part of a beat. Its awesome if you can do it, and a lot of strength is required inthe left hand. Recommend doing grips with the left hand to develop the strength.

This video is weird. It presents as a beginner demonstration but is actually prep for intricate work.
I needed absolute beginner advice, had no idea what Asturias is.
Looking up, "beginner", and "how to hold a guitar," I found this demo, tried the gorilla grip and am consequently suffering a lot.
Would I or could I play this piece? Not yet, anyway.
Here I am 4 months after finding this bad advice with an appointment to see a hand specialist at a hospital to deal with a screwed up tendon.

That's tendonitis.
