Never has Richard looked more of a "bully". All them muscles intimidated sweet Karen, who's beautiful voice cryed out to us. Sadly we did not here her in time.

I agree my dad loathes RC,always saying how the group is actually called Karen Carpenter. He notes RC lack of success since her passing as the ultimate proof. I agree with Phil Ramone said that some of the label big wigs liked the album when they heard it in NY but once back in LA in front of the bigger wigs they dissed it. RC loved that! RC just couldn't face not being the only one to produce her voice. I agree too that after 1975 RC's production style wasn't the right fit for her anymore!
the bottom line is that this was not an affectionate family. I mean my family wasn't either but compared to Agnes&Harold,Richard we were the Brady's. I saw an old pic where Richard had his arm wrapped around the mom and Karen was standing by Harold. Harold didn't even put his arm around his daughter. Didn't her brother see THAT!!!?????? He and her parents kept pushing and pushing to be successful. I guess so....till this day; "We've Only Just Begun" is still the number 1 First Wedding Dance.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I wish, but they were contemporary music.
There are several reasons why they are likely not in the Hall Of Fame. Visiting Nixon didn't help. I'm much more of a Karen than a Richard fan as, from what I've gathered through various writings on them, are most people. But you can't put one in and not the other. It's a "dirty old shame" that Karen didn't get a chance at a solo career. If anybody belongs in the Hall of Anything, it's Karen Carpenter.
@yusoupoff I'll choose to take a page from the Karen Carpenter Book Of Class and not use worse language to respond to you. If you could read past a grade two level, you'd have noticed that I listed it only as a possibility. Did you read the whole post or is that too hard for you? There are many reasons why they're not in. Want to discuss them or do you prefer to trade insults? You won't beat me if that's your game.

@improvguru Karen did get a chance at a solo career. She put out a solo album without Richard and it was so much of a flop compared to their team efforts that the record company refused to release it.Some of the songs came out after her death only after Richard re-arranged and reproduced and edited them.Karen was the greatest singer who ever lived but without Richard's guidance they never would have sold more records than anyone else in the 70's,the greatest decade for rock and pop music forever.
@rematpac I'm sorry, but I disagree. Karen just as driven as Richard was when she began her music career, and she won the top music award upon high school graduation. She was far more talented than Richard was, and she was always the draw. She would have had a superb career on her own (everybody wanted her to guest on their albums). Her solo album was fine, better than Carpenters albums of that time and later. it was her attempt to be free, and the "boys" weren't about to let that happen.

@improvguru You obviosly don't know how many of The Carpenter's immortal songs, and there is a limited number, that Richard either wrote himself for her or picked a song among the finest writers of the time and arranged for her because he wanted the very best to create The Carpenter's"magic".You also don't know that Karen did have a struggling, failing solo carreer in the 60's before Richard and she denied recording any of the many songs she did her entire life. Finally available ,no magic there.
@rematpac Karen was 16 and 17 on her early career. She certainly did not fail. Have you listened to the songs? Her voice and drumming are unbelievable. Pick up a copy of "Little Girl Blue." It's very clear that Karen was Richard's equal at an early age. Yes, she has denied her Magic Lamp sessions, to appease Richard and carry on the myth that he was God and the only reason for her success. He wasn't even allowed in the studio where the recordings took place.

@improvguru It's obvious we are both extreme Carpenter fans and I enjoy argueing with you hoping I might learn something I didn't know.As far as I can tell ,some of your facts seem to be slightly out of order. For one thing,.Little Girl Blue was recorded when Karen was 32 just before she died.I've seen the video, she looks almost like a skeleton. .Many artists have sung this standard, the best version I'd ever heard was Linda Ronstadt's until I heard Richard arrange it giving a whole new fresh feel
@rematpac "Little Girl Blue" is the biography of Karen written by Randy Schmidt, not the song. In it, we discover that Karen was NOT independent as much as we think. She was raised to believe that she was Richard's back up and that he was God. Karen's solo album was fine until Richard got his hands on it. It wasn't about him; it was hers. We learn that he called her album "s**t". After 1975, in my opinion, Richard did not make Karen sound better.

@improvguru Ithink you're right and I think the reason was the qualudes ,which are some of the most powerful sleeping pills ever made(now they're totally banned from being manufactured)had to have been turning Richard into a zombie. But there were some good songs coming from somewhere and Karen wasn't trained in orchestration or arranging past a 4 part harmony.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@improvguru Yes I agree. For a 16 year old girl her voice was amazing and drumming par excellent, but a far cry from songs like Ticket to Ride,A Song for You ,etc. When Karen sang a song she usually sang it straight perfect. But every once in a while she would get caught up in the moment and through in a few notes ad lib that were so astonishly beautiful that it left me with the impression that she knew nothing but the best in music. But at the same time she sang songs like Reason to Believe the same
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@improvguru Idon't know where you get this conspiratorial(and I am a believer in most of the major "conspiracies") view on The Carpenters but for every shread of evidence you have to convince you of it,I can prove and explain the real facts.Karen's songs on her solo album, the only ones you know about, were reproduced in the album Lovelines where Richard edited, rearranged, and rewrote the accompaniment to try to bring the songs up to Carpenter standards. Some did, others hopelessly shallow and fluff.
@rematpac Richard did NOT bring Karen's songs up to Carpenters standards. Her solo album is far superior to "Made In America," "A Kind Of Hush," and "Lovelines." besides, the album was about her breaking free of Richard's clutches and doing her own thing for once more than it was about the music. Read "Little Girl Blue" for details on how Richard and A & M decided that they would not like the album. Richard was afraid of Karen leaving him. He wrote Karen's early "failed" songs, as well.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@improvguru If your version of things is right and I'm wrong I would really like to know. But like I said before Lovelines WAS Karen's solo album redone by Richard.Listen to one of their songs and ignore Karen's voice and consentrate on all the orchestration, instumental solos, key changes, electric piano, etc. that is constantly going on behind Karen's vocals. It is staggering how much most people probably only hear at a subliminal level. That's all Richard making the best voice sound even better.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@improvguru Karen was a percussion specialist with perfect pitch of course as well as Richard(so do I not that it matters).Karen had little knowledge of music theory or arranging, that was Richard's specialty and he devoted it all to Karen's voice, always staying out of the spotlight.NO ONE could tell Karen what to do.She was extremely independent, the prime example being that not a person on the planet could do anything to stop her from killing herself and it wasn't something quick,it took months!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@improvguru They're later albums suffered probably because of Richard's continued qualude addiction.Rather than albums with maybe 2 weak songs, they now had usually 2 strong songs. But even in their occasional strong songs their style was maturing in some ways.Songs like Happy,When you Got what it Takes,Prime Time Love,I Just Fall in Love Again are some examples. If she wanted to be free, nothing would have stopped her from making that choice. She realized her best option was working with Richard.
@rematpac Karen couldn't break free of her family's clutches. It's complicated, I know, but she didn't have it in her. She wouldn't even do her album without Richard's blessing, and it took six months of begging before he finally gave her permission. She wanted to cancel her wedding when she found out her fiancee lied to her but her mother wouldn't let her. Her best option was actually to stop working altogether and try to get well, but we know she didn't do that.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@improvguru What did her fiancee lie to her about?I think Karen's early success had something to do with her never being able to fall in love.I heard that she accused everyone who wanted to go out with her just because she was famous. That kind of paranoia would make it impossible to become close to anyone.I saw a video yesterday that was taped on TV of her singing in 1978, ,but she already looked like she was on the brink of death.Somebody raved Abba had a much better singer than Karen?Go figure
@rematpac Her husband told her a lot of lies, but the biggie was that he told her that he had had a vasectomy. He knew that Karen wanted children more than anything and he had months to tell her. Karen received no support from Richard, by the way. All he's done is pay Karen's husband to keep his mouth shut about the marriage.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@improvguru There's a lot that doesn't make sense here:why she would marry such a mis-matched guy who none of her family even liked when half the world worshipped her?
@rematpac Karen was very heart sick at this point in her life, due mainly to her brother trashing her solo album. She was also admitting her problem and seeking treatment. I think she saw this as a last ditch attempt to save herself. She was beautiful again at around the time of her wedding, but went downhill for good after a few months.
@improvguru A couple of weeks ago, someone called Karen an ugly crow on her Thank You For the Music video on youtube done on The Tonight Show with John Davidson in 1978 it says. They also claimed that she was a drumfish whose voice or looks were neither angelic, but that Abba's were. Can you believe it?This wasn't Karen's best performance by far and she was looking very thin. But I checked out Abba's performance of the same song that they were comparing her with and they sounded like country bumpkins
@rematpac REALLY? wow!! did someone say that nasty crap about Karen? shame on them, shame indeed what a beautiful women and person she was, there are some very nasty individuals on this youtube!! well shame on them!
Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, could touch Karen Carpenters Voice. She and Richard made one of the Greatest Musical Groups ever to record Music. Her Voice was a rare gift. When she sang, her haunting angelic golden voice, just pierces straight through you. Karen sang with absolute innocence, from her heart, and from such depth.!!
I will be forever grateful to have grown up listening to the Carpenters, since 1970. Karen Carpenter will forever be a part of my life. Rest in Peace Karen.
@GeorgeVreelandHill it's not music anymore george it's entertainment...there are no musicians out there today that are relevant...sad as it is. the weirder you can make yourself look, or show up naked some place. you are then given a mic and made into a star...
Beautiful song. I thought I recognized the location of the video. It's Huntington Library. I used to catch frogs under that red bridge at the Japanese Gardens.
from what i've read Richard wasn't so much confident that this song will top the hit chart but then it did... This is really great :) Carpenters forever :)
@john61ish You need help! , in my country (UK) this is called slander and is again,st the law .Richard Carpenter could sue you for millions and take everything you have (if you have anything that is) .Not only are you happy with slagging off a person who has past away you seem to get pleasure from doing it to the living too , why don,t you go on to channels you like? .
wtf do you think you talking about. You know nothing. If you dont like it then go listen to some crap music instead of this and just stop making a fool of yourself.
I watch this two or three times a month; what a beautiful voice, Karen always brings me back to how beautiful life really is...God Bless this Angel of Eternity!
@DocMEDICK She sisn't know. She just wanted to look better and lost control. She didn't want to die, according to their official biography. She wanted to get better.
She was starting to get very sick at around this time but you sure wouldn't know it to hear her. One of her best performances, and that's saying a lot.
Fantastic, one of Richars bext songs. I always loved the songs where they both sang. That was the Carpenters sound to me. A great a singer as Karen was you can't beat that blend of Carpenter vocal harmoney
Ive been into music allmy life and can headbang to nirvana and smooch along with the Beach Boys with equal impunity. I never ever heard anyone criticizing the voice of Karen Carpenter, its so sweet and so lush as to be above normalmoans, and also its easy to overlook the part Richard played in the overall sound--all the oooohs and ahhhs heavy with overproduction and adding to the lush sound were his doing---this is maybe my favourite Carpenters song--for taday
Hmm?...I think the male with shorter-hair and a penis must be Richard and the female with the longer hair and a vagina must be Karen....ya think??? You're either fucking stupid or sarcastic.....or both.
@CLARENCE1958 how can you be so sure that the one with the short hair has a penis and the long hair with vagina? have you seen them naked? unless thats proven it will always remain an assumption
Well, even if it were the other way around, I know for a fact that Richard has the short hair, and Karen has the longer hair, and I can see we're both hungry for attention here!!...I guess you have a point though!!.. I think you would be a lot of fun to talk to in person!! (hehehe!)
@CLARENCE1958 sorry bout that but im only being brutally objective here coz there are males with long hair and girls with short ones. so unless theres real proof at hand we can never tell.
how can a no nonsense philosophical question make me a dumbass, cunthead?? how can you be o sure that karen indeed had a vagina and richard a penis?? have youever seen them both naked??
I was lucky enough to see The Carpenters live in London back in the 70's. have ALWAYS been a huge fan. Never been a better vocalist the Karen.....such a tragic loss to music.
This is a great song! What happen to love songs like this. Karen had such a wonderful voice. This songs makes me sing it even when i'm not in the mood to sing. All their songs are great. There will never go away ! Just like my sons passing away in Sept. 20, 2008. My sons love will never go away and his memory. We all miss you John, only yesterday you was here with us. tears, tears.....
...Richard claimed that he and John Bettis wanted to write a song to 'appeal to the average dollar holder' or something to that effect. As it turns out, they created one of the finest pieces of pop music in history. Everything about this song is perfect. To everyone, check out the album version clocking in at 4:10. I swear that if the longer version had been released as a single it would have not stopped at #4 but would have gone all the way to #1.
Hi earcandy2008. I tried clicking on your link 4:10, but nothing happens. Can you suggest another way for me to get to that video? I would LOVE to hear the longer version!
Ive said it once and Ill say it again. THIS song is the best written and sung song in the world. some of these so called new groups should learn from the carpenters
The team of Richard Carpenter and John Bettis wrote this song which frames Karen's vocal tallents so well. They capitalized on the brilliance of Karen's lower vocal register at the start of this song which was to be the last top 10 hit for the Carpenters -- this song is one of their best
My Faverite Carpenter song! Karen was music's shooting star, for a brief moment we witnessed her amazing vocal talent... she passed into the horizon way too soon!

Xmas songs, I Love.

She put out a solo album without Richard and it was so much of a flop compared to their team efforts that the record company refused to release it.Some of the songs came out after her death only after Richard re-arranged and reproduced and edited them.Karen was the greatest singer who ever lived but without Richard's guidance they never would have sold more records than anyone else in the 70's,the greatest decade for rock and pop music forever.
rematpac 1 year ago

Finally available ,no magic there.
rematpac 1 year ago

For one thing,.Little Girl Blue was recorded when Karen was 32 just before she died.I've seen the video, she looks almost like a skeleton. .Many artists have sung this standard, the best version I'd ever heard was Linda Ronstadt's until I heard Richard arrange it giving a whole new fresh feel
rematpac 1 year ago

Some did, others hopelessly shallow and fluff.
rematpac 1 year ago
@rematpac Richard did NOT bring Karen's songs up to Carpenters standards. Her solo album is far superior to "Made In America," "A Kind Of Hush," and "Lovelines." besides, the album was about her breaking free of Richard's clutches and doing her own thing for once more than it was about the music. Read "Little Girl Blue" for details on how Richard and A & M decided that they would not like the album. Richard was afraid of Karen leaving him. He wrote Karen's early "failed" songs, as well.

@improvguru Karen was a percussion specialist with perfect pitch of course as well as Richard(so do I not that it matters).Karen had little knowledge of music theory or arranging, that was Richard's specialty and he devoted it all to Karen's voice, always staying out of the spotlight.NO ONE could tell Karen what to do.She was extremely independent, the prime example being that not a person on the planet could do anything to stop her from killing herself and it wasn't something quick,it took months!
rematpac 1 year ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
@improvguru They're later albums suffered probably because of Richard's continued qualude addiction.Rather than albums with maybe 2 weak songs, they now had usually 2 strong songs. But even in their occasional strong songs their style was maturing in some ways.Songs like Happy,When you Got what it Takes,Prime Time Love,I Just Fall in Love Again are some examples. If she wanted to be free, nothing would have stopped her from making that choice. She realized her best option was working with Richard.
rematpac 1 year ago
@rematpac Karen couldn't break free of her family's clutches. It's complicated, I know, but she didn't have it in her. She wouldn't even do her album without Richard's blessing, and it took six months of begging before he finally gave her permission. She wanted to cancel her wedding when she found out her fiancee lied to her but her mother wouldn't let her. Her best option was actually to stop working altogether and try to get well, but we know she didn't do that.

@improvguru What did her fiancee lie to her about?I think Karen's early success had something to do with her never being able to fall in love.I heard that she accused everyone who wanted to go out with her just because she was famous. That kind of paranoia would make it impossible to become close to anyone.I saw a video yesterday that was taped on TV of her singing in 1978, ,but she already looked like she was on the brink of death.Somebody raved Abba had a much better singer than Karen?Go figure
rematpac 1 year ago
@rematpac Her husband told her a lot of lies, but the biggie was that he told her that he had had a vasectomy. He knew that Karen wanted children more than anything and he had months to tell her. Karen received no support from Richard, by the way. All he's done is pay Karen's husband to keep his mouth shut about the marriage.

@improvguru There's a lot that doesn't make sense here:why she would marry such a mis-matched guy who none of her family even liked when half the world worshipped her?
rematpac 1 year ago

Ive been into music allmy life and can headbang to nirvana and smooch along with the Beach Boys with equal impunity. I never ever heard anyone criticizing the voice of Karen Carpenter, its so sweet and so lush as to be above normalmoans, and also its easy to overlook the part Richard played in the overall sound--all the oooohs and ahhhs heavy with overproduction and adding to the lush sound were his doing---this is maybe my favourite Carpenters song--for taday

...Richard claimed that he and John Bettis wanted to write a song to 'appeal to the average dollar holder' or something to that effect. As it turns out, they created one of the finest pieces of pop music in history. Everything about this song is perfect. To everyone, check out the album version clocking in at 4:10. The team of Richard Carpenter and John Bettis wrote this song which frames Karen's vocal tallents so well. They capitalized on the brilliance of Karen's lower vocal register at the start of this song which was to be the last top 10 hit for the Carpenters -- this song is one of their best
