Senator Sanders is the last line of defense in the battle for democracy, sign the petition and openly support this amendment. Threaten your current representatives with replacement if they do not take action. This amendment MUST PASS!
Does this affect an individual's freedom of speech? Arguably. However, an individual only has freedom of speech when it is not harming others, for example inciting a riot is illegal. Similarly having individuals that control the wealth of the country essentially choosing our president because they have the means to more widely disperse their own speech is harmful to the whole.
What's wrong with this tactic: It does not affect an individual's ability to donate enormous amounts of capital to a political campaign, simply a corporation's. It should instead be put into law that there is a fairly small cap to the amount any individual, corporation or otherwise, can contribute to a campaign with no way around it. Make all political commercials, be they televised or on radio, banned if they are not paid for by the campaign funds of a candidate.
@Madfoot713 We ALL like the First Amendment. Stating that Money+ free speech flies in the face of this. Corporations are not people. Bravo Senator Sanders. Finally a politician willing to stand up for what is correct- who has moral character.
@TinaDesireeBerg Corporations are people. Not persons, but people. What else are corporations? Is a corporation a building? A piece of paper? An idea?
No. A corporation is a group of people, and what Sen. Sanders is talking about here is censorship. Sorry. I respect him, but I won't mince words.
In reference to skyghosts' comment, ignorance such as this could only be found in a cavernous void where the concepts of Democracy and Ethical thought don't exist. Your shrill all-caps comment speaks for itself and appears to be written by a low-level employee of the Koch brothers, who are fortunately viewed by a growing # of Americans as vulgar brigands!...And thank you, Bernie! From millions of us! :)

THIS PROPOSED AMENDMENT WOULD VIOLATE THE CONSTITUTION! Business's are the extension of the People who own them. And the Individuals have the CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to express themselves thru their businesses. Also to say Poor people can raise money to influence an election but a person with money can't WOULD VIOLATE EQUALITY LAWS! ALSO ADVERTISING DOESN'T DETERMINE ELECTIONS AND ISN'T A VOTE. CITIZENS ARE DOING THE VOTING REGARDLESS OF ADVERTISING. THIS IS TRYING TO BYPASS THE CONSTITUTION!
@skyghosts Amending the Constitution would violate the Constitution? LOL, you should try to get your money back from whoever taught you Constitutional law!
Bernie Sanders, we need you every single day. We need to add Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Baldwin's voice to the senate. Then maybe we can have "change we can believe in."
I was hoping for a link to a petition. I'll look for one - there MUST be one to allow us to support your amendment. Senator Sanders - once again, Thank You for what you do to try to attempt and preserve these United States.
If corporations are people, then the individual shareholders should not be personally protected from lawsuits against the corporation.
Also Senator Sanders, thank you for being one of the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN who voted against the criminal Defense Authorization Act. The other 93 Senators should be run out of town.
Citizens United was the straw that broke the camel's back. Historically from the days of Jamestown Virginia, to Plymouth Colony, to the granting of charters, this country was founded on the principle of laissez faire capitalism. Yet, the founding fathers saw fit to put restraints on commerce and to promote the general welfare. But this country and its Supreme Court, has seen fit to commit judicial activism and proclaim by fiat, that corps are people and have the same rights as people. we r done!
@journeyer58 Want to learn more about what the implications of Citizens United vs. Federal Elections Commission means, pm me and I'll be happy to source all the material that is extant regarding a judicially active court that has not followed the law but instead set precedent in stating that corporations are corporeal beings. The implications are staggering and cannot be less than what is imagined. To find out pm and I'll be glad to help.
@Akadesigns I'd agree with that if senate/congress had many more politicians like him but there are just a few and they are outnumbered by center-Democrats, blue dogs, Republicans, and neocons. To be able to push some serious, progressive legislation Bernie needs to be at the top.
@gatorhighlights4 I agree that he would have the powers he does not currently have. And maybe the most important one, the power of being pivotal in the public discourse. But still, being chosen as President wouldn't change the power balance of congress. Legislation is passed there. Not in the White House. If anything he would probably lose credibility with progressives, for not doing enough.
When I look at the US, sometimes I see no hope for the working class people of your country. But when I see your passion to do justice, my hope reignites, and my passion inflames. Keep up the good work Senator. Greetings from Norway.
@Akadesigns I couldn't agree more with your statement. Senator Sanders and perhaps a few others (A. Grayson and D. Kucinich springs to mind), are the only politicians in the US that seem to care about the lower and middle class of their country. "Corporations are people", what a laughable statement. How unlimited campaign funds can be considered "free speech" is beyond me. You have another supporter from Norway, Senator Sanders.
I saw no corporations serving in our wars.....but I did see some corporations benefit from the wars.

Amending the constitution would now not violate it because of the lex posterior principle.
