Whether people accept it or not....Vani and P.susheela are far better than Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar. I remember once SPB mentioning that " People call P.susheela as south Indian Lata Mangeshkar. Actually Lata should be called as North Indian P.Susheela ".... Lata and Asha bhosle said they will not sing in Vasant desai's composition if he gave chances to Vani jayaram.......I hate Lata and asha bhosle....what cunning ladies....shame on them....
you're so off-base, it's actually quite sad. if vani and susheela are so great, then why is it that north indian composers don't ask them to sing? the south indian composers (including illaiyaraja) beg lataji and ashaji to sing their compositions, whereas north indian ones couldn't care less for the south indian female singers. lata/asha did not play any games, they were simply better than the rest. period.

Latha may have sung no more than 2 or 3 songs for Ilayaraja...asha may have sung a few more than latha. And that's it. FYI, naushad, manmohan, chalil choudary, o p nayyar are known to have worked with susheela and vani and marvelled at their talent. for eg, Listen to the tamil version of "woh kaun thi?" (Yaar Nee) and see how susheela has rendered the songs.
@koodhi55 i have nothing but respect for susheela and vani.. i just think that they had nothing to offer north indian music. their pronunciation is not very good, and their voices are somewhat heavy for my taste. i just don't think they are cut out for complex hindustani classical songs the way lataji and ashaji are. in the same sense, lata/asha can not render carnatic songs the way susheela/vani can.

Hindi film composers rarely utilized South Indian singers but were hard at wok imitating western tunes and adding latest sound effects like echo. surely you aren't talking of naushad, madan mohan, and khayyam? or roshan, sd burman, or ravindra jain? in any case, vani jayaram and p susheela and s janaki are all fantastic singers obviously.. among the best in the world. i just personally am not a huge fan of their voices and singing style. but i'm not biased; i think chitra is easily one of the top 5 female singers ever. however, no one can deny, lataji and ashaji are institutions.

There are examples like Yaar Nee - every single song of which is copied lock, stock and barrel from Woh Kaun Thi. I agree that Janaki doesn't have much accent, but Vani had truckloads of it. In fact, she did not deserve the assignments she got in Hindi. Neither did Yesudas or SPB. The Hindi music directors were actually generous.

There is a very different sense of appreciation for musical styles between the North and the South. Many extremely talented regional singers never made it in Bollywood, because many musicians composed songs particularly suited to Lata and Asha's range and tone, so, in a way its the music composers doing that other singers did not get a chance at singing those songs.
The hindi film word is not like the South. The Latha Mangeshkar mafia has always prevented talented singers making their mark in hindi. Suman Kalyanpur, Hemalatha, Yamini Krishnamoorthy , Sulachana Pandit etc are the other victims.

Do you think there is no police protection available for Indian citizens? If you have evidence, please produce it, otherwise stop rumour mongering. You are right about Lata and Asha gaurding their terrirory. Lata did not like even O.P nayyar considering Asha and refused to sing for him. But Asha was so super talented that O.P nayyar managed without Lata. In order to displace some established people one has to come up with something spectacular. That is true in any field.
come on...you can't say that... no one can match the sweetness of p susheela...latha herself has marveled at the sweetness of susheela's voice. There are only 2 singers whose voice I can listen for a long time and that's susheela and latha.
i haven't heard too many susheela songs to form an opinion... but from those i have heard.. my personal opinion is that lata and asha's voices are much more polished and much more professional than susheela, vani, or janaki. chitra is more like lata and asha and other north indian singers in that regard.
You have to hear the songs of Vani Jayaram,S.Janaki etc.Lata and Asha are more famous while Bollywood films are famous.For me these singers at par with Lata and Asha
