I watched this show when it aired and I was so pissed that Wynton barely had 5 minutes. Robin Williams was also a guest that night, and they pretty much wasted the entire second half of the show talking to him and plugging some crappy movie that flopped. They should've let him play two sets and talk to Letterman instead of Williams pointlessly eating up air time.
Winton e` il meglio di tutti come trombettista jazz e su questo credo che non ci piova... Ma sempre co' sto dixieland!!!! Basta!!!!!!!! Siamo nel 2010!!!!!!!
@frostywhipcream No ONE is better than him, but i would say Jazz, Louis Armstrong.....Classical, Maurice Andre.....but i say this with the caveat that music is not a competition.....but as far as anyone out there now....Wynton=most complete
@frostywhipcream well actually I absolutely love wynton's playing and i have nothing but the highest respect for him he is one of my trumpet idols but I think that Rafael Mendez is better.
@frostywhipcream miles davis, maynard ferguson, louis armstrong. You can't name a greatest trumpet player ever, because all of the greats have a signature trademark and a sound that can't be done the same way that they do it. Like maynard ferguson, he could squeel all day. Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis both have the sound that can't be created again and revolutionized jazz and blues.
@frostywhipcream Well I do like Wynton a lot, but there have been many, MANY great jazz trumpet players. Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard, these guys are all wonderful! I think you should really give them a listen if your into the whole jazz scene.
@frostywhipcream umm, maybe because there is NO greatest trumpet player? So he can do everything? He has a better piccolo sound than Maurice Andre? He can play higher than Wayne? MF? He can bebop harder than Dizzy? He's a greater lead than James? He can play orchestrally? Better than Bud? Phil Smith?
get it? it's all opinion. when will people understand that.... jeez.
@frostywhipcream Freddie Hubbard in his prime (1964-ish), Dizzy circa 1950 and Roy Eldridge throughout most of his career could all smoke Wynton technically, almost everything in the style in which he plays is drawn from Armstrong, and though noone would make the argument that Miles could get anywhere near Wynton on a technical level, his 50 year career as bandleader/composer alone put him up in the pantheon of greats... however, as inf1nity points out, it is all personal opinion anyhow.
Man I love wynton. Two things, he seems to be making backwards progress in jazz. Seeing mike Manerni play put this into perspective. Also ever since his sound has fuzzier and less focused, partly because of monette trumpets, he uses mutes more often. Pity. I still like his playing though.
@garzaedu I dont understand why you will be saying studying. I think speaking of him because he is our embassador of jazz. He plays music that we rarely hear anymore. Music of our beiggings of jazz. The very roots of jazz.
@boricuatrumpet69 Understand? People still study Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, etc. Their genius is still being explored to fully understand their intent in writing what they did. Wynton Marsalis is on a level that has him in a league of his own. His choice for using certain notes, his rhythmic genius, his range, his TONE, etc. He's a musical voice that'll be heard for centuries to come...the embodiment of what everyone thinks is unbelievable in regards to a musician and an intellectual.
i dont care who's better, his music makes me orgasm just sittin here.
