Destroyed 99.9%? I don't believe that in an instance. Fish, insects, birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians all survived the impact, and a number of species in each of those categories. I understand the high percentage in extinction, but that high? I don't even think all the dinosaurs died anyway, some of them (a minute amount) survived and evolved.

Also, the impact this video is describing happened during the Permian period, millions of years before dinosaurs even evolved. The asteroid that killed the dinos wiped out about 60-70% of all life, luckily birds had already evolved from dinosaurs.
@MrBLP14 I watched a documentary about what they would do if a meteor was to hit. They wouldn't blast the meteor as that would still cause the pieces to head for our earth. But they would detonate nukes /beside/ the meteor so it would be blasted off course and miss our planet. But it would take more than one nuke to do this. @xfeng610 Doesnt work like that unfortunatley.Asteroids will just break up into smaller pieces and wud shower down and could possibly do alot of damage and also some asteroids are apparently like sand the nuke wud actually have no effect apparently.Ive watched alot of documentaries and they say this over and over again.

@iAMsoBEAST1 I honestly wouldn't count on that. No organization currently exists whose purpose it is to scan for potential Earth impacting asteroids and what little work is done is done by amateurs and underfunded programs. There isnt anywhere near enough eyes watching to guarantee us even a reasonable chance at detection.

@EmperorofCartoons We'd know if a asteroid was going to hit us well before it did. And yes, there organization who spend time looking for asteroids. We have most of the larger (planet destroying) asteroid well accounted for. I doubt we would be able to predict a large impact on Earth...

Destroyed 99.9%? I don't believe that in an instance. Fish, insects, birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians all survived the impact, and a number of species in each of those categories. I understand the high percentage in extinction, but that high? I don't even think all the dinosaurs died anyway, some of them (a minute amount) survived and evolved.

@Kittywhiskers1000 I heard it was closer to 95%, even so, the remaining 5% is still a huge variety of life. Also, the impact this video is describing happened during the Permian period, millions of years before dinosaurs even evolved. The asteroid that killed the dinos wiped out about 60-70% of all life, luckily birds had already evolved from dinosaurs.

@MrBLP14 I watched a documentary about what they would do if a meteor was to hit. They wouldn't blast the meteor as that would still cause the pieces to head for our earth. But they would detonate nukes /beside/ the meteor so it would be blasted off course and miss our planet. But it would take more than one nuke to do this. Who's to say they haven't already done this before?

Mt. St. Helens was a 24 megaton blast and the most powerful bomb ever developed was 100 megatons... now take into account the Mt. St. Helens is lest than 1/4 the size of that meteor and is made up of much softer material.... We dont have to the power to really damage a meteor of that size..

Well, the human species has A: super telescopes and probes in space, making possible to detect such inmense asteroid with YEARS of anticipation and B: Has and can develop a nuclear missile that destroys such asteroid far enough from earth to cause minimum damage. If we, as a species, don't do that in the case of an asteroid, we DESERVE TO DIE.

@LesPaul2006 They also say that an asteroid that could be cataclysmic could hit the earth with as little warning as 48 hrs or less !! We are NOT gods and we can't see EVERY asteroid coming at us !! We cannot predict if something were going to hit us from space 100% of the time. We really only know about an estimated 2% of space now. If you really believe all of that stuff you see on the net and on TV and you fear it, then become a scientist and do something to stop it future generations. GoodLK

@LesPaul2006 In the short term, we have problems that certainly SEEM worse to us. In the big picture though asteroid impact and the eventual loss of the sun are the 2 biggest problems human faces. All other problems are avoidable. These 2 are not.
