  • there is talk at the moment of rebuilding ..but to a smaller scale a new crystal palace in the original grounds....would be a venue to host shows..concerts etc...will be good for the area...

    newcrystalpalace

this is the website for those interested...

  • crystal palace is not in hyde park

  • It was originally

  • ok yeah i think i remember learning that as a kid. must have slipped my mind.

  • This is interesting; there is still a BBC recording of Richard Dimbleby reporting live from the burning palace, interviewing various spectators. Its loss is a great one. I wonder what it would be used for now if it were still extant.

  • Crystal Palace is not in Hyde Park its located

    about 7 miles from there

  • think he was showing that it was originally in Hyde park and alater moved to Sydenham hill

  • yes I didnt know that before but found out later

I was at the Crystal Palace grounds recently around seeing whats left. Hope they take care to preserve remaining objects of its History. Also they need to work on the Dinosaur Park there, the water features and waterfalls have old cans and rubbish tossed in there that sure doesnt look good for attracting visitors. Especially since its a landmark.

There were ducks pecking away at old plastic potato chip bags tossed in the little streams

    .

  • They moved it. Then it burnt to the ground in 1936. Sir Joseph Paxton was me GGGG Uncle. He designed it.

  • ok yes i just visited the remains of it

couple months ago. they need to clean up the streams and ponds waterfalls in the dino park tho.Quite a lot of plastic bags and beer cans or get some volunteers going.its a shame.

  • @dbarl64 hiya....all the lakes and water works have been done recently...alot nicer now!!!

  • @nova65350

OK Thats good to know I'll be chkng it out in couple months, I was there last year it looked a bit cleaner

    Thanks for the update.

  • I like the sphinxes

  • Yeah in a town called "Crystal Palace" LOL, I think Palace would have been East Norwood, but instead thye named it after the great Palace. I lived here for years, and in the last 5 years it has started going down hill big itme, a real shame.

  • Just spent 2 months there again

seems like things are improving. Closing down the Woolworths made it lose its centre of gravity

They just need another one like that and not another bar or Restaurant.

Woolworths as low scale as they are was like a Anchor to a ship kept it steady and smooth.

But things seem to be getting Historically preserved which is good. Like the Old Cinema hopefully. The Blackbird Bakery is good

and great tasting coffee and cakes.

  • i didnt think many yanks visited the palace

  • i lived in anerley and had to move away cos its gone so far down hill

  • Not bad, but maybe it could use some sound effects to liven it up. And why does it start in Berlin...?

  • sehr cool... ich werd die postmodern times gleich mal abonnieren ;-)
