  • I just bought a 94 deville the 4.9L, white paint black tint no rust whatsoever 150,000km. Anything to watch out for?

  • @julianasage trust me.. its not set on KM..... My 96 Eldorado ETC runs the same speed if not faster, Northstar 4.6 is a fucking beast for the size plus caddys tend to be heavy as fuck... plus they have 300 hp and 275 ft lb torque

  • For what it's worth, somebody gave me a cherry '91 park avenue. Tranny lunched 10 years ago and the 3.8 locked tight from sitting. stuck in a junkyard '90 4t60 (no electronic besides converter lockup) and let the Buford's ecm run the 4.9... two of the caddy's injectors get to share a transistor and i had to jack up the fuel presssure to 115 - but it hauls azz in the lighter car! [oh yeah- the 4t60 has a 3.77 final drive instead of the craven original 2.84] Any body want me to make a vid?

  • LOL 0 MPG!

  • Looks like the SLS was shifting a little early....

  • i had a 03 dts and i smoked a 4.9 deville really bad from a dig but a friend had a seville with the 4.5 v8 and it was a rocket!

  • 0-60 mph how fast ?

  • hes got it set on Km

  • I'm thinking of getting an 02 or 03 STS. I have driven the SLS's. Anyone know what the major differences are? I know the STS has 25 more HP, is that the only difference. I assume the ride quality is still about the same? I appreciate any opinions on one over the other. Thanks. I'm coming from an 05 Stage 2 STi, lol. Need something more chill and relaxing.

  • @Srirachaa The ride in an STS will be a bit stiffer than in an SLS, but not by a whole lot. I believe the 25HP difference comes from different cam settings, and most people say the difference doesn't seem like much. The bigger difference is the transmission. The STS has lower gearing, which paired with the extra 25HP, will allow it to accelerate better than the SLS, but the SLS will get a few better MPG because of it. Other than that, it's styling preference and options.

  • @nflgosteelers Thanks for the reply. That's pretty much what I have read as well. Do you own one? How do you like it?

  • @Srirachaa Yeah, I have a 2000 STS and it is a great car. I have owned trucks and SUV's over the past six years and the STS is a nice change of pace. It's black on black (and if you can find one, they are the best looking I think) with 106,000 miles. It only has a few minor issues. The fuel gauge doesn't work once it dips below 1/2 tank and it loses about 1qt of oil per every 1000mi (or on road trips about 700). The only thing I don't like about it is being stuck with an auto transmission!

  • @nflgosteelers Yeah, black on black is what I would want. I have found some 03's for around 8k with around 80k miles on them. I totally feel ya on the auto tranny thing. CTS-V when I have the means. I am coming from a modded STi with a 6 speed gearbox. I'll be in for a huge change in every aspect. But, I got a sport-bike for speed, acceleration, and pure fun. I need some comfort to wheel around in too.

  • @Srirachaa Yeah, they are good cars. I would honestly like to have a Subaru with a manual, or something similar. I am moving away from my family and my dad is basically lending me the STS until I'm done with school and can afford something of my own. I sold my truck because living alone more than 3 hours away from my family would mean a lot of highway driving in a short wheelbase pickup haha.

  • I love the 91 DeVille. Great car, pretty fast acceleration considering it's age and mileage.

I'm looking to get a 92 to replace my 90 DeVille that's on it's way out unfortinately my 90 has 270k miles.

    Thanks for the video. :)

  • @Forgoten214 270k Wow you got that many miles out of it.

  • @joust671

Yep actually turned out to my advantage I purchased a 1992 from the 1990 insurance money. It was hit by a drunk driver on July 4th of this year. RIP 1990 DeVille!

  • @Forgoten214 damn good car !

  • how fast form 0 to 100km/h ?

  • Them 4.9 motors are practically 5.0 mustang engines. People forget that. I used to dust Caprices in my 93 DeVille.

  • nicee

  • damn the 4.9 packs a punch!

  • I have an 89 Eldorado 4.5 and it moves pretty good for 22 years old and 179k.

  • First of all you should know that deVille is bigger car than seVille...

  • its not kick down.

  • I used a tripod in the back seat to show the whole cluster on my 1993 deville touring 4.9L i've clocked mine at under 8, probably because of the relatively low mileage of 93k

  • Nice video thanks for this.

My Deville has 267k mileage but it needs some work. Runs pretty good overall such high mileage. Makes me feel good to see another high mileage Deville on here. =)

  • the northstars a 5.3?

  • @wccmoose no 4.6, they didn't make a 5.3. Tis a Chevy motor.

  • Use "2" ore even "1" on the SLS or STS for 0-60 runs and you should have the transmission shift much more aggresively (performance algorithm mode). My '94 STS with 135K chirps the front tires hard on a 1-2 shift in that mode vs a more gentle shift in "D".

  • I got my 95 Lincoln Mark VIII - 4.6L V8 4 cam - 300 hp.

What the difference of twin cam and four cam?

  • @kenneykole

in this case it means the same thing. DOHC=twin cam its a v8 so it has to heads so it has 4 cams total.

  • I love that sound!

  • the 91 Lac moving like that? nice

  • why say 32 valve when all normal v8's have 32 valves?

  • @dnl5649 What is your kind of normal V8? All the normal V8's I know (302, 305, 327, 350, 383, 400, etc) are all 2 valves per cylinder because they have 1 cam. 2x8= 16! YAY! When you have a Northstar which is dual overhead cams you have 2 cams per head for a total of....wait for it...4! Each cam gets 2 valves per cylinder (2 intake 2 exhaust) which makes 4 valves per cylinder! Lets do some more math! 4 valves x 8 cylinders= 32 valves! Do your homework and you can have your ice cream Timmy.

  • @TheCamarokid17 my brother wrote that. yea i know, its got 4 valves per cylinder cause its a performance engine

  • @Braaap250r you used another 50 seconds writing that comment, now shut up and watch another video :)

  • i got an 00 sls with only 40k miles

  • woot oregon

  • @Braaap250r - and why is that my friend? The guy did exactly what he said he would do, as listed in the title. Duh.

  • go ohv v8

  • @gdwriter ha ha!!! bite me!!!! lol your funny! i subbed you

  • Love my 03

  • Wow 257k, certainly got your money's worth for that car!

  • the 4.9 is a bit slow.. kinda worn tho.. i gotta 94 Cadillac fleetwood that would prolly match ur SLS... check out my videos I got da 0-85 mph with the LT1 check out the vid

  • I wish I still had my 89 deville. Good old car

  • next time drop the 4.6 into 1st it will shift itself at like 6500rpm. i have done it multiple times in my 03 deville dts

  • the northstar its a dohc v8,peharps the 4.9 v8 is a ohv

  • slow... its was't Vmax

  • go ohv v8

  • go ohv

  • my sister had a 91 sedan deville gold edition was a nice car!

  • lol 1 mpg when you floored the northstar then when you let off it sky rocketed up to 70 mpg

  • 10 years of technology advancement only to improve a 9 second run to 60 by one second.

GM shaved a lot more time off the 0-60 times with the cars that it kept OHV. It concurred the super car world with a cheap Corvette, powered by an OHV. It got itself out of a bankruptcy with a Camaro, powered by an OHV. It make the fastest sedan in the world, powered by an OHV.

Do we have a contest here? Not really.

  • @wildbloodydragon Well the northstar made its debut in 1993 running a 0-60 in 6.8 seconds in a caddilac eldorado. Yes you are right some of the faster cars are OHV powered but dont just look at the speed they produce. look at size of engine and fuel econ. The ns is 4.6L vs the ls1/ls3 5.7 The 4.6 makes 300hp avg (depends on model and year), the ls1 makes 310-350 depending on year and model.

  • @bbrewer5 The 1993-95 ZR1 vettes had the LT5 which was a DOHC 5.7L (the northstar was designed from this engine.) and produced 405hp and 385lb torque and this was in 1993. Just think what a modern GM performance engine would produce if it was DOHC. I just had this OHV vs DOHC arugument with a buddy the other day. kindof on a rampage lol. I could go on but im getting tired of typing lol.

  • @wildbloodydragon the 1997 caddilac eldorado weighed roughly 3750 +/- 50 lbs. with a 300hp 4.6L DOHC mated to a heavy and cumbersome 4T80E 4sp auto and STILL managed 18 city/27 highway MPG. Thats a couple more than the 1997-2004 vette that weighed 650lbs less and was mated to the much better T5056 6speed man. I could make it look worse when comparing it to the heavier camaro but i think ive made the point. The dohc is smoother (luxury car) and more fuel efficient and makes more hp per CI

  • @wildbloodydragon oh snap, your going to have to read my posts from the bottom to top lol....sorry about that

  • @bbrewer5 lol, yeah man fuck this new youtube shit.

I dunno man, I go by the fueleconomy, gov. It's the official EPA website. It's 15 city 24 highway for the Cadillac. It's pretty good no doubt. I fucking love those Eldorados too, was gonna get one. But facts are facts. 1998 Camaro LS1 is 16 city 25 highway, (15-23 on auto) and weights maybe 200lbs less at most, but it's almost 2 second faster to 60. Almost same power too.

No question OHC is smoother. OHV can be pretty smooth too though.

  • @bbrewer5 GM's OHCs are good no doubt but their OHVs are just crazy. They're prolly the only ones who can make an OHV worth a fuck. Besides Dodge of course lol. I mean look at the LS7 Z06. 24mph on the highway and 505hp NA. Shit man tell me that's not good.

  • @wildbloodydragon

Well given the time GM has been perfecting the OHV design it doesnt surprise me. What they can do with that design is insane. People can bash OHV but it gets the job done.

  • @Allante715 Straight up man. While everyone else was working on OHCs GM put the same amount of time into the OHV.

What pisses me off is when people say OHV is "old school" or outdated, while in reality it's been updated just as much as any OHC for the same period of time, and the basic design is only a few years older.

Nothing wrong with OHC but I think GM should stick with their OHV because they invested a lot of time to it and are actually good at it.

  • i had a 92 seville sts with a 4.9 in it with 220,000 miles on it and it got up way faster then that 01 did them 4.9's are monsters my shit blew up i got 220,000 and it was done

  • nice video, buddy. this is C0RSA1R. howdy!

  • The 4.9 is probably the best fuel injected motor Cadillac has ever built. If the Northstar hadn't had the problems with head gaskets and such the Northstar would be the best.

  • I was like "I have a feeling this is from a cadillac forum member...." sure enough...lol i'm kick94sts on the forums

  • I just clocked these with a timer and tried 3 times thinking some error occured.

The first was actually over 8 seconds, and the second about 10 seconds 0-60.

I understand that 257k miles is not letting the motor be at it's best.

  • My '94 STS does 0-60 in 6 seconds.

    Amazing car!!!

  • Are Cadillacs expensive to fix?

  • Absolutely. It'd be thousands just to replace head gaskets and thats a common problem for them

  • I own a cvadillac cts and it costs me $85 for an oil change. so yes they are very high maintanance.

  • @TimD106 not if your like me and hate dealer service and do it all yourself.

  • @JJ9715

    not really

  • @JJ9715 They like to engineer certain parts then make special tools for them and cram large v8 engines sideways in spaces they dont belong...so Yes b/c it means you have to go to the dealership

  • Love the dash on the sls, both have a sweet sound and gota luv ur caddis!

  • @Braaap250r

    grow up

  • @ dick cheese. i did, over the painstakingly long video of a car possibly worth the adaptive cruise control system on my sts. blow me

  • THAN DONT WATCH DUMMY - GOLLY - and dont respond to me wit yo dumb ass

  • They probably have the same 4 speed, just different years, but same gearing and shit. 97+ w bodies shift at those points too. You think GM would change the gearing up a bit but bleh.

  • lol 1 mpg while flooring it

  • @2Stroke80 Sorry to correct you, but it shows 0 (nada) MPG until it hits around 54mph... then shows 1.

So when you floor it... all the fuel falls out the back of the car. :-)

  • sts my sts is faster then this

  • Whats faster an STS or SLS?

  • @victoriadish STS has more power, so I guess it would be quicker

  • @victoriadish

sts . usually the touring versioun is the fastest of any model

  • Why did the Seville shift so early? I drive an '01 SLS myself and mine will wind up to about 6k before shifting, or 6,100-6,200 when locked in 2nd gear. Mine also pulls a little harder, and it's at 123k.

  • Not sure. For some reason, I didn't keep the pedal buried in the Seville like I did in the DeVille (even though the old girl has 257,000 miles on her).

  • still that 4.9 sounds great

  • @gdwriter 91 Octane fuel or better, 7-7.5 qts eng oil NOT 8qts like some fill the Northstar engine with and she will rev out just fine sir! Just wanted to share my .02 since I also own some Caddies and grew up with them. Keep 'em going man.

  • Very Cool Video!

    Impressive!

    Brent

  • gdwriter, try leaving the SLS in 2nd gear when doing wide open throttle runs. I know on my STS if I do this it will have a higher shift point in 2nd gear which makes a huge difference and the tires chirp in both 1st and 2nd.

It WILL shift into 3rd and 4th so don't worry about it being stuck at red line.

And if you're worried about HG issues, just keep doing what you were doing in this vid. Keep it clean, maintained and free of carbon and it will last a very long time.

  • your not even punching it. when i hammer down in my '99 sts. that thing will light em up till 50. take another video of you going like a bad outta hell from 0-60.

  • @Chumlend This one isn't an STS, its an SLS. The SLS has a different gear ratio, less HP, but it has a higher torque curve due to a different cam profile. He had it floored.

  • ohh. cuz i was goona say mine has 150k and is still running strong and those 300hp are no joke when you wanna have a little fun. lol

  • Yeah they sometimes feel like they are going to fly off the road. Addicting to drive.

  • My 4.9 1992 STS Has mad me so proud. 200,000 miles and I have stomped the hell out of every boy racer who would run me. As long as we shut it down by 85....N Star keeps going 4.9 runs out of breath. Some people have changed out the heads and used the turbo from the 4.9 Trans Am. I am now looking in to the possibility...

  • My next car!!

  • not a big difference, perfer the 4.9 OHV

  • The 4.9 is a way better engine(in reliablity)than the northstar.

  • the northstar peels your face back compared to the 4.9 i owned both engines and ill get another northstar but only if it like has 20K miles on it lol untill then ill buy more lincoln intech 4.6 engine cars

  • I remember the day I once drove a 1997 DeVille. I have the reflex of flooring the pedal to overtake someone, and so I did this time. Motherfucker almost took off the ground O_O

  • not fair the 91 is beat down high miles against low miles what did you think was goin to happen its like you against a 90 year old who is going to win hmmmmmmmmmm was a good video though

  • Oh, I know it wasn't a fair fight. I knew the Northstar would be much faster. I hadn't initially to do a comparison with the 4.9, but the opportunity presented itself.

Mostly, I was impressed that the 4.9, despite the age and high mileage, made a credible run. She may be old, but she still knows how to get up and go.

  • I had a 1993 4.9, but then i wrecked it, i LOVE caddies and i loved mine. what a sound those 4.9s have ay? lots of torque.

  • @mitcholobe tru shit man i got a 92 wit 4.9 in and i dust northstars all day bruh

  • I like your Video, Good Job......5*****STARS!! on these awesome pieces of machinery!!

  • my 2002 sts seville does 60 in first gear my cadi is freakin fast i love it

  • or sorry mines an 2001 i was getting confused with my truck

  • The 4.9 is a bad ass motor. The 1992 model with the wierd single muffler can be replaced with a 80's Firebird flowmaster muffler. It sounds BAD ASS!!!

  • An STS driven perfectly on a good weather day should score a 6.1 run to 60, maybe a little longer but not by much. The DTS does it in 6.6, so the STS should at least pull a 6.4.

  • i own a dts and i beat a 4.9 car with only 70k on it pretty good

  • those old 4.9 engines are amazing. I had one with 210000 and it didnt burn a drop of oil or leak any

  • sts much faster

  • you were not completely on the throttle on that seville

  • 8 seconds for seville 12 for deville

  • The 4.9 has that good ol' V8 growl that reminds me of a 60's muscle car.

  • should have used the 4.9 from a 93 caddy. Those care more powerful by lke 20hp

  • Well, the '91 and '01 are what I own.

  • i had a 93 deville but the tranny fell out lol.

    So now i have an 83 280zx

  • I had the transmission in the DeVille rebuilt at 216,000 miles. The car runs great, especially when you consider the age and mileage.

  • yeah i mean the engine in mine ran strong till the very end. I had it straight pipe and it sounded nice.

  • thx for the vid! :) love the old 4.9 sound....

  • 10-14 seconds 0 MPG! congrats!

  • 70 mpg when you let off the gas lol

  • i take that back its an sls not an sts but it shud be round 6.7 sec

  • didnt look floored in the first run becuz it shifted way be4 redline and u didnt launch the car so it wuda been more lyk 6.2 sec

  • OMG it got 1MPG!!!

  • Yeah, well, when you have it floored, don't expect good gas mileage, LOL.

Car actually averages 21 MPG. Got 27 MPG on the freeway with the cruise set at 70 MPH.
