A dog lunging at a friendly stranger is not showing guardian behavior, it is showing a lack of basic manners or sound stable temperament. The defining quality of true guardian breeds that is much lauded by their fanciers is their ability to distinguish a real threat (robber) from a fake threat (kids roughhousing, a hug, a friendly stranger).
The dog wouldnt have hurt her, mastiffs naturally have a 'protective' temperment and almost always give a warning bark if new people approach them and their owners.

Bad temperament is a "guard dog" which is what a Mastiff is supposed to be, letting a stranger probing his mouth.
Most people have NO idea of what a true Mastiff should be but hardly ever is anymore.
