Nice video Gavin, I'm going to be getting a Speedlite 430EXII soon and your video helped to show a progression from no flash to on camera flash to remote flash. Great, simple and quick with results. Keep it up.
Just a quick question, is it better to put on some sort of diffuser rather than pointing the flash directly to your daughter?
Not judging, just curious, because i see a lot of flash being somewhat diffused is better soft looking, and people say that direct flash gives harsh skin tone.
Dont know which is better, hope that u could help me here :D
@4Firearms......Yes you are an idiot. Kids have a natural innocence and beauty that can make shooting them really easy. If you can't see or understand this what are you doing even holding a camera? And the fact that the first thing popping into YOUR head is pedophilia begs the question: why aren't you seeing a psychiatrist?

Someone better give Gavin some VIDEO LESSONS as well as lessons on how to properly level a tripod. Scary stuff. Just teaching creepy Pedo photography.
@4Firearms I would say the fact that taking a child's portrait triggers pedo thoughts in your head first is more telling of you than anything else. Perhaps you she see a psychiatrist, or be in jail...
@aeroub Actually maybe YOU'RE the one with the sick mind having thought of it. That's Gavin's daughter and he is simply very proud to include her in his works as any father would be. Gavin has done a lot of great videos and generously shares his work and knowledge with all who want to learn and you should be thankful for it. What are you even doing here anyway? Go troll somewhere else. Gavin is very respected in the photo world and by us too.
This is truly amazing! Just exactly what I want/need. Starts with sunny no flash, continues to on camera flash and ended with off camera! That's how you teach photography!
Thankyou Gavin, pity in the last shot your model had a big black eye. But I learned a lot about how to position the off camera flash. Thanx again mate.
Thanks for that video Gavin, Well presented, I learned a lot. I will send this to my daughter, and ask for her daughter to be my model; similar to your model in age.
i love your videos i am new to photography and have the lucky chance to take pictures of my sister-in-law's wedding (alongside a professional), i have searched a few pictures to see what kinds of pictures i want to go for and this vid has helped me greatly! however i have a nikon d3100 and have recently ordered the yuguno yn-460 speedlight and would this be good enough and if so would the PT-04 fit my camera/speedlight to be able to use it without being on my camera as you have done? =)
Hi Gavin, I like how the last photos turned out by moving the flash around. However, I don't understand how the background, particularly the left side of the model became dark when it's supposed to be sunny? That darkness around her made the photo look dramatic and it's great.
Will my pop-up flash on my Canon 550D/T2i be sufficient. Or do I need to go to an external flash gun? It would be a hassle to carry the flash gun around "just in case" you want to use it in daylight.
I tried to take some photos today with a model in full sun using tips from your tutorial. i used my SB900 on the camera at about a 45 degree angle with the built in bounce card out, but i kept getting a hard shadow under the chin no matter what angle or strength i used... How do i avoid that hard shadow?
You're doing it all wrong. your approach defeats the purpose of doing flash fill and off camera lighting.Your images are all harsh and the shadows are all awfull.

@MousikesAnadyseis : There is a risk involved with using older flash devices on new DSLR flashes.
When triggering the flash there CAN be (this isn't allways the case) a "backfire" caused by the flash pulse (the flash pulse itself can be around 600V).
In newer flash devices this probably is TTL-logic (digital 5V) but in older flashes this can be a pulse beyond 5V causing electronics in your camera to malfunction (defects are also a possible effect of this.)
Very good video tutorial. :)) Yes, excellent show.
~ I was intrigued why some photographer used the flash in a sunny day (he was taking photos of Michael Schimacher :PP ) I saw the flash shoting-shoting and shoting and I tried do the same. The results are like you show so good.
Is it a good idea to use a uv filter or is a lens hood enough to shoot in situations like this or at a beach with sand and ocean mist and etc? What do you suggest? Thanks

@PhotoGavin Where can i buy that wireless thing for your flash? is that 28-135mm lense your using? i have that on my 50D as a kit lense. Thanks Gavin for the tips. Peace to you.
Can you please tell me what wireless trigger I can use for my Nikon D80 and Nikon SB 800? I would very much like to try what you showed in this video. BTW, great job, the pictures are lovely. Please help?
I don' t know if your D80 has a COMMANDER mode or not. My D70 requires an SB800 to act as a COMMANDER. The D90's own pop-up flash can double as a COMMANDER flash. Nikon calls this CLS or Creative Lighting System.
Also, Google "RF 602 review" You may like this radio trigger better than most.
@wondnaereh hey I own a D90 with sb600 flash and there's a way to use the wireless function without a receiver! this video helped me: watch?v=3XYMgZwWkHw
@wondnaereh I know you wrote this 5 months ago, but it bothers me that you don't need wireless devices woth newer Nikons and Nikon flashes. They are already built in. It's called CLS - Creative Lighting System that is triggered by infrared and not the flash itself.
@wondnaereh i have the d80 also. i use the cls system thats in your camera has built in and works great with sb800,sb900,sb600 you also can use your sb800 in comamder mode to control other off camera flash. the best part is that it works ttl ("through the lens") so no need for a light meter other than what is in your camera. do a youtube search on nikon cls system. i bought a radio trigger then later returned cuz the cls system is really reliable and its in your camera free
@wondnaereh just now reading your question. I use the D90 with a SB600 and can wireless trigger the SB600 using the Nikon CLS system, placing the D90 in commander mode. Reading the specs on the D80 and the SB800 sounds like it has the same CLS/Commander Capability as the D90/SB600 combo and then some.
@wondnaereh@PhotoGavin Why don't you just use the Nikon's creative lighting system. You can use D80's pop-up flash to trigger your SB-800. You can even use TTL with the creative lighting system.
When I read the comments on your first video, I actually thought you were paying people to leave good comments, but after watching some of you videos I undertand why people leave the fantastic comments!
You really rock mate! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to make these nice videos, they explain everything very well in plain understandable English. Thanks once again.
I would say, also guide about White Balance in this situation. Are you using the sun mode.?...And how did u made that hallow effect, is it photoshop or just raw?
i like this video, I might have a career shift now to Photography, :) Thank you Gavin for this wonderful tips ... anyways, i like the blue eyes of the model :)
after all the sites and videos ive seen over the years i cant get enough of your videos, and also out of all of them your videos have helped me the most, your an awesome guy a brilliant photographer and you dont confuse people with crazy methods or fancy words you do it PERFECTLY! Thank you!
Damn it... I got a relatively nice cam for an advancing beginner as myself - SMC Pentax-DAL 18-55mm (3.5) but I still didn't figure out what are those ISO/AWB's/Shutter speeds and whatr exactly they do. :S
I'm with you lol.. I have no idea.. and I just got a Nikon D5000 with a Nikor 18-55mm .. When I take pictures with it they just look normal.. not that cool..
Just do some reading go on google and type in understanding iso ect. and you'll find plenty of articles to teach you really quick. I have the Canon EOS Rebel xsi with kit lens so far and have got some amazing photos

@wondnaereh I know you wrote this 5 months ago, but it bothers me that you don't need wireless devices woth newer Nikons and Nikon flashes. They are already built in. It's called CLS - Creative Lighting System that is triggered by infrared and not the flash itself.
pena645 1 year ago

@wondnaereh @PhotoGavin Why don't you just use the Nikon's creative lighting system. You can use D80's pop-up flash to trigger your SB-800. You can even use TTL with the creative lighting system.

Also kindly explain RAW Vs JPEG...!
baga123xyz 2 years ago
RAW - more detail, in quality.. and colors. larger file.
JPEG - smaller file, out of the camera can be uploaded given to customer. your more limited in quality and color compression.
adrianvilcan 2 years ago 2
What would you recommend using? I've heard people arguing about JPEG or RAW, and I'm still pretty new to photography. :D
iAteUrCookies 2 years ago
If you are taking the pictures straight out of the camera and uploading on website/CD, than RAW is no benefit to you.
However, if you take your photos into post-production (sharpening images, color correction, contrast, etc..) than RAW is VERY beneficial.
In other words, if you do a little work on images RAW will come out better in the end.
adrianvilcan 2 years ago
Okey dokes, thanks a lot for the explanation. :D

I would say, also guide about White Balance in this situation. Are you using the sun mode.?...And how did u made that hallow effect, is it photoshop or just raw?

Damn it... I got a relatively nice cam for an advancing beginner as myself - SMC Pentax-DAL 18-55mm (3.5) but I still didn't figure out what are those ISO/AWB's/Shutter speeds and whatr exactly they do. :S
JinJinDoe 2 years ago
I'm with you lol.. I have no idea.. and I just got a Nikon D5000 with a Nikor 18-55mm .. When I take pictures with it they just look normal.. not that cool..
8XxMvMxX9 2 years ago
That's because you have to mess with alot of the settings, shutter speeds f-stops ect to get the most out of an slr
smalltownkid2004 2 years ago
Oh ok cool. thanks man! I'll try doing that tomorrow and see what happens :)
8XxMvMxX9 2 years ago
Just do some reading go on google and type in understanding iso ect. and you'll find plenty of articles to teach you really quick. I have the Canon EOS Rebel xsi with kit lens so far and have got some amazing photos
