Hm, another quite flat performance by Evgeny "La boîte à joujoux" Kissin. Technically fine, and the sounds are even and beautiful and controlled and subtle.
But that is exactly the problem; Gretchen is in mental agony, she is tense with a kind of "Angst", anxiety. Her "evenness of soul" is truly gone and her mind is spinning out of control. Yet Kissin does not even begin to project this changed and intense mental state with his all too rustic playing.
The depth of what Kissin expresses in this playing goes beyond anything all imaginable. This is a once-in-a-lifetime performance, and a true example of music that transcends the body...
Although I have not yet seen the score, the more I think about it and listen to the music, what you said about the sextuplet format makes absolutely no sense, with all due respect. I have played much music in this rhythmic format which is very common. To have written it out as you describe, defies all logic. Now those sextuplets could be eighths or sixteenths, in 2/4 or 4/4, but it does not make any sense to be in 6/8 at all.
I have not actually seen the score, but with the overlying melody.s format, it would seem that the inner voice would be in sextuplet form with the meter of the piece being actually in 4/4. You piqued my interest though, and I shall check it out.
I just think that Wang just doesn't have the inate musicality that Kissin has. All the young musicians play the spots off their instruments or they wouldn't even be competitive these days. For most, sadly, it's an end in itself.
You're absolutely correct, of course. "Triplets x 2" equals sextuplets. Right church, wrong pew, metrically, however! I was concentrating on the concept and I'd classify my error as close to a typo; however we must get the record straight, and first and foremost find fault, since you bothered to do nothing else with respect to the posting!!
BTW, this is far more expressive and imaginative playing than the current "rage", Yuja Wang, at her Verbier recital this year.
Jeez- how old was he here? He looks so young! I love Evgeny, he's a beast. I'm glad I found this video, there's so many that shouldn't be on YouTube... haha.
What absoluately fabulously gorgeous piano playing. This was the very first introduction I had to Kissin in a live concert, and one could tell after 10 notes that he was a talent of the century. Listen to the voicing of the melody and the absolute eveness and stability of the triplets. No banging where Liszt can get obscene in the hands of most.
No triplets

In short: good sounds, not so good music.
