Hello there! I didn't realize there were different versions either. What does yours sound like? Are you able to post it? I wonder if the different versions were for different recording companies. i know that they recorded for Columbia and also for Bluebird Record Company. I would like to hear it if you have any way to post it. Thanks and have a great night, Brian
I don't have it anymore. I lost it in a house fire several years ago. There were several more verses and the mandolin wasn't on it. Tanner did a verse of a nice "chop" style fiddle. I believe it was on Columbia but I'm not sure.
I am sorry to hear about your house. That must have been terrible. The verse that you have here sounds a lot like what soldiers would have faced in the Civil War. Was your recording digital or was it on a 78 rpm record? If I can find the version that you're talking about, I will definitely put it up. Have a great evening, Brian
Thanks for the kind thoughts. We just have to play the hand we're dealt.
Actually, I'd had the old 78 when I was much younger and then I found a digital copy somewhere on the internet. It had the needle scratches intact so somebody had just held the mic close to the horn to record it.
I'm glad! I have 4 albums worth of their music to post! I love their rendition of this song. Thanks for commenting/watching and have an awesome night, Brian

This was my grandmothers favorite. I learned it at her house in 1950 when I was 9yo. I inherited the record (78) and her wind-up phono. Leonard

I do love listening to the Skillet Lickers. I had a different version of them doing this song. I didn't realize that they did more than one.

One verse was:
"Twenty five cents for the morphine,
fifteen cents for the beer.
Twenty five cents for the morphine
gonna take me away from here."
