Fabulous. Still breathtaking all these years later. Dudnik and Yang Bo were the best beam workers of their time. Maybe of all time. There's nothing convoluted about what they did on beam. Just difficult, creative combinations that no one else was capable of, and dancing with grace and fluidity. One could only hope to do this kind of gymnastics. Love it.
so she thought it was a layout but i still think it's too tucked to be a layout. as for the piked full in, either the tuck comes right before the landing or i'm gonna call it a tuck as well
Her ariel into 2 layout stepouts combination is one of my favorites of all time. I haven't seen anyone do it since. And I've never seen anyone with a better triple twist dismount. Not only does she definitively get it all the way around, but she nails the landing.
Its funny how the world of gymnastics claims that the current "New" system in which gymnasts are judge with considers the beam sets that women do today are somehow more difficult then what this young lady did if you ask me whenever I watch older meets (Miller Dawes Era) their sets included sometimes 2 punch fronts 3 layout step outs from a back flip flop and huge E level risk mounts girls today mount the mean with a "Leap" or "Tuck Jump" what are the people behind today's system thinking?!
ummmm was this really the first time a hand spring full twisting back somi was performed in a major championships???? cos thats what Monica Rutherford says here........didnt shishova or whatever her name was do it @ the 83 worlds????
@mistybabe5489 - thx for replying, ahhhh right, well she could have performed it straighter I think, theres a clear pike in her body line......im sure you see it too, nothing like the full twisting str8 for example shown by Kui Kuan in 96/97
@garyj79 well actually i just remembered that a shishiova is a back full tucked or piked, they have the same value (kind of like how on floor a full in tucked or piked is the same skill, but you can do it twice) yeah she does pike down at the end but it's clear she was trying to do a layout, i agree that kui yuanyuan has the best form. if you want to see the difference between the two, amy chow once did a piked shishova on beam.
This routine is just a jaw-dropper. A total WOW! Thanks loads for posting it!
The only mistakes (after watching this at least twice) are the teeny tiniest of balance checks after the full turn, and tuck jump. I suppose the some of the splits don't quite hit 180 but I think it's intentional on some of the leaps.
I'm pretty certain this isn't correct. I think the new rules don't give credit for repeating an element, so she wouldn't get credit for both layout stepouts, nor for all 3 split leaps. Her full pirhouette also was not difficult enough, doesn't it have to be a C level now? She would have to have her leg horizontal or some other change. I don't know if the tuck jump would get anything either or fulfill the connection.
[which they didnt win but they nearly swept the EF]
And then won bronze in 2004.
Had a gymnast in 2nd in AA and 4th missing bronze by .25 and then had another bronze and silver medal in vault and had a gymnast miss bronze on beam by nearly a tenth.
fuck romania. all the medals romania won were non-deserving! oh come on, what other team won gold for the easiest routines? why, it's romania of course! romania is the most over rated team ever!
Your comment isn't even accurate. Romania never won a team, EF, or AA gold with "The easiest" routine, not the hardest, but not the easiest. True they don't tend to take massive risk, but their routines were always out of a 10.0, unless it was bars, or something. Their win in 2000 was a pure gift from RUS. And their win in 2004 was legit. A lot of the Romanian stars(Comaneci, Silivas/Dobre, Milosovic, Amanar, Raducaan, Ponor, and Izbasa) are actually well remembered for their difficulty.
Those 13 countries certainly have a right to feel animosity towards Russia. I think historically most of the gymnastics talent came from countries like Ukraine, and Belarus.
I agree that this is incredible, but her leaps are very low and lack extension, which is a shame as the rest of it is so unbelievable. Thats why she didnt get a 10, also there were a couple of very slight, almost imperceptible wobbles. Bo Yang of China was more precise and perfect, but I rate this right up there also:)
It's really unfair to compare anyone to Yang Bo, arguably the best beam worker of all time. Olessia does make my top5 list, though, because she was 2 Code of Points ahead of her time in terms of difficulty and had an impeccable execution. Her routine would be competitive even now!
There's no way Dudnik couldn't nail split leaps. I'm tempted to believe it is a stylistic choice rather than an error or inability to extend, though I couldn't know for sure. If this was the case, I guess it wouldn't be a deduction unless there was a 180-degree split requirement like there is today.
@BCONTRAT Your comment is excellent. This most definitely was a stylist choice. Dudnik has incredible flexibility which is evident in many of her skills - especially bars. I think her leaps look very beautiful here - also, if it wasn't supposed to look that way, the coaches would have corrected it. She is one of the greatest gymnasts and her skills easily rival anything today - and that is something amazing considering this was over 20 years ago - simply amazing!
I still can't believe she did it 22 years before. omg

it's amazing how she could nail the tuck full every time. it such a difficult skill even gymnasts nowadays struggle with it all the time

@sqekcx
it was not tuck but layout, even more difficult.

@MrJST94
a layout with knees bent is a tuck
sqekcx 3 months ago
@sqekcx
Shawn johnson does a tuck full. this is a layout full with little bent knees.
a full-in pike with a little bit bent knees is also not a full-in tuck.

AMAZING ROUTINE! I wish she didn't get injuried and retire because she would have been a big threat in 1992!

How did that not get a ten? It was the best beam routine in history.

Difficulty in this routine is just sick. In the 88-92 COP, this was probably valued at 11.5.

Not Russia, Dudnik is from Ukraine and she was competing for USSR.
rickou2 3 years ago 2
The Soviet Union, was the best.
But stealing the talent from 13 countries to compete together wasn't fair.
Russia hasn't done much in the world of Artistic Gymnastics since the Soviet Union disbanded.
BlackSatechi 3 years ago 3
Well,
they came 2nd in the 96 olympics,
were the 80% sure chance to win in 2000
[which they didnt win but they nearly swept the EF]
And then won bronze in 2004.
Had a gymnast in 2nd in AA and 4th missing bronze by .25 and then had another bronze and silver medal in vault and had a gymnast miss bronze on beam by nearly a tenth.
And thats just Olympic Games.
