Back in the south, he gets dissed for doing exactly that by some people. It kind of makes sense because in the south, at least in TN, lyrics take the backseat. A song decorated with heavy orchestration is preferred. Still, Rahman succeeded with songs like "rasathi en manasu" in the Maniratnam movie "Thiruda Thiruda" (I believe it is "chor chor" in Hindi)

What Javed said about the "dimi dimi" song is so true. Only a musician very confident of his craft can give minimum orchestration for a song because it needs only that. Brave Rahman.
