He gave the man eight seconds to put the knife down before a decision was made to end that mans life. I've seen people with guns get HOURS before police "react". I'm often in defense of officers and since I can't see the actual shooting, I can't judge if the call to shoot was valid, but it doesn't sound like the man with the knife was not in the process or had the intention to hurt anyone in that immediate situation.

What are they teaching these cops in training? I'm a son of a retired cop. He can count on one hand the number of times he had to pull his gun and wouldn't need a hand to count the number of times he actually had to discharge it because he never did in 25 years of service. Cops used to take pride in the fact they could handle a situation without having to pull their gun or use it. Now it seems like cops take pride in the number of justified shootings.

I'm not saying that Williams should have been shot. It's tragic, but the problem isn't entirely on Ian Birk. He feared for his life, and ALL POLICE TRAINING trains officers to shoot to kill if they fear that lives are endangered. Not shooting could have resulted in a dead police officer, and shooting "to disable" such as to the leg, isn't realistic under these circumstances, with all the adrenaline pumping through your system. Even body shots are difficult, and this is why there were 5 shots.

I don't think most of you realize who John T. Williams was... he was walking down the streets of Seattle, drunk and with a knife in his hand. Ian Birk ordered him to drop the knife numerous times. Williams stopped, and began to turn around with his knife hand coming up. If he had decided to lunge at Birk, the officer probably would have been killed, even if he had fired his weapon... a gun won't stop all that momentum in that fraction of a second.

A person with a knife can cover almost 30' and inflict fatal wounds before the fastest of officers can draw their weapon and fire. I have lived in Seattle all my life and in the year before this happened, 1 SPD officer and 4 in Lakewood were killed by crazed lunatics. The police in the area were quite jittery. While I don't think the shooting was justified, I don't believe Ian Birk is a bad person either. I believe that both sides (Mr. Williams and Officer Birk) made mistakes in their situations and it could have been prevented.

He gave the man eight seconds to put the knife down before a decision was made to end that mans life. I've seen people with guns get HOURS before police "react". I'm often in defense of officers and since I can't see the actual shooting, I can't judge if the call to shoot was valid, but it doesn't sound like the man with the knife was not in the process or had the intention to hurt anyone in that immediate situation.

What are they teaching these cops in training? I'm a son of a retired cop. He can count on one hand the number of times he had to pull his gun and wouldn't need a hand to count the number of times he actually had to discharge it because he never did in 25 years of service. Cops used to take pride in the fact they could handle a situation without having to pull their gun or use it. Now it seems like cops take pride in the number of justified shootings.

I'm not saying that Williams should have been shot. It's tragic, but the problem isn't entirely on Ian Birk. He feared for his life, and ALL POLICE TRAINING trains officers to shoot to kill if they fear that lives are endangered. Not shooting could have resulted in a dead police officer, and shooting "to disable" such as to the leg, isn't realistic under these circumstances, with all the adrenaline pumping through your system. Even body shots are difficult, and this is why there were 5 shots.

I don't think most of you realize who John T. Williams was... he was walking down the streets of Seattle, drunk and with a knife in his hand. Ian Birk ordered him to drop the knife numerous times. Williams stopped, and began to turn around with his knife hand coming up. If he had decided to lunge at Birk, the officer probably would have been killed, even if he had fired his weapon... a gun won't stop all that momentum in that fraction of a second.

JOHN DID NOT EVEN GET A CHANCE TO RESPOND. AND KEEP IN MIND, IF HE REALLY WAS A THREAT THE OFFICER WOULD NOT OF APPROACHED HIM SO QUICKLY.

@schlubber215 It honestly hurts me to hear that. I absolutely hate that some officers didn't get proper training and some are just bad apples that do not deserve to wear the badge because in some cases you're totally right, there are some officers that became officers just for the authority and to abuse it. I could pick them out very easily in the academy.I prayed that they wouldn't be hired. Unfortunately some slip thru the cracks and I apologize. Kno that there are us that want 2 help and care

@akirafactor while there certainly are bad cops in Seattle, not all cops are automatically bad. I have lived in Seattle all my life and in the year before this happened, 1 SPD officer and 4 in Lakewood were killed by crazed lunatics. The police in the area were quite jittery. While I don't think the shooting was justified, I don't believe Ian Birk is a bad person either. I believe that both sides (Mr. Williams and Officer Birk) made mistakes in their situations and it could have been prevented.

All anyone has to do to confirm what I'm saying is to investigate the false Seattle Police story which says that they arrested 3 of the 25 or so violent rioters. If you do so, you will discover that those 3 men don't exist. The Seattle police would do anything to get the heat off, including committing organized vandalism and violence.
Now the Seattle Police chief must be investigated and charged as well.
Anyone who touches the Birk tarbaby is getting dirty.

Anyone who was in any of the peaceful anti-Birk rallys and saw the massive police presence knows that no rioter can do anything in Seattle without police permission and support. The cops say that 25 to 30 rioters were destroying things and throwing flares at the cops while the cops stood by filing their fingernails. Rubbish! It happened just as I said it would. The police have staged a riot using their own police officers as agent provocateurs in an attempt to turn public opinion against the jail Birk movement. Having one of their own tried for murder would set a very bad precedent and the seattle police would do absolutely anything to prevent it. This type of criminal activity has been committed by cops in Phili, Denver, Boston, Toronto and other places where the police had to admit the truth after they got caught
