The Flames were defending champs in 1990. When the defending champs lose a playoff series or don't make it to the playoffs (i.e. 1995-96 New Jersey Devils or 2006-07 Carolina Hurricanes), in my opinion, that's when they lose the Cup. This also counts for the defending conference champion.
