Surstromming has a history that goes back to the Norse Vikings! When leaving on a long voyage, young warriors were given this as their main food! After weeks of eating it, they would charge ahead of the older warriors as they no longer feared death. Lol, my dad told me today how he became a non-Scandinavian viking. The challenges included skinny-dipping in the icy October sea (in Sweden) and another was to eat surstomming. Yep! Pretty rank stuff!! The smell on opening the can was not quite as bad as I expected, but the taste,. I had to spit it out as soon as it went in, I even tried washing it but that did'nt work either. It is an unedible thing and why do they try to eat a fermenting fish anyway those crazy swedes. Even my 1 year old son who eats anything didn't like it!! Then the house stank for about 2 hours afterwards of old farts.
